One week to go before the Early Access release! Did any of you pre-ordering idiots waste your money to unlock this game a whole 48 hours before anyone else? If so, I'll be seeing you next Wednesday. ;-*

Based on some leaked Day 1 patch notes, it appears that all versions of Shadow will come with photo mode and immersive mode, which I'm imagining disables most or all UI elements. There's also an option to disable highlight text on pickups! I'm looking forward to taking some sick-nasty screenshots of no-scoping a jaguar with a tastefully applied filter.

It's me I'm an idiot

According to the internet those minimum specs are about equal to Rise of the Tomb Raider while recommended settings are bumped a bit higher. Nixxes incorporated some :pcgaming: extras in the last port like VXAO and full screenspace reflections, but as I recall Rise scaled down pretty well. I already know the dense foliage and shadows are gonna put a hurtin’ on my five-year old i5.

Preload is up, 25GB. Figured it'd be a lot bigger than that.

25GB was about the size of Rise with all DLC installed iirc. According to reddit though X-Box users have a 44.2GB download size, so who knows! Maybe there will be an optional download for 4k megatextures once the game goes live. They've shown off of the bonus outfits already, and you get to be an ugly bird of death.

Ooh very nice! Looks like they've also brought back the TR2013 tank top and jacket from the Croft Manor scenes in Rise. The other pre-order outfit I've seen looks to be a pretty standard explorer getup with a shotgun. Really hoping this game can push the envelope of highly detailed mud and grime physics.

Rise of the Tomb Raider should have been called Apathy of the Tomb Raider. It's not a bad game, but it's so remarkably safe and boring that it doesn't qualify as a good game either. Maybe if there was multiple locales instead of grey-brown Siberia and ten minutes of Syria. And if Lara had her signature guns and her life-experience from the last game instead of starting over.

Also I really think skill-trees and leveling systems in non-RPGs are seldom handled well. The skills themselves either make you 5% better at killing things, or there's a placebo effect and you have a 5% chance of killing things in the one hit. Dying Light was generic as hell but executed the skill-tree well because you feel stronger, faster, and more efficient by the endgame. No upgrade in Rise made a mite of difference.

This game looks incredibly pretty.

I guess it helps that there is more to see than a frozen wasteland with some trees sprinkled in. Rise had quite good graphics, but there wasn't really much to see there. This looks really great.

The storytelling isn’t bad. It’s melodramatic and in places hamfisted but it was a surprising and good departure from the earlier games, and it take Lara through a pretty classic hero’s journey, so if you’re looking for groundbreaking prose you don’t get that here. But in the details of the character’s growth and her difficult relationships with other people, there’s a lot to like and care about. The story of the second game was a lot more forgettable to me than the first and I’m curious how the third will play out since it seems like the setup of the story consists of Lara forgetting the lesson she learned at the end of the second game (sometimes it is best for secrets to remain secrets and mysteries to be left alone).

They made the right call having her do a forced/fake smile. If they'd given her a genuine one or various goofy poses a la Link in BOTW it'd come across as creepy at best, inappropriate at others (that bound-up mummy - a sacrifice victim maybe?) As it is having the semi-pained look puts it on just the right side of campy.

I don't have autism (because I do have dyscalculia so I had to see a bunch of learning specialists and through testing growing up, ergo it would've been spotted if I had) and I majored in English while pursuing a minor in Film Studies; and I don't agree that it's "bad" storytelling per se. (Especially by gaming standards.) I'd put it right on the level of a pulp adventure story or a popcorn movie because these are epic adventures with big action setpieces that don't have uber-original stories or plots, and they don't have deep characterization, nor do they have much artistic/cultural merit, and there's not really a statement about life or politics or the human condition being made. This does not make the TR reboot series stories "bad" but it does make them...well, simple, pulpy, and epic. If someone thinks that's "bad" that's their opinion, but not every story can be both epic and literary. (Or should.)

Most games you play have "bad" stories in that they're so simple and lacking of drama and character development that there's not much there at all. (Or they just suck, like, say, Daikatana's plot and characters.) As the saying goes, no one plays Super Mario/Street Fighter/etc. for the plot. If your story is just "hero fights villain, hero wins, the end", then there's not much going on. Add some layers to the plot and the characters - like the one about Lara's stepmother in the last, for instance - and you might have something that's an improvement on what you normally get.

Not that any game in the TR series has been a "great" story, mind you, but it's certainly not been "bad." Maybe "could have been better"?

I don't think the reboot stories are offensively bad or anything, just very formulaic action movies without a whole lot of character development. This was fine in the very well-paced TR2013 but Rise kind of suffered from being the second, much bigger game in a trilogy and the plot spun its wheels a whole bunch. I don't really play these games for the story, though but to play as a crazed thrill-killing treasure hunter in exotic environments. And for that, they deliver!

The early reviews are in and it appears to be sitting around 80 in Metacritic across all platforms. For better or for worse there appear to be no surprises here, so if you liked the TR formula up to this point it seems that you'll likely enjoy Shadow. I've tried not to spoil myself too much on reviews but Easy Allies gave it an 8.5 and the ACG guy gave it a buy, and I tend to find myself agreeing with their reviews most of the time. Can't wait until tomorrow night!

A real good way to put it yo. The story and voicework etc. are all good enough, long as things aren't outright bad and obnoxious it's a video game idk. Shoutouts to Shadow of the Collosus and Last Guardian that for how little story they really told in cutscenes and all were the only game stories that hit me. I think Brothers was on track for it too cause I'm a little bro but I never got back around to playing very far in.

I love and play a lot of games and also I want games to be under constant critical scrutiny and I want to hear from people with different perspectives to talk about them and point out things I’d never notice. Over time I want games to get better and that means technical and cultural improvements. I don’t need everyone else to like the things I like and I don’t need to like everything about the things I like.

This kind of criticism can only enrich the game. It doesn’t hurt anyone by existing and it pushes the creators (if they care) to do better.

This is a pretty decent version of the new Tomb Raider games. Graphics are the best they’ve been, and there’s pretty much more of all the stuff the games have become known for. Controls are a little floaty, but not cripplingly so.

So, majority of the reviews are pretty spot on. The last two games have had the same problems with regard to narrative, so if that hasn’t bothered you before then you’ll probably like this one just fine!
