There's still a blockbuster in Sandy, OR. I almost want to drive out there just to step into the past.

There's a movie rental place near my cottage that I go to sometimes. Managed to snag a copy of The Raid 1 + 2, Upstream Colour and a couple other movies that they were selling.

I worked at Movie Gallery which was like a pink version of Blockbuster. One time, a guy broke into our lovely games case where we sold new games. He left with a bunch of DS stuff. I was distracted by checking out a long line of people when some kids came over towards me and told me that a fat guy was acting suspiciously at the case. I finished checking out some lady and then walked over. The fat guy loving booked it out of the store, I slowly walked towards him and watched him get in his car and drive away. I called the cops and manager, said what happened. Next day at work, people were telling stories about how I chased the guy to his car while shouting at him. Also had two separate coworkers that loved smoking weed behind the store. One took 500 bucks from the safe when he got fired.

Before we got a blockbuster we had this kickass little local video store. Biggest collection of SNES and Genesis games and nice collection porn in a room in the back whose door was never closed. I loved that place as a kid.

Pneub posted:My local Family Video has had a car crash through the same wall twice in like 5 years. It isn't even anywhere close to the road, and it wasn't a dvd hijacking plot as far as I know. This happened at two different Blockbusters that I worked at. At one, this kid named Clay was shelving movies and got smashed up pretty bad. But he was sort of a dick.

We had a chain called Video Update locally, and I got scared by a cardboard cutout for Mike Tyson's Punchout and cried as a small boy.

As a kid I remember going to Blockbuster a lot with my dad to rent a lot of Xbox original games, and even earlier in time Family Video to look through their PS1 games. I remember renting a lot of racing games like Need For Speed Underground and ATV vs MX, lol. My dad would always get stuff like Splinter Cell or a lot of random JRPGs for the PS1 that I'll probably never remember. When my friends would stay over we'd sometimes convince my parents to drive us to Blockbuster, and we'd always sneak off and snicker about the really dumb games like The Guy Game, Playboy Mansion, or the Leisure Suit Larry Xbox games. 4th grade was sweet. Eventually my dad stopped taking us there because it seemed like the discs were always scratched and would be unplayable. He'd get soo mad because it was a 40 minute trip there and back lol. The summer of 2007 and 2008 a realllly lovely movie store opened up called Hometown Video. In my small town of about 2000 people, this place was right in the middle and within biking distance for my friends. It was connected to a used car lot, and it was ran by an extemely weird couple who were of course also used car salesmen. The video store probably couldn't have passed building codes had it ever been inspected, and it had really weird hours where it was only open from like noon until four. As for the movie collection, they never ever got anything new. These movies had to have come from an estate sale or something, and half of their movies were B movie VHS tapes. There was never another customer in there when I was, but they had this giant white board of people's names that said DO NOT RENT, which was funny because everyone in my small town knew one another. Anyways, in the summer when our parents were at work we'd bike there and pick out the sleaziest and worst horror movies we could find, or at least something that seemed to promise a girl with her top off. This started on our first trip to the store when we mistakingly rented http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382014/ instead of what I assumed was going to be a classic take on the HG Wells story I had just read earlier before school let out for the summer. (the cover wasn't present and the case had just read as Invisible Man) Anyways we popped the tape in and realized the place apparently didn't bother to card middle schoolers who wanted to rent softcore porn. That summer we spent renting a lot of really great classics like that and so bad they're funny movies like Troll 2, Frost Bite, Silent Night Deadly Night 2, Jack Frost, another bad take on an HG Wells piece called The Island of Dr Moreau, and a lot more. The final nail in the coffin for us renting from there was when they let us rent one of those underground snuff horror films. It was always a dare amongst us to rent it, and one day we did. We were kids who grew up together where linking meatspin to your friends on myspace or changing their family's desktop wallpaper to goatse during a sleepover was common. Luckily we still had some sort of childhood innocence in us, and we shut off the snuff video (which was like a dude just ripping videos online of people and animals dying etc) before it ever got too gruesome. My friends and I were pretty hosed up looking back lol. props to whoever reads this wall of text lmao

I worked at a Blockbuster that was downtown and really sucked to be honest. Trying to close at midnight on a Friday or Saturday was the worst because you had to chase out the drunks who would try to insist they only needed one more minute to find a movie. Once, a manager I was closing with pushed a guy out of the store, took off his Blockbuster shirt and started fighting with him in the street for refusing to leave. He told me he "couldn't get fired" because he took off his company shirt before fighting. Also, one time I was re-shelving new releases (so I was facing the perimeter wall with my arms full of movies) and some homeless dude ran his hand down my hair.

I remember being in a Blockbuster near Halloween and someone put Evil Dead 2 on the 'show movies/previews/etc'. It WAS past 9 or so, but the film only made it to I think Ash chainsawing his girlfriend's head before it got shut off. I have to wonder who didn't know the details there. Also, my first best friend stole my dad's wallet and got caught because he and another friend of his went and rented games on my father's Blockbuster account, including Final Fantasy III, which they then kept past due, which got our attention and ended up with the dumb kid getting caught red handed on the security camera. I also remember being REALLY young and finding a mom and pop's video store's porn section which was behind double doors ala a saloon. Being like...5, I only registered "Saloon doors! I need to walk dramatically through them like cowboys do!" and did it a few times. My very young brain was incapable of comprehending what I saw though: all I remember now is knocking the doors open and the most vague, fuzzy memory of a blur of pink and girl's faces. Finally there was another video store (might have been the same one) where in and out movies were indicated by these little plastic tags stuck on velcro, and if they were out the tag was gone. I remember for some reason there were two color tags, red and blue; red tag films could be rented by anyone but blue tag films could only be rented by people who had an address in a specific neighborhood (where I didn't live) and I was always cross because there were a few 'blue tag only' films in the kid's section I could never watch and hence my childish curiosity was deeply irked.

I used to work there. Once, a lady came in and wanted to open an account. I gave her the form and told her we needed an ID. She made a huge scene, started screaming and told me that I was "a racialist cracker" and the cops had to be called to remove her. Because I needed her ID.

We needed two forms of ID, which would send people into an instant bitchfest. The staggering number of people who claimed they didn't have a drivers license, but drove to blockbuster anyway was alarming.
