Best show of the season, and that's saying something with Yurucamp also being spectacular.

On the other hand, maybe she just didn't want anyone else opening her 'extra weird porn' folder. It probably gets real boring on that trip.

I was kinda expecting to find her mom's dead body but somehow what they did hit harder than if that were the case.

It's weird to think she's probably only a few hundred yards from the base at most.

It's because this show is super well written. Seriously, it's really masterful in how it sets up elements, reminds the viewer subtly without making it overt, and then lands the payoff. For example you have the thing about the money which was introduced purely as a 'gee this girl is weirdly obsessive', which becomes a possible device to get them to Antarctica, which we are reminded about in the midpoint of the series, and then when you've almost forgotten about it, is there again as a symbol of Shirase's determination, *and* a foreshadowing of the email counter.

A particular point I really liked - we've had all these shots through the series of Shirase looking at her phone with a blank email to her mother on it. All this time I assumed it was the same email every time, and that she couldn't figure out the words to send. This episode, of course, revealed that I was wrong. She'd been sending them all this time, and longer. Every single day, most assuredly. She never once forgot or stopped trying.

I don't know, there's almost no precipitation in Antarctica so I think it would take much longer. I don't know about snow drift though.

I'm pretty sure blizzards are pretty common, much like Sandstorms are in the desert. I can't imagine it would take more than a couple to make Takako's body nigh-impossible to find, and she's been down there for three years.

Depends where it's at I guess, there's a fokker biplane from the early early expeditions still kicking in Antarctica, it's just a bit skeletonized from windlash.

Sure, though a biplane seems quite a bit harder to bury than a corpse.

It's kind of my own fault since I don't think the show ever set up or intended to build upon this, but I can't quite feel closure on the whole Shirase arc until I know what her mom was saying was "so beautiful". She's almost certainly just talking about the Antarctic itself and/or the stars in the sky (though she probably couldn't see them given there was a blizzard so maybe not) but the fact we've had several scenes that give that line a bit of focus as her last communication with anyone in seemingly a dying breath make me curious if there wasn't something more singular she was referring to. The episode itself was fantastic and that scene with Shirase watching the email count mount before she finally "wakes up" and everyone busts out crying was a strong end but I just can't feel it's done at the moment because of that one hanging element.

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

I mean, how is that a hanging element? Gin's entire bit has been in direct relation to that line, all those shots of her staring at the night sky and her framing 'the only person she could love' with the antarctic sky. Gin heard those last words and literally every emotionally meaningful shot Gin has had in this entire show has used the night sky as framing. That bit has its closure and it has been built upon. It's the foundation of every piece of visual language they've used with Gin.

How is it implied she only started finding the Antarctic or it's sky beautiful after Takako died and not that someone who set out to visit that place and build an observatory there found it beautiful all along? Especially when her line about what she seeks/loves was said about the sky in Tokyo before Takako died during Shirase's flashback?

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

its not like she didnt find it beautiful before but it attained a specific meaning for her, as shown by all the wistful shots of her staring at it while thinking about takako?

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
An explicitly stated theme of the latest episode was "it's fun because we came here together." I think we can make the obvious corollary that "it's beautiful because I saw it with you."

I agree that this seems like one of those elements we will address in episode 13.

Especially since it has been brought to my attention that Takako has an unsent email on her computer

When I go back and rewatch this, I'm going to try to keep an eye out for the times that onions are shown being prepared. I'm thinking they actually have been using that to sort of foreshadow that someone (as well as the viewer) will be crying soon, but I'm not sure.
