Jedit posted:If the Tories are planning a 100-day policy blitz after the locals, then they're probably calling a GE immediately after. That would put it at around September 19th. They might do it a couple of weeks earlier though, to catch out students in transit. Saw something from Kuenssberg last weekend saying that Sunak might call it in the wake of the local elections to stave off a potential challenge to his leadership if (when) the results are disastrous.

When that didn’t happen, they had to give some explanation. So the explanation was that we had betrayed our principles, we were no longer Socialists, we were reactionaries and had departed from our original ideas. In effect, we were now traitors, because we didn’t do the horrible things they promised we would. They had built up a straw man and now they were knocking it down. Also secret Hitlers, all Hitlers all day Tommy Douglas, 1958 posted:It was a fairly rough campaign because the Liberals had by this time begun to smell defeat in the air. Their attacks became almost frenzied. We had now ceased to become Communists, which we had been called in previous elections, because the Communists had become respectable.… We, who for years had opposed Hitler when other people were saying he wasn’t a bad fellow, were now classified as National Socialists. They made wild assertions that we were going to take farms, confiscate businesses, and drive all the industries out of the province. The attacks became more hysterical with every passing day.

WTF is this Tory strategy of stepping up attacks on the sick and disabled? I know they've always just wanted people to die but why this sudden rush, do they think this will play well?

Rather than "hmm, we're losing popularity, what we're doing isn't working" it's "hmm, we're losing popularity, we're not doing enough of it".

There’s probably some electoral calculus along the lines of “sick and disabled people are less likely to have photo id to vote with (either due to lack of money or lack of necessity in their day to day life) so gently caress them they won’t vote for us but they can’t vote against us either” in the mix.

I'm not even sure that the Tories want disabled people to die. It's just more convenient if you don't need to look after them. It's still evil, obviously, but it's more banal than frothing psychopathy.

I'm absolutely loving bricking it today at the idea of PIP payments being stopped. My whole family relies on it. Three of the four of us get PIP and I have a Motability vehicle because of them. Without it we're super hosed. Could really use some reassurance today but nobody has any proper details. Is this just something he's proposing as a campaign promise or is it like, something he's trying to force through next month? What the hell is happening? Someone please talk me down. It's hard not to feel like my whole life is about to be utterly destroyed.

Obviously people who are genuinely disabled are able to access support, therefore people complaining about finding it difficult must be shirkers getting caught. More complaints means we’re catching more shirkers!

I could be wrong but I think the proposed changes would require legislation, so 3 debates in the Commons and back and forth to the Lords. Probably not enough time to actually implement.

Mourning Due posted:Since the rise of the internet it feels like there are no more cultural "waves", like grunge or early 90s hip-hop or anything. Everyone has their own catered version of the media, but they aren't experiencing it alongside many others, at least in their own local circle. We've never been more connected, but we've never felt so alone. But now everyone's watching something different on a different streaming service and it's impossible to give or recieve recommendations without it also coming alongside 'you should spend another £10 a month to sign up for squuem' which nobody is going to do. My wife and I watched all of Ted Lasso a few weeks back after she was dogsitting for her sister and she saw an episode. She really liked it and I'd heard good things about it as well, but it's on Apple+ and they cracked down on password sharing, so we had to get a trial and rush all 3 seasons So telling my parents that they should watch it (and I genuinely think they should) means if they want to keep up with whatever all of their kids & grandkids are watching they need to subscribe to amazon, apple+, netflix, now tv, peacock (or cockmount or whatever The Star Trek One is calling itself), crunchyroll (older brother is a weeb), dropout.tv (who to be fair have some amazing stuff) and probably also nebula. That's about £60 a month. Yes they're retired boomers but even they have limits. Side rant - renting Barbie on streaming services is £15. Buying the DVD off amazon is £5. I shouldn't be surprised it's more expensive to rent than buy, but here we are.

keep punching joe posted:Has everyone just forgotten that internet piracy exists and is easier than navigating a million different streaming options? For a brief period internet piracy wasn't easier than dealing with official subscriptions. Started with Steam offering a simple platform for buying and playing games, but then you got Origin and Epic and a billion other services. Then Netflix and Spotify appeared and gave people a simple place to watch stuff/listen to music for a small subscription. That was great! My mum could do that instead of having to figure out what the best torrent site is then avoiding all the viruses and fake stuff that comes with internet piracy. Now there's Apple Music and Amazon and Google... play?, or Apple TV+ and Disney and Amazon, everything is an exclusive so it's loving impossible to just pay one amount to watch all the stuff you want to watch and not all the other crap those services put out to fill the page.

I pay actual money for Netflix, Disney and Amazon and never use them to watch anything because I've got two pretty reliable websites that have everything I want on them. One just works really well with no popups but doesn't get a few obscure things, the other has a few annoying popups but seems to have anything I can think of.
