It's been discussed before but one of Cage's big influences is German Expressionism. So when you see him doing those big exaggerated facial expressions that's basically him trying to do his version of Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or The Man Who Laughs.

Nicolas Cage is tied with Koji Yakusho as the best single-scene performance of all human history for me (Yakusho's being the final shot of Perfect Days)

The breakdown scene in the casino in Leaving Las Vegas is the most heartbreaking thing ive ever seen esp after watching a good chunk of my family drink themselves to death. ive never seen the absolute unfettered despair of late-stage alcoholism so accurately depicted (he was also actually drunk during the filming iirc).

Raising Arizona is also one of the best comedy movies ever made, and it includes one of the best chase scenes ever made, and Nic Cage's performance in it is a huge part of what makes both work.

what makes him compelling for me is not the look, or the character himself, but because of how well Thorton plays him. I didn't get on the art train until 2 because I felt 1 had a great concept for a villian but the film was a bit too meh for me overall. Neat effects but lacked a personality. 2 really brought it.

Leone made Art a far funnier villain which is what made it all click.

I do see Art as more of a vehicle for the gore effects showcase rather than an actual character. I say that as a big fan of the Friday the 13th series and I basically feel the same way about Jason, so that's not necessarily a dig against Art. The guy playing Art is doing a good job but he's more of a Kane Hodder than a Robert Englund, for obvious reasons.

I suppose it's not a very fair comparison anyway, Englund didn't really come into his own as Freddy until Dream Warriors. So who knows where Art is headed in Terrifier 3 and beyond.

im curious as your experience regarding underage kids in theaters nowadays. When I was like 15-17 (so 2015-2019) i was never ID'd except for one time as far as I can remember, and back then I was a frequent theater goer like I am now at a bunch of different theaters.

I was always under the impression since its not a law and just theater policy, it was kind of a "rule we can use to enforce if kids are acting up in a theater to kick them out" thing.

Do you actually ID everyone for R rated movies, or is it just up to your discretion? (and if so, what makes you to decide to ID or not?)

Would love to hear your thoughts/experiences on it i always appreciate your insights into the theater industry!!

If it was a case of the underage kids coming in and behaving during the show, that'd be one thing, not really an issue. It does boil down to behavior. It's definitely gotten worse after quarantine since so many people in general have forgotten how to behave in public. If someone looks young, or is acting the idiot before even buying a ticket, that ramps up getting carded. Buy tickets online and that ramps up getting carded too because they think it's a viable way to sneak past. I have carded people who just looked really young but were of age. From what I've seen with my years at the theater, it's generally acting rowdy, being loud, vaping, being intoxicated...etc.. which definitely ramps up when there's more in the group and the unspoken internal take is we'd rather refuse a sale for a couple kids without ID than have to deal with the refunds/free tickets we'd have to give out for the rest of the auditorium who's showing was disrupted.

That said, there have been underage who've likely gotten past box office and podium. But they carried themselves in a mature manner/looked old enough that didn't raise the red flags. If we knew they'd behave in the showings, we wouldn't mind and just be cracking down on the people bringing in small children in the late showings of R rated films since more often than not if the child starts crying or acting out, the parents are more likely than not just not do anything or leave. There are theaters who don't particularly give two craps about carding, but those do end up getting the reputation of expect disruptions and at how much everything costs, people shouldn't have to deal with teens acting like asshats.

The majority of those I card, do have an ID of some sort I can work with whether it's State ID, Driver's License, Passports, Tribal ID, and even if it's expired, the birthdate doesn't change. Any combination of their picture, name and birthdate I can work with. I've even accepted pictures on their phone of the ID and in once case did a facetime. The ones most likely to not have ID are young women who almost always cop an attitude on being carded.

I know your reasoning for your stance, and there's not enough words to convey how much I do sympathize with you. I couldn't even begin to estimate how many R rated films I snuck into as a teen. I hate sounding like a 'get off my lawn' type, but some of the behavior I've seen from the kids just floors me. Common sense says you want to lay low and not draw attention to yourself if you're in the R rated showing, but that common sense is exceedingly rare.

Whenever I snuck into an r rated movie it was because I wanted to see it. So I sat back and kept low.

Best sneak job I ever did was I went into 28 weeks later, sat near a group of college age kids. Soon after a group of kids my age showed up and sat upfront

They were talkative and loud before the movie starts and the theater attendant shows up and kicks them out. Didn’t even come near me probably due to where I was sitting, like I was in part of college group lol

And I saw the movie no problemo

Not super exiting but hey.

There's definitely an element of not thinking at play. I've had kids talk loud enough for me to hear them tell someone how they're just going to sneak in. There's also when they don't have the ID for the rated R stuff and they pick a film they can see, choosing seats in row A. We've all been through this enough to know somewhere during preshow trailers they're going to try to duck into the film they were told no on. There's also doing the sneak in on a busy night rather than a slow day. So many pick the slow day when you've just made everyone's day by giving us all enough to do and providing entertainment for anyone in the breakroom listening in on the security walkie.
