Teddybear posted:So this'll be a fun story this weekend, possibly: This brings up a difference in voting systems. In Finland we used to do presidential elections through electorate until 1994 when we switched to direct voting (1988 was a mix, there was both a direct vote in case one candidate got 50% of votes, and elector vote for the second round). What was different was that the 300 electors were actually the ones the people voted for. Under that system this wouldn't have worked. While they were free to vote as they liked (and last minute changes did happen) an elector who before the big day declared that he actually didn't want to support his party's candidate would likely have been left without votes. But then you couldn't directly apply that system to a First Past The Post country, Finland uses the D'Hondt proportional method.

Bloops Crusts posted:Why is Clinton spending vital hours campaigning in Michigan if it really is so laughable? Michigan has 14 House of Representatives seats up for grabs, and a state house that the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee wants to flip. There's no early voting; so at this late date her thumb on the scale counts more than elsewhere.

BigRed0427 posted:Can someone explain to me what Random Drift and Bayesin means? I tried to read the explanation on the site and cant understand it. - random drift is modeling a process as brownian motion. A particle randomly drifts, attracted by external forces. For PEC/Sam Wang, the particle represents the vote margin, and when it's drifted from the current poll median to Nov 8th, its location is one prediction for the election margin. You do that a few thousand times and it's a good estimate of a stochastic process. - Bayes, in this case, means Sam Wang adding an expectation of where the particle should arrive, based on the race so far (previous, older polls). So Sam is saying: the particle/margin is probably going to drift towards the mean of previous, older polls. Does that make sense?

I've gotten seven mailers from my shitawful Tortilla Coast-rear end congressman in the past two days trying to run a smear campaign against his opponent. Considering I'm used to getting a single one like a week before voting day that's just "Congressman Garrett hates taxes; loves America!" I'm really hoping he's deep in hot water. I don't really care much about the Dem running for the seat, I just loving hate Scott Garrett's bullshit. Militree posted:Does anyone have any info on early voting in New Jersey? That map that gets posted said it's available, but all I can research says no excuse absentee ballot only, and I don't have enough time to get that in. Yeah sorry, it's just the absentee ballot there. There's a form you can fill out with your county clerk to have them automatically mailed to you for future elections though, you might need to call them to get it. You could technically go in to your county clerk's office on Monday before 3 PM and get an absentee ballot, fill it out on the spot, then hand it in. But there'd be little point to that. Depending on county you can also do this on Saturday or Sunday during their business hours. You can't really mail one of those ballots you'd get in person though, as it has to be received in office by the time the regular polls close to be valid.

The general problem of accounting for locked-in votes remains a problem in 538's model, though, AFAICT.

CT's state elections are in a weird position I think. No one likes Governor Malloy because he's cut tons of State employees across the board to balance the budget. I'm guessing taxes could go up if that doesn't work. One of the Dems running for state House here is running to oppose his cuts. Honestly I haven't payed a lot of attention to state politics. Anyone else from CT more int he know.
