Beef Eater posted:Are Microsoft Surfaces the only tablets with Windows? I think all the major vendors have a Windows tablet, they're just not very popular relative to the standard clamshell laptop. I believe most people who want a tablet intend to use it for artwork and the Surface historically has had the best stylus support; the other common use case is handwriting notes and it looks like the 2-in-1 convertible market has cannibalized the tablet market for that.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 9i. It's thin enough overall that 'tablet mode' is usable. Plus it has pretty decent horsepower with a 13gen i7. Just wish it had more/upgradeable RAM.

namlosh posted:I use JSON every day… XML and JSON have different use cases. Saying one sucks is like saying “trucks suck, my car is fine” Many projects I worked on used XML because it was the best option. Those same projects would surely have gone with JSON if designed today. Within this context, XML sucks. For instance, WebDAV PROPFIND. I'm not trying to diss on XML here, it's very nice for the right application. I was just shitposting a hot take in what seemed like a lighthearted "complain about technology" thread.

How dare you sully the sanctity of the Windows 11 thread with your “banter”?? I say, “good day sir!” For real: My hot take is that JSON gets way over-utilized today in things that won’t benefit from its small size/parsing performance benefits and that are definitely harmed by its lack of structure and type safety. I see people today who never consider using XML for anything ever and that sucks Windows 11: I really like it and have been lucky so far, but I started getting that “icons pinned to the taskbar are disappearing on my main monitor” thing. Any fix for that?

This weird thing: I wish it took windows 11. It supposedly can do 10 but not very well. It's the ideal size for like, pulling up a tutorial or something while you're doing something where you can't have a browser open.

Wasn't the common consensus that Windows 8 is the best option for touchscreen devices anyway since it was built with them in mind first and foremost? I know I've mostly detested the user experience on my Surface 3 (lol) since day one with Windows 10 because it's basically unusable without a keyboard and trackpad. Windows 8 had a better sidebar and a start screen that was responsive on my PC at least and would've made perfect sense on a tablet, less so on a desktop.

Microsoft did Windows 8 as a panicked response to the iPad selling well and the end product is exactly what a rushed out idea looks like. I still think they should have put a bit more effort in with Windows Phone because having only Apple and Google in the space is pretty rough.

10 and 11 do a much better job of directly integrating touch into the OS than having everything separated or making the OS explicitly touch first, I wouldn't say 8 is better for touch because 10 and 11 work just as well but don't make compromises to the desktop experience.

I did almost 2 years with a Windows 8 tablet and then 5? years with a Windows 10 one as my daily driver, without keyboard. The only thing Windows 8 did better was better access to the brightness slider. Admittedly, from the get go I've only used them both exclusively in desktop mode because there was nothing on that app store I cared about. There are a -to me- surprising number of games that flat out refuse to install or run if there is no keyboard connected. C&C Generals being a notable exception, if you're ever looking for something playable on a tablet. Ish, anyway.

The error code (IRQL not less or equal) is almost always caused by either a hardware fault or driver bug, and since the driver is the Microsoft provided driver, it's more likely to be a hardware fault causing abnormal conditions.

Has anyone has trouble with installing a newer version of ExplorerPatcher? I just got upgraded to 23H2 22631.3593. I downloaded EP 22621.3527.65, but even after a complete uninstall-reinstall cycle, I still have EP 3296.64.1. Any ideas?

Once upon a time there were different shells that people used to replace the stock Explorer. Is that still remotely a thing in Win11, or did people get sick of Microsoft trying to yank the rug out from under them?
