I did a lot of solar water pumping system design and many were for charities that wanted to install pumping systems in Africa. We always stressed that the systems/pumps would need checking/maintenance. 9 out of 10 times the charities would move on to the next place without any follow up. It was infuriating. One of the success stories was a guy in some village called us directly and I walked him through repairs and maintenance, sold him some spare parts, and got his village pump up and running again over the course of a week. We developed a policy that we needed at least one person in the village that knew how to contact us directly when things broke down.
