Is there a good place to go to determine how a House rep stacks up? I’ve toyed with running for office (card carrying regular donating DSA member) but haven’t been able to sit down and determine if my dem House rep is neutral or poor or worse. He’s basically guaranteed winning just for running and he’s been in for ages, but he seems to keep his head down. Maybe instead I’ll do state legislative (California) because I don’t want to fly to DC.

Voting history, bills authored or cosponsored. It would require research, but committee appointments and what they accomplished or failed to accomplish while on committee are telling. How outspoken they were, how much of a lightning rod or whip they were could also be taken into consideration, but interpretations will be subjective and it's real hard, for example, to tell how what the actual political efficacy of constantly tweeting about poo poo is. Brokering deals, bargaining and cajoling for votes is also a big metric, but there isn't exactly much public record of it.

Come back here when you've identified at least one candidate at the town/city level, one at the state level, and one candidate at the federal (so like congress) level that you support.

This one's a hell of a long shot, but Shahid Buttar is running to unseat Nancy Pelosi. https://shahidforchange.us His chances aren't good, but even him getting the exposure is a net positive. People need to see that things don't have to be this way.

It may not be too difficult to get enough votes to keep the Republican dumpster-fire candidate (whomever decides to run is probably going to be) for people doing what they think are subtle protest votes. But if he comes out with a sizable number in the primary and it's between him and Pelosi in the final, it's certainly not impossible. Edit: EB, I'd probably add some vague score card for those doing phone banking or canvassing duties as being equal or simply different than pure monetary donations and that in the post-elections round-up can "win" over someone dumping $5k on "Not Cruz."

Good point. I was looking for a way to articulate that while there's obviously a ton of value in people who have the means to donate hundreds or thousands of dollars to do so, and we should cheer those people on, this is also not supposed to be a competition between goons who have disposable income and goons who don't. Some goons can afford to drop $1k at a time on a cause they consider worthy and many goons can't spend $50 without having to rejigger their monthly budget or spend less at the supermarket. This is part of why I've hesitated to just implement a straightforward points system, and why I'm hoping the focus stays more communal and celebratory than competitive. My thought is that we can have a little vote on Challenge MVPs or whatever at the end of September and highlight people who go above and beyond, and they could maybe name their award (upgrade, choosing the next challenge focus, etc), but I think poo poo like gangtags should be for all participants.

Electric Bugaloo posted:The inaugural GOONPAC Challenge is up Well poo poo, I guess since I actually inspired this with my bitter-whine post in the USPOL thread I might as well post here. I'm not the most politically savvy fellow but as a Texan I really feel that the true way to make Texas go blue is to take a crowbar or hammer and pry off or smash every local level GOP politician we can. Beto's coat-tails kinda proved this as people voting for him also voted down-ballot for Democratic or DSA people. Vote for governor and such but what you really need to turn Texas Blue is to focus on the state congress on down. And even if we lose here in Texas, every dollar we spend, every hour of GOTV that the GOP spends money on to counter is less money for the national GOP to spend defending weaker races nationwide. If we can't turn Texas blue, we should turn it into a moneypit sucking at the GOP's warchest.

Let's make some entrenched town-level GOP fixture scared when this year's challenger suddenly has a budget to draw from. Also: A chat I had today reminded me of how grotesque the Alabama/Georgia/Missouri abortion ban pushes were, and are, and I got mad all over again. I'd like to make a permanent section highlighting every single motherfucker that voted for one of these bans, who their challenger is if they have one, and links to donate to the challengers' campaigns. I want to make it easy for people to drop into the thread, choose a link, and fire off a donation when they feel pissed. Thoughts?

If so, I can introduce you to the good activists at Progressive Democrats of America here, who in turn can broaden your connection to the whole left-side political action in the valley. For now, one of the most important races you can support in this state is Mark Kelly's bid for Senate. Arizona is one of the three must-win senate seats this year for Democrats, and Kelly is about a 50/50 bet against the (appointed) Republican Incumbent Martha McSally at the moment. Arizona is going to feature what is likely to be the most competitive senate race in the country for 2020. The house and local state races most relevant to you depends on where in the state you live, but if you want to reach out I would be happy to point you to where your energy and time could be put to good use. Alternatively, Houston DSA and the Harris County Dem Party could always use bodies to help in their efforts. HCDP has an HQ in the 5th Ward that you can walk into and say I'm here to help and DSA has a monthly meeting where you can go and say you're there to help.
