Based on the popular videogame, this version is an adaptation of the same story but changed slightly to fit the format more closely. Teaser https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PPQ5Cyntyo Teaser + interviews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4_xDVQm8MY A small but cool detail, the teaser mostly mirrors the game's trailer when it was originally announced! https://twitter.com/aitaikimochi/status/1573578609414938624 The anime features the same composer and same Japanese VA's as the videogame. Release sometime in January! I'm really excited about this, cannot wait to see the game come to life as an anime. Hopefully, this also means a new game announcement soon. rkd_ fucked around with this message at 19:32 on Nov 29, 2022 |

A lot of Yoko Taro's tropes and conventions rely on the video game format so it'll be interesting to see how this works.

Assuming it's just an adaptation of Routes A/B, I'd say the video game is the better way to experience Nier Automata, but as long as the animation is competent, it should still be a fun story as a way to get people into the series.

Yeah indeed, a lot of it does not really work if you are not the one driving the actions that lead to the emotional shock so it will be interesting to see how they manage to convey that same message. I am also guessing that perhaps the big reveal will be much sooner so we are more shocked at what the characters go through rather than what we've done.

Wonder if they'll try and keep the same cast in English as well. I know Japan likes to keep the same actors for the same roles but that doesn't always work out in English dubbing, depending on the company and Union contracts.

Depends on who grabs it, Netflix has been oddly accommodating in that regard, for instance, and other companies *can* make their shows union dubs with primarily non-union talent to keep Nines and Popola/Devola’s actors so really it depends on if Crunchyroll grabs the dubbing rights.

Considering that the prologue for the story was in the form of live theatre I wouldn't be too worried about a change in medium.

Which is a tad frustrating to me because a good amount of the story is contained in different mediums and in a language I don't understand. But yeah, Yoko Taro has proven to make his storytelling work in different mediums for sure.

Every episode should end on a different lettered ending from the game where they horribly die somehow, ala Aeon Flux anime.

I've seen on some news aggregation sites that Taro has said that they're making some adjustments to accomodate the story in an anime format rather than a video game, but if they don't have the random endings then they eat a poopHappy Landfill posted:I'm almost imagining Crunchyroll snapping this license up as a middle finger to McCarley Also I think they have indeed done this and there's nothing about the old VA's reprising the role.

Yeah, true, and thank A2 for that, because the Japanese voice cast are all exceptional. It's no personal loss to me to not have the original EN cast back if they're not, I'd never choose to experience this story with them but it's a huge loss if they aren't, given how loved the EN performance is.

Yeah, the TWEWY anime was super abridged and assuming this is a direct adaption of the game I’m sort of worried now that this show is going to follow the same fate (I also wouldn’t be surprised if they only wind up adapting the first ending route)

It's nailed on to be just route A I reckon, and if it somehow does gangbusters, they might do the rest. Big actual spoilers for the game, though trying to be as vague as possible: What happens in the intro of C is really hard to reconcile with trying to sell an anime on the back of a beloved highly popular character like 2B.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about the overall ending, the format allows a different kind of creativity than the game allows, it can't be 1:1, but it will allow them to think outside the box.

New trailer with opening and ending theme song snippets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlP8Bl_YCdw On the crunchyroll page it says: quote:The series will premiere on January 7 with Crunchyroll set to stream the anime soon after. I wonder how long after January 7 'soon after' means. EDIT: From The Verge: quote:Correction December 15th, 2:07PM ET: Crunchyroll originally told The Verge that the show would begin streaming on January 7th, but after we published this story, said the show will instead premiere sometime in the month of January. Kinda weird.
