Stupid as hell but I had a much better time than GvK as this kept the incredibly cringe humor and dumb human poo poo to a minimum. My 2PM 4DX monday crowd went absolutely buck wild. It was a blast. The 4DX was so intense it was practically physically punishing and I loved every second of it. I have seen the past 3 of these in the format and it is so loving perfect for them. Basically a 2hr Godzilla/Kong 3D motion ride.

I thought Godzilla was preparing so hard specifically to deal with Shimo's ice powers and their ability to cause an ice age. It visually made enough sense to me under that assumption and then his pink breath dispelled the start of the bad weather that Shimo had put in motion. This somehow hit just the right notes for me. Definitely some stuff felt rushed, especially Mothra's resurrection as y'all mentioned, but the comedic vibe of the human story managed to not annoy me. Everything with baby monke worked way better than I expected, and Kong swinging him around to beat the other apes was absolutely my favorite moment.

The Daimajin movies are kind of repetitive but I think it's fun to see three different directors film their own take on the story all within the same year

Saw GxK at the Dolby theater and honestly it really reminded me of how fun it was to watch Godzilla vs Megalon in the theater as a kid. Stupid in all the right ways and probably the most fun of all of the past 3 Legendary Godzilla films. I hadn’t been paying super close attention to G’s new form before I saw this so I was surprised about his new thagomizer

Lands firmly on the "agreeably stupid" side. Kong becomes Conan and there's enough lost world weirdness that it reminded me not so much of the 70s Godzilla films but of other 70s B fantasy flicks like At The Earth's Core or Land That Time Forgot. Adam Wingard may not be terribly ambitious in terms of thematic material or doing anything terribly deep but he does have some interesting visual/style approaches. GvK was all about fooling around with the vertical axis and our perception of gravity even before the Hollow Earth was revealed, and here there's a lot of deliberate fish-eye lens stuff and use of shallow focus, emphasizing the weirdness of the Hollow world. Also, credit to the story for dealing with that "all the islanders died except this girl" plot in a satisfying way. My major complaint is that the Scar King isn't the most compelling villain visually.

you know, I wasn't a big monster movie watcher, but I've been on a tear ever since I decided to watch the 1970s King Kong remake (mostly because I learned that the Kongfrontation ride was based off of that movie) back in September, then decided to watch Skull Island and GvK to prep for this movie. I thought this movie was a lot of dumb fun and I think I sort of understand the appeal of pro wrestling now. Right down to ridiculous poo poo like Godzilla suplexing Kong off of a pyramid, or Kong using the tiny monkey as an improvised weapon. Absolutely ridiculous but it works for this film and I was all for it. Also, I don't know if it is the way the character is treated in this series or if it's something about her design, but both in KotM and here when Mothra shows up with all her iridescence, my eyes start watering up. I can't really explain why it happens, but they're happy tears so that's good enough for me. Speaking of that, I think my favourite part of the movie had to be the comedic miscommunication when Kong goes up to bring Godzilla down to Hollow Earth. Godzilla's powering up, Kong knows which portal to take to get close enough and shows up like "bro, I know we've had our differences, but I need your help again." and when Godzilla shows up it's like "I told you to stay down there, you stupid monkey!" "whoa whoa whoa bro, I'm not here to fight, I need help down there, stop hitt-gently caress it, maybe if I beat you senseless you'll listen to me then". Only Mothra showing up to be all "boys, boys, quit acting like children! Momma needs you both to clean up the mess in the basement. Now apologise to each other and let's get going." I dunno, that whole sequence made the movie for me

I mean, a lot of that makes perfect sense considering Godzilla and Kong are basically shonen rivals.

Okay I finally dragged my rear end to a cinema to watch this and it was ..... fine, I guess??? The fights were good value but all the human stuff felt more like episodic stuff from a TV series, but at lest it wasn't as lovely as the human stuff from the previous film A lot of the earlier fights (Kong fighting the pack of hyena-like kaiju, etc) felt like video game footage because it was mostly filmed from high overhead, which really diminished the scale of those creatures

I saw Godzilla x Kong while high as gently caress and instead of it enhancing the viewing, it put me in an incredibly sobering state of mind that heavily impacted my viewing experience. I could not stop thinking while watching the movie that I am pretty sure this film represents a new low bar in just how loving stupid an entire film with hundreds of millions of dollars behind it can be. Hear me out; I know stupid multi-million dollar movies have existed in the past. I am not some alien to whom this information is brand new. However, this film legitimately feels like it was either written by an AI or by a human being who holds active contempt for the audience. The stupidity is not celebratory or fun. It feels stupid for the exact opposite reason; this movie was assembled on a factory line. I think it was during minute 35 of the I think 100 minutes of ugly apes vaguely gesturing at each other I realised this. This is a movie written by someone so lazy and stupid they decided what they needed to do to grip audiences was give King Kong a loving character arc. Almost every single line of dialogue in this movie is a character delivering exposition, 50% of the time explaining something we just saw. It's a movie where Mothra is the good monster so she glows and makes cute noises, in case you loving morons in the audience needed a hint. If someone had a job working on this movie, they did it as quickly as possible and with as little effort as possible. It generally hits the bare minimum beats for what even constitutes a movie. It's like if a studio's homework was to make a Kong/Godzilla movie and they only remembered the hand-in date was tomorrow the night before. I know these are a lot of words but I genuinely was having a somewhat existensial experience on the state of film watching this movie.

You definitely don't need to have been high for this to bother you. I'm baffled by folks upthread saying that the human element in this was... anything but painful and unnecessary. We've seen Kong get hurt, he lurches into view groaning in pain, and a human character shouts, "I think he's hurt!" and then, ten seconds later, "Man, he's not doing so good."

On the other hand the movie really was dumb as poo poo and the script was hung on several hooks where the explanation was pretty much "a wizard did it" Skar King uses a special crystal to control Shimo which was the only reason the entire plot was even possible. What's the deal with that specific crystal? A wizard did it, don't worry about it The Iwi people had a prophecy that Jia would return right at that specific moment and summon Mothra (who's entire role is to translate Kong Language to Godzilla Language for one scene, and help out slightly during a fight). Who made the prophecy? A wizard. How did she reincarnate Mothra without gestating an egg and a pupae? Uh, a wizard did it The Iwi people live behind special barriers created by Mothra, which is how they escaped detection from Skar King's forces for thousands upon thousands of years. Why does Mothra have this fancy new power? Uh, a wizard did it Etc etc. Of course the actual real world explanation is that Wingard thought up a bunch of cool scenes he wanted to film and he hired that loving hack Terry Rossio to connect everything together with his signature bullshit. Related, usual Rossio's writing partner Ted Elliott pretty much disappeared without explanation a decade ago and no one online seems to have any idea why. His last new writing credit was The Lone Ranger and I guess if I wrote that stinker I'd just walk away as well.

I definitely thought that the veil/shield/barrier was actually going to be Mothra's cocoon and definitely as to why they didn't just HAVE that when the Iwi chief escorts them further into the temple. Like, where did Mothra come from when Jia "summoned" her? She's not a magical summon that will disappear once the combat encounter is over, she's a physical being and her body wasn't destroyed in KotM sooooooo. I think that was the only thing that pulled me out of the movie, and what's even sadder is that that's an easy fix. Skar King using some crystal as a control device on Shimo? That doesn't stretch my suspension of disbelief that far in a film where we just found out that the Iwi are basically Atlanteans. At that point you just accept it and move on or you don't and you were probably already against the film before Kong had his first encounter with the giant apes
