I had a practice run a few hours prior that went way better but... sometimes Wheelchair Mr. Big trolls the hell out of you. The rest of the game was sloppy too, it's not good to be losing so many lives early on since you need them for the end. I think I'm more sad about bombing out on Shinobi. No continues so I couldn't even show the end. Not a good start! People have been getting bodied in a lot of games thus far. Oh well, I still get to do 4 more games: NAM-1975 and Chimera Beast in the early hours, and then Metal Slug and Shock Troopers near the end of the event. I'm really pumped about getting to show Shock Troopers for a lot of people, oh man... Also, DanAdamKOF is my hero for fixing important sound issues that we were having

Is there something I am missing about IIDX? It seems like a cool game, but 3 hours of prime time to watch what seemed like some buddies just playing songs was kinda weird. The doubles run last night was interesting but I would have preferred some 1v1 challenge play or something. Some other games that seemed more interesting from a playthrough and commentary perspective got put in some bogus time slots comparatively.

Infinitas doesn't allow two players at once only single/doubles but IIDX isn't really a game about facing off directly most of the time as the level these guys play at is "max" being 100% perfect greats in a song. It's something hard to appreciate if you haven't played the game yourself to realize how freaking hard it is but its more like the TGM block just "we're going to show some cool stuff and pray the game doesn't crap on us." Like when phnix played mei you saw him do what's called random fishing because the song is so hard and the chart layout is unapproachable unless you can switch the lanes into something you're comfortable with. With random on the game the notes remain in the same pattern but it shifts lanes so like the first and last lane may switch or whatever. With the density of the buttons on 12s you have to use random because it will break up chords so they aren't so heavy on one hand and the slow down/speed up in mei just murders your judge bar. That said though DP red was amazing. I think due to scheduling they were short on time so doubles tonight wasn't as long as intended but such is marathons flyboi fucked around with this message at 04:08 on Oct 23, 2016 |

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, I guess since I don't normally watch twitch streams there is probably some nuance to the showmanship that gets missed. My heart rate actually went up watching that shmup run oh my god.

Some other games that seemed more interesting from a playthrough and commentary perspective got put in some bogus time slots comparatively. IIDX is a pretty poor competitive game as far as on-the-spot competitions go, especially in the US where there aren't that many really high level players - I think there are 2 dudes, with PHNX being one of them, in all of NA that would stand a chance on the world stage so to speak, and that chance would still be very very low. Unless you had those 2 players facing off, or found 2 other players of close skill level further down the line to face off with each other, it would be a stomp. The more relevant competitive aspect of the game is the built in score tracker and leaderboards. You can compare your own score to anyone else on the network and set your own rivals to compete with friends. With the nature of how skill progression in the game works though, it's likely that the majority of your scores are gonna be lower than someone else who is even just a little better than you.

If you want to see competitive play here's two of the most top players in the world facing off and is fairly recent https://youtube.com/watch?v=U7ZtQRD3d9c You can also see how random changes the play between both players as well

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little salty about this too! There's a lot of cool games that are happening in the "graveyard" shift. Donkey Kong, DDR, IIDX, and Tetris getting multiple "prime time" spots.... like, I understand why it's happening, but there's some really cool games coming up that people might miss. Darius Gaiden, Raimais, The Ninja Warriors, Trio the Punch, PuLiRuLa, etc... Plus I'm doing NAM-1975 and Chimera Beast, the latter of which is super loving weird (but not quite Trio the Punch weird). It's my fault for signing up so many games, but hoo boy my schedule for tonight is rough. Barring any more delays or schedule shuffles, I got things to run at 3:45 am, 8:00 am... and then I gotta wait to do my last two games at 4:10 pm. Oof!

I can appreciate the difficulty of what they were doing with Beatmania, but it's not something I want to watch 3 hours of and take up a prime viewing spot. Worst of all, as someone who is listening to this with headphones on, the clicks of them practicing the game was coming through the mic during a lot of runs and was incredibly distracting/annoying.

I think I just don't "get" video games past a certain level of visual complexity. I loved playing DDR in college, but I was in it to really dance, like I tried to focus on making it look good (ahahahahahaha) over trying to riverdance on a maniac chart. I like Rock Band, but I can't even see what's happening in iidx, let alone parse it as having anything to do with the song being played. Bullet hell games just depress me because people will sit there (even on this stream) going "I love this pattern, it looks gross, but it's not difficult to get through" and I sit there going "that is literally more difficult-looking than doing brain surgery in front of the President." I know all these people are the best in the world, that's why they're there, but man is it a drag. I come away from it feeling like "wow, there's no point in playing any more games because I can't even handle the "easy" stuff. In other news, I would have said Bump n Jump, but I totally thought it was suggested already. Whoops. Also the weird stuff outside of prime time is totally why I'm watching. Had to sack out during the ninja game after NAM and now I'm at the eye doctor's to drive for my partner while her eyes are dilated, but I plan on watching as many VODs as I can to see the real weirdness.

Mame cabs are where it's at, I had one back home and it was incredible for parties. If I built one again I'd either do a candy cab or even like a pair of slide-in overhang panels for couch play since I already have a huge TV connected to the PC in the living room. Past the nostalgia the stand-up cabinets are actually a pain in the rear end, they are huge, heavy, and pretty drat uncomfortable for long plays. You might even look at picking up a dead cabinet, gutting it, swapping the monitor for a flat panel and putting in a new custom control panel. Most big cities have dead cabinets for free if you pick it up, or under $100 at least. Something low profile like this would be dope

I imagine there's probably a $400-500 markup on one like in that listing, that's a large tax for being lazy.
