IT TURN OUT METAL FOR DINNER!

My style of sumo continues to be mediocre as all get out. Thanks heaps for running it again, Kenning! And Banana Canada for having really nice summaries every day. Congrats to Vargatron and Nativity in Black for their commanding yushos :toot:

Thanks again Kenning and Banana Canada! I'm waiting for my beginner's luck to run out soon, but I'll keep applying my brand of sumo and focus on the next match.

Hell yeah, he had such a great showing in January. You'll have to get a card with his new ring name later this year though!

Devastated that I would have gone all KK if only I had stuck with my old favorite Nishikigi rather than Atamifuji. It’s wild that with so much carnage in upper maegashira, there’s a non-zero chance that he gets bumped back up to komusubi from M-5 with a 8/7! Much to ponder before March…

Thanks to Kenning and Banana Canada for enhancing my sumo watching experience as always!

Final tracker and ranking results.

This update assumes my tracker is correct for the discrepancies I already posted about in my last update. Juryo points are now added in and I removed the sansho points that Kotonowaka failed to win. Note that I sorted and labelled the final placings of everyone to account for all seven levels of tie-breakers. This is totally unofficial as Kenning had explained that he only applies it to determine the overall Yusho. Hence, if you have the same number of points as someone else, officially you are tied with them.

Apparently Asashoryu was throwing shade at Hoshoryu for pulling out of the tournament. I'm glad Hoshoryu was convinced to drop out because what Asashoryu describes here is mental.

Wasn't Asashoryu the one that all his attendants hated serving? Or was that Harumafuji? I think 90% of Hoshoryu's problems are his mental, and having his uncle constantly poo poo on him can't be helping. What is Asa expecting? Perc Angle??

I heard Asa's comments and said to myself "What a loving prick." Good on Hoshoryu for being smart about taking care of an injury like that rather than making it even worse. He's going to be a splendid yokozuna some day, and I like to think he's smart enough not to be forced to retire for beating up a waiter.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

Asashoryu was so toxic you can find old articles in English about how the young new Mongolian yokozuna, Hakuho, will bring honour and dignity back to the ranks after how it was desecrated by Asashoryu's behaviours. And this was before he was even forced out.

Also while diging through pre-2012 stuff you can find poo poo like this

https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/asia-pacific/sumo-wrestles-with-globalization

quote:

Nevertheless, foreign-born wrestlers can thrive in Japan and have done so. Hakuho, Asashoryu’s Mongolian successor as yokozuna, is as bland and deferential as Asashoryu was controversial and cocky. Naturally, he is beloved by his Japanese fans. So, too, is Estonia’s Baruto, who has been dubbed sumo’s Leonardo DiCaprio by the local media. (OK, maybe there’s a passing resemblance between the two, but, really, not all blond, blue-eyed foreigners look alike.) At one tournament, elderly ladies with powdered faces and dowdy cardigans waved Baruto-emblazoned fans while screaming “Kawaii!” (Cute!). Quite an honor for the son of former Soviet cattle farmers.

I saw the video with Asashoryu's comments and laughed. Felt very Four Yorkshire Men. No doubt in Asashoryu's day they all drank concentrated acid and ate hot coals before having their legs amputated and they still turned up for the full 15 days.

The girls version of the Hakuho Cup for youth sumo streaming on YT from what looks to be an official channel. Not sure if it's just the live or if they'll keep the VODs accessible, but I figure it's worth leaving on in the background when I don't have anything better to watch to give some view time to help support it.

There have been some great matches all over the weight classes and age brackets, with plenty of good techniques too.
