got a little nauseated at the hot dog with a twinkie bun and cheez whiz on it, lol. this feels like an early simpsons episode so far in terms of the volume of casual visual gags, star power, etc. this is going to sound like an insult, but all the spielberg parodies feel like the sort of jokes i made when i was a kid. it just feels like the sort of comedy that's for movie and comedy nerds, and, hell, i'm one of them.

e: lmao at David Proval being one of the villains

The plot in this is really just an excuse to move from bit to bit - you can see everything happening from a mile away, and you just sit and enjoy the ride. Despite that, it feels a little triumphant when Weird Al lets people buy shares of his weirdo station and the whole town wants in on it, lol. For a movie from 1989, this does a great job of having enough hits in the "throw one joke dart a minute at the board" format. Some of the fun is in identifying actors like the High Aldwin from Willow and the rubber-faced guy from the Ernest movies. The synth soundtrack version of a lot of the orchestral scores it's parodying help the humor a lot. Some of the moments I laughed that weren't just celebrity recognitions:

-the ad for Spatula City
-Michael Richards gradually increasing his gerning as he takes on the TV host responsibilities
-Trinidad Silva shaking up the ant farm for no reason.
-The "And take that ridiculous thing off!" gag.
-Conan the Librarian
-Michael Richards using every muscle in his face for the line "Why'd I ask?"
-Richie Aprile's quietly furious reaction at Michael Richards realizing that his shirt glows in the dark.
-I had no idea this was where "Supplies!" comes from. I worked with someone who would post a gif of it whenever i discussed purchasing supplies, until he was predictably fired.

this is a movie from 1989 about a guy who's a movie and comedy nerd and just wants to celebrate that. The message, "why can't people be a little weird sometimes?" is actually kind of sweet as it's presented. Weird Al ftw.

e: whoops, i hosed up the spoiler tags, lol.

tldr; I didn't love this one, sorry, but thank you for picking it.

I think at the end of the day it feels exploitative, even if that was not the director's intention. That being said, there's a ton about it that's so well made. The way the camera is framed is often incredible. The way they hovered just over the wheat at the beginning reminded me of Zerkalo, lol. The constant use of colors, dark lighting, and the blue-green/red-yellow contrasts was cool. It particular, the dark blues paired with very pale whites did a lot of work, and it gets really striking both at the beginning and the end when they start throwing in reds, oranges, yellows, pinks, etc. for contrast. I think it's early in the movie where a sheet gets stained with blood in the shape of the Rising Sun and that's some good poo poo, lol. There was one point where the catch-lights themselves were intensely blue that made the slow-close focus on a person's face super jarring. The slow motion in the knife fighting scenegave it a kind of intensity that's usually lacking. There are some shots where the way the camera spins is dizzying enough to give a sort of motion sickness for how much the dwell on them.

That being said, the opening montage that spends 10 minutes focusing on T&A (hard to complain about :D ), the thing where people constantly have one tit out, etc. do sort of hurt things sometimes. It feels like there's someone with a checkbook that pushed for more tits. For 1972, though? Not so bad. Better than the I Spit On Your Grave oeuvre. I think my chief complaint is the sound effects, weirdly? The combat scenes having that absurd sound is at odds with the feeling for the rest of the movie, and the fight scenes should have either been more frequent. Like, a LOT more frequent. the one at the end is so good. the scene where they string her up dwells on it way too much and goes on way too long. if it had been like 1/3rd of the time and they'd filled it with more badass fighting, it would have gone a long way to redeeming it IMO

Also, can I just say: it feels really good to have a movie club again. Reminds me of living in an apartment where we did this kind of thing (my movies were the original Cape Feare, Donnie Darko, lol, and some movies I'll probably pick as my next ones), but besides Dirty Duck, every movie here has fallen into the category of "Even if I didn't really like this, I'm glad I watched it and I'm glad I witnessed what the director was trying to do."

Turning it in late, don't care, it's still in the title of the thread.

Duel to the death kicked rear end. Most people already pointed out everything I'd compliment like the camerawork, the flying and exploding ninjas, the exploding head lmao, and the final duel being absolutely baller.

it's not playing at the place down the street from us or else i would take my kindergartener son, lol. i basically take him to every movie that seems appropriate for his age range because he already understands that "going to the movies" is a special experience and enjoys it every time, even if he hates the movie (e.g. Disney's Wish). there's nothing like getting a big bag of popcorn and seeing a movie together. once fungah rolls the next movie, i'm going to try to arrange a simulwatch for anyone who's interested. get ready to laugh at me.

this might seem a little harsh but i cant help it ive seen the movie a bunch of times already and the comedy doesnt hit as hard as it first did

that said since i was a little bit more disinterested this time through i noticed a lot of stuff i hadnt before like the sound design especially, its really good throughout the movie but my ears picked up on it during the opening segment with cats meowing and dogs barking in the jungle

little touches that you might not notice your first few rodeos keep this film from getting too stale

but yeah still pretty funny, lots of segments i still like, the movie parodies are pretty good but for a weird al movie there wasnt a lot of song parodies probably more licensing hoops but at least they included beverly hillbillies

as far as things go id give it a 7/10, not an extremely funny movie but at least a thoroughly entertaining one, michael richards performance carries some pretty stiff acting from the rest of the crew and you can see the blueprints for kramer which is neat

Weird Al was the first music artist i ever got into by name thanks to browsing Youtube in early middle school and i've liked him a lot ever since, but never watched UHF before. overall i'd say it was pretty good, not too many laugh out loud moments but a lot of good gags that made me smile. especially loved the movie parodies, both overt and subtle (the Network ref caught me completely off-guard until the very end lmao). plot is exactly what you'd expect for a movie like this and no performances aside from Michael Richards felt extraordinarily stand-out, but i don't think any were particularly stinkers. i read reviews that said Al was mediocre but i thought he was serviceable enough as an actor even if he was mostly playing the straightman here. definitely a movie i'd put on for friends after a few drinks to just goof off during. as a final addition, that Dire Straits parody is GOAT'd

7/10

I think he has difficulty not breaking in a lot of the parodies, like you can see him start to break into a smirk, but it's charming and sort of fits anyway. It's the character's imagination so the smirks are just kind of his enjoyment breaking through, and as far as the audience experience, it's just Weird Al kind of letting you know he's laughing along with you and not to take the movie for more than what it is.

Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion

reasonably sick. first off, meiko kaji ftw, the movie wouldnt have been unwatchable without her but she has th perfect face for the wild close-up expression shots, all sharp angles nd wide staring eyes that carry the moment (usually insane torture pain). i fuckin loved the camera in this, its all wild angles and crazy compositions that illustrate how insane the whole situation is, all the chaotic cuts when the guards are torturing her nd the wild spinning when the prisoners are filling in the hole she's diggin. that and the colors reminded me a lot of tokyo drifter, everything ends up being so stylized in a wild way. my favorite was th lady chasing her with the glass dagger thgt basically turned into a yokai until she stabbed the warden and snapped back. someone mentioned this ws an inspiration for kill bill along with lady snowblood nd i can definitely see it, especially the end of the movie

part i didnt like so much, man there was a lot of sexual violence! nami gets raped, nami gets beaten by billy clubs and then raped by them, nami gets put in like 500 bondage porn ties, the guards get raped, women get peeped on by guards constantly, etc. not usually squeamish but man that all got me. movie was definitely made by interesting, intelligent perverts but theyre definitely perverts. also lol t the scene that was basically just straight up porno. didnt like sour me on the movie but it did make some of it real hard to watch lol

solid pick overall

I took a run at Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion the other night, but bailed out about halfway through. I really dig the film-making (the cinematographer went absolutely ham on this) and Meiko Kaji's performance (I loved her in Lady Snowblood, so it's rad to see some of her other work), but I just couldn't hang with all the rape and torture. If I'm feeling more misanthropic before the deadline I'll take another shot at it - I absolutely want to see more of the art direction. I'll provide a proper review if/when I finish it up. Regardless, definitely a cool pick even if I didn't really enjoy it.

Bicyclops
Aug 27, 2004

it's hard to argue that they weren't perverts because there are definitely moments that are just literally T&A shows, but it feels too well made for them to be into the disturbing stuff somehow. like it's so deeply unpleasant in a specifically intentional way to make it feel viscerally awful, often. But then you're like... why, though? there was just way too much of it.

i think a lot of it is how note perfect the comedy is. SPATULA CITY! got me because the voice, film quality etc. are exactly like the kind of commercial you'd see on the local affiliate stations back in the 80s, before they got even more unhinged in the 90s. in boston we had all these furniture stores advertised by people with intense boston accents that, for reasons nobody understands still, got progressively hornier as the years went along. I picked this and I watched it about a week ago but I haven't gotten around to writing my thoughts about it. Obviously I love the movie, but watching now my 3 or 4th time you kinda start to see the bones of a much better movie kinda buried in it. I know Weird Al said his one regret with this movie is that he didn't take as much risks with the overarcing storyline as he should have. A good example of this is that Weird Al plays the straightman for a lot of the film, but he also has his best friend who tags along who plays an even straighter man; the friend just kinda vanishes from the movie in the 2nd or 3rd act. He exists both because the formula kinda dictates it, but also to make the already kinda stilted exposition seem a little less stilted.

Michael Richards character is extremely bizarre, but he sells it so loving hard it ends up working. Kevin McCarthy likewise puts in such amazing work that it seems like he's a parody of a parody of a screwball villain, really incredible.

I think it's also remarkable that something that was so reliant on pop culture references and gags at the time still managed to be so timeless, it's hard to tell if they got lucky with what they chose to parody or whether they really had that insight for making a joke that could last through the decades.
