Yoji Shinkawa's cybernetic designs have always been cool in the Metal Gear games but I'm especially liking the contrast between his understated yet futuristic look and the desolate feel of the world map. The auto-delivery robots are a good example, they're absurd from a basic conceptual standpoint but designed in a way that you can imagine an actual engineer creating them for purpose with technology that either already exists or isn't too far off.

i laughed way harder than i expected to when you do the first automated delivery and the robot stomps triumphantly away singing "DOO-doo doot doo doooo doot doot do-do doooo!"

I can't remember if I've posted in this thread before (it seems weirdly fine for a Wizard Master thread), but I always thought Betrayer had a great sensibility to it. Haven't played it in a long time. I'll also second the Dishonored games as in the top tier of my personal favorites.

The Fallout 4 DLC Far Harbor had a good atmosphere and style to it. I actually liked Rage 2 a fair amount, partly because the esthetic design was solid. And I have a soft spot for Shadow Warrior 2 - it had a nice visual language to it, even with the trollish bits.

And Cyberpunk 2077 is really well-designed and looks beautiful.

Just played through Ashes 2063.

What if Stalker, Fallout and Doom had a baby? Well this is it and I didn't know I wanted it so bad. Post nuclear apocalypse Mad Max world with scary labs and bunkers like Stalker, with awesome Doom-like movement centric fighting punctuating the exploration. Humans and mutants. Towns with people to talk to and things to do. Kickass weapons and lots of fun references. Just dripping with atmosphere, all helped along with great original soundtrack and effects.

Also, it's free! It's a standalone Doom mod you can just download unzip and run.

Here's the polar opposite: Sable.

A relaxing game that looks like it was drawn by Hergé. It's an open world adventure purely about exploring and climbing, with no combat. Sable goes out into the world to find their place, choose their path in life, and prepare for their coming of age ceremony. The game is also as buggy as hell unfortunately, but the beauty, atmosphere and superb OST make it worth it.

this is great fun

the awful voice acting done by some guy speaking into a 2000s skype microphone is also quite charming

Yeah I hate that Rockstar painstakingly crafts these huge realistic worlds and then fills them with cringey poo poo. At least they don't do that in RDR.

Yeah.

I might be overthinking this, but I'm pretty sure that joke is about vending machines. If you know, you know. I mean, the number 69 was plastered everywhere in GTA:SA, to the point that I got tired of seeing it.

The game has its share of problems but I like the techno slum future vibe that Observer has going. Crowded disgusting tenements, trash everywhere, misanthropy, distrust, I really feel transported to current day New York City

when i was younger i would walk around empty half life 2 deathmatch maps on empty servers just sort of admiring whenever there was serious work put in. and one was called amsterdam or something, i dunno, but it was set in a city by a river with a fully modeled police station, fire station, jail, shops, restaurants, secret tunnels and lots of just street. the map was set on a stormy night with the dark gray above only sometimes raining. i didnt even know that was something you could do in hammer. so id walk around a bit this deserted city with my crowbar out and the occasional drizzle, complete with tons of ambient sfx. very cool

so yeah just imagine above with 2004 graphics and the gravity gun

Some games that I think have some wonder aesthetics are:

American Mcgee's Alice: Looks lovely now but you could tell love was put into this game. Everything felt appropriate to the theme and the story was excellent. The cheshire cat was wonderful and the environment mixed with the music still gives me chills.

Rust: The newer land generation isn't as good but it feels like a place. Sunrise and sunset over the ocean or horizon can be beautiful.

OG Doom: Even though the game kind of looks like poo poo now, the style is cohesive and fast. Everything makes sense in its own context. My favorite maps were the ones by the original crew and John Romero. Sandy Petersen's maps, while lending themselves better to the gameplay just felt sloppy to me. In fact, most of doom II's maps felt sloppy and unfinished.

alice is dope and doom doesnt look bad at all not sure what youre trying to imply there. that said, rust? really? rust?

Yeah, rust has its moments. It's got good sound design and some scenes are just nice to look at even though it's largely an unstructured island with stuff on it.

dont know if its been mentioned itt but Townscaper is a very pretty and relaxing little city builder

and by "city builder" i dont mean a simcity type thing. there's not much of an objective or game, you're just playing with blocks and making a pretty town. but its got a great aesthetic

no. its just blocks. you can place blocks and delete blocks, and also change the color of the blocks you are placing. there are certain configurations you have to do to get specific results like a green field or clotheslines between blocks or certain shapes of towers etc. thats the entirety of the mechanics. there's no population or resources to manage or anything. you have infinite blocks and an infinite space in which to put them

it is coming to 1.0 on the 28th but RIPOUT seems like it was tailor made for me, youre a guy going through derelict space craft with a weapon thats alive and can attack and posesses enemies and its basically DOOM/dead space but a roguelite FPS and it has made me jump like a dozen times from just a guy getting up i wasnt expecting to or just oops that door had a giant mutant behind it

The survival horror game Crow Country just came out a little while ago and the I really like the aesthetics of it. It looks like a cross between final fantasy 7 and silent hill:

helldivers 2 weapons and soldiers are fine, its enemies are very good, but the landscapes and the way each planet is so horribly beautiful even when it's an irradiated smogscape full of toxic waste pools is just incredible.

Yeah a lot of 90's sprite work still holds up, and Doom and Blood both had great aesthetics. Bloods decisions just to go all in on campy horror was an excellent one.

Would love to see a blood sequel done these days done in one of the updated build engines they have now.
