I love when a movie just lies to you in the title. Edit: also, you should at least watch Goodfellas. I'm not going to say it's his best, but it's the one everyone likes. Air Skwirl fucked around with this message at 21:45 on Jan 30, 2024 |

Yea if you want the Scorsese movies that will allow you to have the most casual movie conversations with people in social situations, it's Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed, and maybe throw Taxi Driver in there.

I couldn't gently caress with Age of Innocence cuz it was just a bunch of rich white people and their stupid lives and as much as the film was aware of that and the cast was great I could not give a gently caress.

I watched Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore a couple of weeks ago and it was wonderful. Very different from a lot of his other movies. Very weird that that movie was spun off into a long running sitcom.

About 20 minutes of My Lucky Stars is good. Unfortunately the movie is much longer than 20 minutes But those good 20 minutes do include Michiko Nishiwaki flexing

Ehh, I think most of us have certain peccadillos where we can acknowledge the artistry and craft that went in to something while also being completely turned off by it based on subject matter. The opposite, and what you suggest is preferable is everyone saying Leni Reifenstahl is the greatest director of all time, with no asterisks next to it.

Man, Barbarella just refuses to generate any kind of narrative momentum. First thing that happens: Barbarella crash lands on a planet, breaking her spaceship’s stabilizers and requiring assistance from a local to repair it. Second thing that happens: Barbarella crash lands on a different part of that planet, breaking her spaceship’s stabilizers and requiring assistance from a local to repair it.

It's called an "arch", Barbarella tries to learn not to be a lovely pilot.

I feel like quite a lot of old sci-fi stories kinda struggle with the idea of an arc besides 'a bunch of stuff just happens that the writers thought was cool, possibly while high'.

I will admit I only know Barbarella as it's referenced as a shared coma dream in Venture Bros, mashed up with Empire Strikes Back.

I think part of the point of Barbarella is that she isn't very active, she deals with situations as they come up but doesn't instigate conflicts. Which fits a movie starring Hanoi Jane.

Barbarella's on a mission of peace and love, yeah. She hasn't got time to be getting into conflicts or properly maintaining her spaceship.

Wonka was fun, though definitely one of those movies that plays things by the numbers enough there's not much to really say about it. That said, given the last couple Hollywood musicals I've seen it's impressive enough they managed not to gently caress it up completely.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Wonka. I think the trailers really undersold it by not including any snippets of the songs. If anything, it got me into listening to the discography of the guy who did the music, Neil Hannon.
