the issue is that the gacha game jobs are largely the ones that dont pay rear end, at least the big ones like genshin

like if youre a female character designer in china hoyo is probably one of the best games in town. esp. if you specifically want to work in games. your only other big option would be freaking tencent, lol

Ethics of gatcha gaming aside, everything about miHoYo pisses me off because the games are gorgeous and have great core gameplay loops, interesting writing, beautiful music, and unbelievable amounts of polish. They company is absolutely capable of making excellent video games. Instead they're choosing to make slot machines disguised as excellent video games.

On an entirely personal level I don't hate gacha as much as I hate Games as Service (but there's a lot of overlap). I don't actually want a forever game, I just want a fun time that ends and doesn't guilt trip you for putting it down. There are so many games where I liked everything about the game itself but stopped playing not because the qualitu went down but because it felt like putting off homework.

if the gig is good, i have no complaints. this got me wondering how they pay artists for this kind of work overseas. royalties or per produced piece or some combo of both?

the state of animation right now is genuinely heartbreaking considering what its come from, but unions are coming back babey!!! i have much higher hopes for animators in the long run than i do comics.

but in the short term........man its such a crappy field to be in lol. its way, way, way too demanding and they keep eliminating positions that were once essential. are story boarders even a thing any more or do all the studios just make the artists do it?

I played FEH for the first time while recovering in the hospital a couple months ago and some of the png's looked pretty nice, hope some people got paid decently to draw them. Oh also don't play FEH it's boring as poo poo lol.

One of my roommates in uni chose our school because it had an extremely well regarded animation/illustration program and he wanted to be a story boarder. By the time he finally managed to graduate the program had been defunded to the point it was two professors sharing a room and the idea of landing a distinct story board job instead of just generic staff animator/vfx was a pipe dream. :( He at least managed to land on his feet and from what I understand has been getting by alright doing commission work but yeah it just seems like an absolutely miserable field.

Was Engage originally supposed to have actual monetized gatcha elements in it? It has like 90% of the systems in place with the rings but they all just kind of feel weirdly vestigial, particularly since there's only 1-2 gatcha rings that are worth putting on a character over the actual hero rings you just get as part of the main quest.

:laffo:

It's a gig, they pay per character. There is usually a large stable of artists to provide a variety of waifu styles. The artists which have shown to produce designs that sell well are given preference. The really good ones then may get a contract job to design the main cast of big brand games like a Fire Emblem and so on.

e: For example, here is the Azur Lane (big titty boats) artist list:

Yeah that was the plan initially. Just like every other game with random stat points bonuses on armor. Like the Witcher or Fallout, Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad and Cyberpunk 2077.

well, not in mihoyo's case. they have actual salaried character design positions. they occasionally bring in freelancers but most of the art is done inhouse.

No, it wasn't at all. They're just random RNG drops. Plenty of games had similar systems well before gacha games became a thing.

I honestly don't know, at least not for new shows. Personally it comes down to the kind of content the youtuber covers, which sets different tolerance levels in me for what turns me off their videos. I really like Sage's Anime Abandon series for looking at older shows but he also covers a lot of the ultraviolent OVAs from the 80s and 90s and all that entails so it's not an automatic recommendation.

I wanna like Mothers Basement but the idea that he “painstakingly worked with YouTooz to get every detail right” on his figurine and it came out looking like chibi Scott Wozniak just rubs me the wrong way a teeny tiny bit

like, is that simply the best that YouTooz can do with their generic figurine base template (in which case, whatever. Get that money), or did they originally come to him with a much more true-to-life prototype that he vetoed for vanity reasons?

Jesus you made me go look at his recap of of Dungeon Meshi, and selling it on "cozy cooking comedy" is not only underselling the real charm and depth of the series' character writing and dry humor, but it's going to upset people when it hits the darker spots in the story later. Also no idea where he's going by comparing Freiren to Tolkein. I love Freiren, but it's not going for a Tolkein approach to... anything.

E-and calling it a "5e cookbook" is dumb, considering Ryoko Kui's drawing a lot of influence from the waaaaay-older-than-5e-D&D-CRPGs like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2

nah, it was mostly just that they arent korean and korea is one of their smaller markets so they have no reason to care at all. they self-publish in korea

like someone mentioned arknights but the korean server for arknights is handled by the publisher's korean branch, not the arknights devs. so its basically a korean company. basically every instance of this is either korean companies or korean branches, theres no reason for companies outside korea to give a poo poo.

There's really almost nothing that is comparable to Tolkien and I don't mean that in a bad way, his writing comes from a vastly different mindset than the "I'm going to write a fantasy story" thought process usually creates. But it does make me wonder if the people who compare something to Tolkien because it superficially resembles Middle Earth really know what the guy was about.

I get more Witcher vibes (minus the fairy tale satire and postmodern political riffing) off of Frieren than Tolkien.
