Another month, another thread about the greatest circus on earth. (Okay, so Congress technically isn't gridlocked anymore, but it still applies.) Last month brought us the new 114th United States Congress with a renewed Republican majority, who now hold both houses. After a fairly bad month featuring a number of early missteps, and a relatively successful State of the Union speech by President Obama, Republicans are looking forward to a fresh start in February. With Keystone XL now only needing to pass the House one more time, the impending end of the continuing resolution to fund DHS, and the end of the debt ceiling moratorium in mid-March, Republicans may very well seize the opportunity. As the USPol thread knows though, there's always more, and it is always worse, so buckle up, because it's going to be a bumpy ride! (Credit to Sockser, with apologies to John Rule) Here Comes Trollbama! Following another shellacking in the 2014 polls, Obama has apparently transformed into an otherworldly being known as "Trollbama". Possibly related to the mythical "Campaign Obama" (and equally powerless to achieve political ends requiring the passage of legislation), this creature has been hard at work in January (especially in his State of the Union speech).
114th Congress Bingo Card Last month, I pulled together a number of predictions for what the 114th Congress would do. Now's as good a time as any to recap some of the highlights that came up last month and that might pop up this month.

Related threads "US Politics" is an incredibly broad topic, as A) the country is freaking huge and B) given our role in international events pretty much everything impacts us. So there are other subthreads 2016 Presidential Primary 2016 US Senate Elections SCOTUS thread Right Wing Media There are also regional subthreads that are usually pretty slow, but sometimes cross-pollinate with this thread when something important is happening. Pacific Northwest Illinois Texas California There was a South thread, too, but it's been dead since last July. Lifted the rest of the above from FriedChicken's OP last month. As before post suggestions for adding to the above and I'll edit them in. And remember folks, drink chat goes in D&D chat thread. Drink responsibly. Your liver will thank you. Well done on the prompt OP! I'm curious to see what Obama does about parental leave. I believe he mentioned pushing for 6 weeks for govt employees, but as I understand it that would take a law. So not likely, in other words.

Here's hoping our pointless hostility towards Iran eases up a bit this year. Not much chance with this congress but we can dream. E: great job on the OP btw, Cosmo.

Thanks for taking up the USPol OP, Comrade. I wish to recommend Matt Taibbi's 'The Divide' for books relevant to inequality and regulatory capture. Fried Chicken, thank you for all your hard work, as well, and to everyone for helping keep me abreast of the suicidally-depressing goings on in this country.

Griftopia is a good read too, and Maddow's Drift is a great analysis of how US military power got so ridiculous and irrational. Perlstein's trilogy should also be in the recommended reading.

Went ahead and added those books to the OP, fixed my omission of parental leave when I mention sick leave, and added Ta-Nehisi Coates's "The Case for Reparations" to the list of recommended Long Pieces. Considered adding the only other long piece that I remembered off the top of my head (Mac McClelland's "A Visit to the Warehouse of Soul-Crushing Sadness" from Mother Jones) to try to give the two Atlantic pieces some company, but concluded that it didn't really have enough national relevance to justify its presence (even if Nickel and Dimed does), so unless anyone objects or has any suggestions, it's just the two long pieces from The Atlantic for now. Also, I don't follow political Twitter much myself, so suggestions there are welcome. (Robert Costa, maybe?) EDIT: If you do make a Twitter suggestion, I'd appreciate it greatly if you included a small blurb about it that I can rework so that the account names aren't just sitting there with no explanation. I'll add a Twitter recommendation for thread favourite Dave Weigel of Bloomberg News, formerly at Slate. Weigel is a keen journalist who is able to score interviews with tons of major GOP players and kingmakers. He does devote an inordinate amount of time to trolling on Twitter, so that may annoy people, but as a resource for important upcoming stories and trends, he's second only to possibly Costa. He is, contrary to popular opinion, not D&D superstar Joementum.
