If the anime had done something like what the manga did and had the three of them fight Frieza or somebody else strong for a bit and actually look like a team he'd probably be a little more popular. Hard to have a less flattering role than just being 'Vegeta's little buddy', anyway.

If you're using those noises unchanged then you have to deal with how you pay for, attribute and license the sounds. On the other hand you can pay a dub actor to make gurgling sounds and avoid all that.
