Forgot to post about this last week, but I got to go see Monkey Man in theaters and it was killer. Absolutely worth a look if you dig revenge flicks a la Oldboy (the 2003 Korean original) or John Wick.

Men at Work. Everything about this movie is stupid, and the actors know it so it works. Keith David is the MVP

Gotta love a movie that wears its inspiration on its sleeve, but uses it to make something new and interesting. I thought it was a pretty amazing directorial debut. Patel makes a number of big, interesting creative choices that don't necessarily all work, but I respect the hell out of him for swinging for the fences. The camerawork is one of them - (spoiler'd just in case someone cares) all of the shots in the first act are super tight, (presumably) representing the character's narrow hyperfocus, and widens out in the back half of the film as his skill and perspective grows. I'm not sure it fully works (it makes the action hard to follow in several scenes, especially the mediocre car chase), but drat, what a cool creative choice to commit to.

Bringing Out the Dead. Not Scorsese's best, but still a decent movie with good acting.

The Pacific For some reason I never got around to watching this series, so I finally watched it. I thought it was good but inconsistent. Some incredible scenes tho. My favorite was probably Snafu stopping Sledge from carving a gold tooth out of a dead Japanese soldier. Like he was try to save the last bit of humanity left in Sledge, even if he himself was already too far gone The last 2 episodes were easily the high water mark of the series, really well done. 8/10

I haven't watched The Pacific in years, but this scene always stuck with me. I don't remember much else about the show other than the poor guy who didn't want to sell war bonds anymore, wanted to get back into fighting, and got sent to Iwo Jima.

Watched the new Garfield movie, was pretty cute and had a surprising amount of slapstick. Not bad, but it is weird seeing Garfield just constantly seeing Odie as an ally instead of a nuisance.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. I would like to read the history on the making of this one and what influenced Miller's decisions. It's not drastically different from the other Mads, but the musical score and everything beyond Thunderdome makes it seem like Indiana Jones meets the Goonies. It seems like the type of movie where the studio had a different idea on how to market it and was forcing a lot of changes, but I don't think that's the case. And I wonder if they had one of the kids say gently caress just to get it up to a PG-13 rating. It's still a pretty good movie, and you should watch it if you enjoy the others.

Watched The Brand New Testament the other night - it was pretty good! Weird, charming Belgian surreal comedy. Currently doing a John Wick marathon with some buds that somehow haven't seen any of them. The first movie is so goddamn good.

After roughly 9 hours of John Wick, I can safely say the first one is the best of the lot, but we all already knew that lol. Some quick additional thoughts... 2 is better than I remember (the Rome sequence is really fun), but probably the low point of I had to pick one. 3 has some excellent action sequences and a fun Halle Berry performance, but really gets up it's own rear end with the lore. 4 is much too long and feels weirdly inconsistent, but has a couple of truly outstanding set pieces (Osaka is cool and the top-down dragon's breath scene still whips).
