What is Fate/Grand Order?

Fate/Grand Order (FGO) is an ongoing entry in the Fate/ series. Released in Japan in 2015 and then globally in 2017 for Android and IOS, it is an RPG with heavy visual novel components. You take on the role of a new worker at Chaldea, a magical Antarctic research base focused on preserving humanity. The game is divided into three acts, the third of which (Act 2, of course) is ongoing.

Official Act 1 story blurb

Official Act 1.5: Epic of Remnant story blurb

Official Act 2: Cosmos in the Lostbelt story blurb

Fate/ is a huge series! Do I need to read the visual novels/watch the anime/read the books/play the new game coming out next year to understand what's going on?

Nope! You can jump into the series with Fate/Grand Order. You may miss out on why some characters are so popular, but beyond that everything you need to understand is explained within the game itself. And when it's not, well, that's just Fate/.

:siren:Spoiler policy:siren:

The story is one of the main draws of FGO. Because it's ongoing, please spoiler tag new content appropriately! Per the last thread, please spoiler tag new story content for at least two weeks after its release. Additionally, because this thread is for discussing both the Japanese and Global versions of the game and Global is two years behind, please spoiler tag story content that hasn't been released globally yet and make it clear that it's spoilers from the Japanese version of the game.

I tried playing the game but the writing kind of sucks. Why are you taking the story so seriously?

While everyone has different subjective takes on which chapters are the best, it's almost universally agreed that the story doesn't hit its stride until Act 1's Camelot chapter (and for the most part only improves from there). If you're struggling to get into the story, try holding out until then.

An official gameplay guide can be found here. I will also briefly summarize some of the core gameplay elements here.

Launching the game takes you to a main menu that looks like this. From here you can enter story sections, combats, summon characters and equipment from the gacha, and enhance your characters and equipment.

What are Servants?

The characters you pull for and use in the game are called Servants. Servants are divided into five rarities (1*, 2*, 3*, 4*, and 5*) and fifteen classes. The main classes are Saber, Archer, Lancer, Caster, Rider, Assassin, and Berserker; the rest are extra classes and show up less frequently.

Classes affect how effective Servants are in combat. While technically different classes have different attack modifiers, that isn't as important as the combat triangles:

It's basically rock paper scissors. For example, Saber beats Lancer, Lancer beats Archer, and Archer beats Saber. The missing class from this graphic only exists in the Japanese version of the game right now.

Servants can be leveled up and enhanced in various ways to be more effective in combat. While rarity will give you an initial level cap, that can be broken using special items called holy grails.

Here you can see Rider Da Vinci's level, attack, health, enhancements from special items called Fous, cost, and bond level. More on what those are later.

Every Servant has three skills they can use during combat

some number of passive skills that are always active

and bonus append skills you can unlock using Servant coins, which you get from either pulling extra copies in the gacha or leveling their bond.

In addition to giving you coins, extra copies also let you enhance a Servant's Noble Phantasm (NP), which is a special attack or buff you can charge up and use during combat.

Collecting and enhancing Servants

1* and 2* Servants can only be acquired from the friend point gacha, which uses a currency you get from playing the game and borrowing peoples' characters. You can use it once per day for free, and it can also give you 3* Servants and a few other special Servants. You can also set it to automatically burn (sell) items you don't want.

You can summon from normal banners using either the gacha currency, saint quartz, or special summon items called summon tickets that you get from log ins and events. Here I will use a summon ticket on Tam Lin Lancelot's banner:

Tam Lin Lancelot is the rate up 5*/SSR character on this banner That means you have a whopping 0.8% chance of pulling her. If you pull 329 times on a single banner and don't get the banner character, your 330th pull is guaranteed to be that rate-up character. It's not the most generous pity system (and I won't even talk about the theoretical other pity system FGO has), but it is possible to save up enough for pity without spending money over the course of a few months.

The silver card back here tells us I summoned a 3* Assassin. Something to note: 3* and below characters are still extremely useful! Don't ignore them just because they aren't the highest rarities.

Now that we have this Servant, let's level her up:

We'll give her special leveling items called blazes. You can technically use other Servants for leveling fodder, but you really shouldn't. This is also how you give Servants Fous to get those bonus stats.

Before the final level cap that requires holy grails to surpass, Servants will hit four other level caps. To get past those, you need to first level up to the cap, and then ascend them using items you get during the game.

In addition to leveling Servants directly, you can also level their skills and append skills independently. Leveling skills requires some of the same items used to ascend Servants. Skills can be leveled to a maximum of 10.

Finally, you can enhance their noble phantasms using extra copies. :siren:Do not try to do this from the same enhancement screen you use for leveling! You'll waste the copy. You need to go to the Noble Phantasm menu in the enhancement tab.:siren:

I said finally, but there are a few other ways you can enhance Servants that mostly don't matter, including command codes (special items you can equip to their combat cards) and beast paws (special items that enhance the strength of their combat cards).

Collecting and enhancing Craft Essences

In addition to Servants, the gacha will also give you special equipment called Craft Essences (CEs). These can be equipped to your Servants to give them extra stats and special abilities. Like Servants, they can also be enhanced. Unlike Servants, the special enhancement items are hard to come by, so for the most part you really do want to use other CEs to level them. If you're not sure which ones are okay to use for leveling, just ask in the thread.

Much like Servants, CEs also have level caps that can be limit broken four times. Unlike Servants, this is done by feeding CEs extra copies from their normal enhancement screen.

Party setup:

1) Set up a party of five of your own Servants + one borrowed from someone else. Your party will consist of three characters in the frontline and three in the backline, and every time someone in the frontline is defeated, they are replaced with the next person in the backline in the order you set them.

2) Equip your Servants with CEs which boost their stats and give them other buffs or debuffs

You have a number of points called cost you can use to set up your party which excludes your borrowed character. The number of points you can use increases as you level up. Higher rarity Servants and CEs cost more:

Servant Cost
1* = 3 Cost
2* & 0* = 4 Cost
3* = 7 Cost
4* = 12 Cost
5* = 16 Cost

CE Cost
1* = 1 Cost
2* = 3 Cost
3* = 5 Cost
4* = 9 Cost
5* = 12 Cost

3) Choose a Mystic Code, which is a piece of equipment that gives you access to unique skills you can use in the battle. This doesn't affect cost.

You can set up everything but your borrowed support character in advance from the menu, and you can save 10 different party combinations to switch between.

Core gameplay loop

Gamepress combat guide

Once you have a party ready, you can enter into various nodes and battles with them. This is what the battle screen looks like:

Combat is turn-based. You start by attacking the enemy. If they live, they attack back.

The icons under the character are skills, which you can use for various buffs and debuffs before initiating combat rounds. Here I'm using Altria's third skill on Da Vinci:

Once you've used whatever skills you want, you click the attack button to set up your attack. Each character has five attack cards that can be one of three types: Buster, Arts, and Quick. Buster does more damage, Arts charges something called the Noble Phantasm gauge, and Quick gives you critical stars which give you a certain chance of landing a critical hit. There are three things that are important to remember when selecting cards:

1) Order matters. From Gamepress's guide:

quote:

A card’s position affects its performance: a card placed in the third position would deal more damage, gain more NP charge, and gain more stars than if it were placed in the second position. As such, it is generally beneficial to put more important cards in the final slot of a card chain. However, to be noted, the first card bonus grants more to the whole chain when compared with card positioning. The details of the effects of card positioning are detailed below:

2) Using three of a kind will give you an additional effect

3) Using three from one character will give you an extra attack. Here I'm using three Arts cards from Da Vinci:

This gives her an extra 20% Noble Phantasm Gauge and lets her get an extra attack in at the end.

Da Vinci's Noble Phantasm, Beautiful Journey, is fully charged. It's basically a limit break-- a large scale attack (single or multiple target) or buff that varies from character to character. You'll get a little unskippable cutscene. Here I had Da Vinci nuke the enemies:

Most enemies also have Noble Phantasms. Instead of a percentage bar they charge with attacks, each turn they have a meter that typically ticks up by one. Once the meter is full, they will almost always use their Noble Phantasm on the following turn.

Once the battle is finished, you get bond points which increase your relationship with your summoned characters. Bonds 1-5 will give you extra lines of dialogue; bonds 6+ will give you the gacha currency; all bonds will give you servant coins.

There's a reason this game is still going strong eight years after release. Have fun!

Common courtesy when setting up Support lists

Ignis posted:

Yeah in general nobody gives a poo poo if the Servants on your support list that aren't the Meta Supports (ie the Servants Batterypowered7 just mentioned) don't have 10/10/10 skills.

Batterypowered7 posted:

By "supports", I meant units like Altria Caster, Waver, Reines, Skadi, Oberon, and Koyanskaya. I've got a support list of nothing but Altrias, for example, and most of them don't have 10/10/10 skills, but all the servants I mentioned previously (spread throughout a few support lists) do.

However, Meta Servants without fully raised skills can make or break farming sessions, so it's common courtesy to not put them up on your Support List until you get them up to speed.

It's also preferred not to put up non-MLB Bella Lisa/Mona Lisa/Chaldea Teatime/Chaldea Lunchtime CEs on your support list, since the difference between MLB and non-MLB is considerable enough to increase farming sessions.

e: I feel like we've had this conversation pretty recently in the old thread, might be worth adding it to the OP?

What should I use Rare Prisms on?

As you play the game, you'll acquire a rare resource aptly called rare prisms. These can primarily be obtained from burning SR or SSR Servants, which YOU SHOULD NOT DO UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMEONE AT NP5 or you really really hate them. These can mainly be used to unlock old event CEs, mystic codes, other items, and costumes. They can also currently be used to unlock some main interlude story content, but that will be made free in the future (and when it is made free, it should refund the spent rare prisms).

While what you should use them on depends on what you need (and which Servants you want costumes for), for a rough priority list spend them on:

Splendid new year mystic code > CE unlocks for chaldea lunchtime > mona lisa > CBC 2017 CE exchange specifically to aqcuire the CE Outrage (this is the ONLY taunt CE currently available to new accounts) > trial quests > CE unlocks for chaldea teatime > bella lisa > other mystic codes > the Fondant and Sweet Crystal CEs (very good but also expensive) > bond grails (very occassionally available for special events like new years or anniversary) > gold fous (handful available in all events) = lores (handful available in all events)

And here's a more in depth priority list courtesy of Conspiratiorist:

Conspiratiorist posted:

Rare Prism priorities:
- 1 RP to unlock Chaldea Lunchtime (be sure to have the 5k MPs first).
- 3 RPs for Heroic Spirit Portrait. No MPs needed on this one.
- 1 RP each to unlock Teatime, Dinnertime, and Foumes.

Luxury Rare Prism picks:
- Monthly Lantern of Chaldea (aka Bond Grails). If you find yourself with spare RPs, this is where they go, since if you play enough you'll eventually need a stock of them. They "cash in" for 30 sq.
- You can buy access to the Prison Tower mini-event and the Main Interludes for their story/rewards. They'll become available for free next year, but you get a refund if previously purchased so there's no harm in getting them ahead if your other RP needs are covered.
- The shop Mystic Codes worth a drat are Fragment of 2004, Ceremonial New Year and Anniversary Blonde for 5 RPs each, but they see significantly less use than current and soon upcoming free options, so I'll hold off until you're sure they're something you want or have a lot of RPs to burn.
- Mona Lisa and Bella Lisa for 1 RP + 5000 MPs each. Combined they provide a +15% bonus to QP farming (plus another 15% for a friend's Bella Lisa and maybe +5% if you've also got Foumes) which is noticeable, but on the other hand we get enough QP from events and the improved Treasure Vault quests themselves that I don't think it's worthwhile picking them up. Personally I haven't touched Doors in years, and the only people I habitually see running the QP dailies are the two extremes of either big spenders that hit QP cap during lottos then tap out through heavy rolling in-between, and people who barely play the game as-is so find themselves unprepared when they pull a SSR and need to farm all the mats and QP on the spot.
- For 3 RPs you can buy Beginning of the Journey, a very low party cost CE that provides a 75 Friend Point bonus both to yourself and your selected support friend. While you can stick it somewhere in your backline while playing party cost tetris, nowadays we have enough Bond Bonus CEs available to fill up all slots, and bond is honestly the more valuable resource. Still handy for FP farming but that's a low priority for most accounts.
- For 3 RPs you can buy Outrage from the Chaldea Boys Collection 2019 lineup. This is a very niche, but very unique CE that enables sacrificial support rotation strats for challenging content.
- Fondant and Sweet Crystal are quite useful CEs, but at 25 RPs each I'd just hold off on getting them until we get that big 100+ RP payout 2 years from now.

Buying Lores and Gold Fous is for whales.

General Advice

StrixNebulosa posted:

General advice for newbies:

- don't rush it. This is a game you play a little of every day, with larger bursts of activities when events roll around, or if you're really excited for a story chapter (this will happen more often once you get into the really good chapters!)

- raise your favorites, then raise everyone else, for several reasons.
- as a pve game, everyone is to some degree viable, and the difficulty doesn't get going until camelot and beyond - at which point you'll have a bigger roster, a better grasp of mechanics, and more goon friends who have whaled and have excellent units (like castoria!)
- raise everyone because EVERY* servant, at max ascension, begins to unlock interludes and rank-up quests which get you more story content and saint quartz. also there are events that require you to use lower-rarity servants, so it's easier if you have a full roster.

*some servants have neither but they love to add more of both all the time

- gamepress' servant analysis and rankings are fun to read but come from an alternate dimension where they play PVP in their minds, so take their stuff with a grain of salt. Bad servants can still be useful.

- pull for love. pull rarely and stockpile your SQ, because the RNG is bullshit and pity is 900SQ. If you get lucky, celebrate! remember that pity is 900SQ and do not whale.

- level your craft essences too, they're powerful buffs and you also get more SQ for leveling and limit breaking them

- take your time, don't stress, have fun. you have a mountain of content ahead of you and I'm so jealous. Wish I could read Babylonia for the first time again.

gonna copy the list of tools i posted in the last thread and add a couple more
  • Fate/Grand Automata, the autobattle app that makes grinding tolerable if your roster's at the point where you're pressing the same buttons in the same order every fight.
  • Atlas Academy DB, the datamined database that automatically updates within an hour or so of a new version with everything that's in the game's files. Also has a script reader.
  • Gamepress, another wiki for the game. They have guides for getting through events. Mainly aimed at NA players.
  • Fate/Grand Order Wikia, another wiki for the game. Generally up-to-date with JP content.
  • Rayshift, which lets you look up support lists easily, and get a nicely-formatted image of your support list.
  • Rayshift's TranslateFGO, a translation patch app for JP Android players (does not need a rooted phone).
  • Fate/Grand Companion, a tool for helping you sort out which GSSR banner to roll on.
  • Chaldea, a material planner app that includes a mission solver.
  • Tri-Hermes, which has scripts for the various events, useful since it includes the fan translation for JP players where Atlas Academy's script viewer doesn't.
  • a reddit post describing how to copy your save file to another device so that you don't have to keep messing around with transfer codes. here's what it says if you don't want to click on the link or if reddit's burned down when you're reading this later:

You have to do this after installing from Google Play or APK and before launching the game on the new device or instance.

    Save Locations:
    [NA] Storage/Android/data/com.aniplex.fategrandorder.en/files/data
    [JP] Storage/Android/data/com.aniplex.fategrandorder/files/data

You will have to copy these files and put it at the same location in your target device or emulator. They start with:
    • 54cc
    • 969b
    • 644b
    • e1a9
Open up the game and it will show your friend ID on the bottom if you done it correctly.

I got so tilted over doing 200 rolls on Morgan's banner without a single 5* that I made myself a secondary account. Which got promptly blessed with NP2 Morgan in 20 rolls, then Castoria and Ozymandias in another 30, and a Melusine soon after (forgot to track the rolls at this point). Currently got 400 SQ for Koyanskaya and I haven't done the temple of solomon yet. Maybe it will continue to be absurdly blessed compared to my main account which I'm honestly considering dropping at this point. Only downside is since the account is brand new it has no resources for getting skill levels up even as I use my pure prisms pretty freely, and I can't get anything to 10 at all until we get events.

The big default picks are Waver and Tamamo, since they're support casters. They've both been slightly powercrept but Waver still has uses in some farm teams and Tamamo still has uses for art teams in challenge quests.

If you have them both, I'd recommend just going for a good AOE servant in a class you don't have a good AOE servant in.

My GSSR was the worst possible outcome, exactly like last year. Only one character on the banner I didn’t want, Himiko in this case, and that’s who I get. Not that there’s anything wrong with her but I already have her and the NP2 upgrade is so minor as to be practically meaningless.

Koyan rolls went better. Got her in about 400sq if we’re counting tickets as part of that to keep it simple, and she came with the last copy of Black Grail I needed to mlb it. Pretty cool. This also means I have enough to pity Oberon if necessary, which I’m very thankful for. Nothing else I really care about until Super Bunyan next year so I can afford to go all in to complete the buster support duo.

Fight for all that is beautiful in the world

My lucky bag was one last shot at Mel, risky as gently caress for a banner with masamune (have) gogh (have) summer Kiara (have) and summer Abby (bad) on it, but I went for luck

It ended up being snake lady Saber. She's new so welcome to the team!

On the JP side, Summer Hokusai, Summer Jalter and Summer Scathach are now in the shop. Also, new missions for leaves and SQ, and a strengthening quest for Summer Scathach. her taunt skill now gives her self dmg up vs Divine enemies and NP charge
