What causes them to spread and become established in a new variant is A.) sufficient selective pressure for these mutations and B.) a permissive environment with sustained Rt > 1 that allows a newcomer to outcompete the existing variants long enough to establish dominance. We have both of those.

At the current Rt of ~1.6 in many places, such a hypothetical immune escape variant would be expected to become a significant problem after about 20 or so generations, or 2-4 months after delta became established in an area with lots of vaccinated people.

With delta having become widespread in the US during the June-July timeframe, that would be right around Thanksgiving.

I'm sorry thread. I've been trying to be a voice of reason here. I've tried to be calming and share my (small amount of) expertise as an epidemiologist, but it's pretty clear to me now that this is not a thread where my perspective is valuable. I'm out. I hope everyone stays safe and healthy.
