There were a lot of things they could have explored in those comics even just based on snippets from interviews and notes about the characters that don't get explicitly stated in the movie, like Furiosa has the opportunity to become a respected imperator because her being sterile makes her "not actually female" in Joe's hyper masculine heavy metal album cover society, but because she is female she still has to fight and deliver twice as hard to get recognized, so like the history woman says at the beginning of the movie someone rising up to push back is an inescapable inevitable result of how Joe is running things. Her femininity is only acknowledged in terms of "useless because she can't breed kids" while her achievements are all "masculine," which is why there's room in Joe's world for a "female imperator" and "female war boys" but never for an "imperatrix" or "war girl." Or how the oxygen Rictus/some other people in Joe's inner circle are using isn't for disease purposes, but bullshit show off measure to display how the royal family gets to breathe the "good" air. The way Joe has an unhealthy figure and is heavily deformed,* but the bullshit facade he puts on every day matches with how the war boys paint themselves up and how they're unknowingly worshiping a pure bullshit man. There's just a ton of cool touches to the movie's story that could have been fleshed out instead of them fleshing out stuff in the comics that is already super obvious in the movies. *The way we never actually see his whole face in the movie is incredible, when his mask is removed there's no identity under it because his face is ripped off with it, he's nothing without his propaganda and the mythology he built around himself, that's awesome. SUPERMAN'S GAL PAL posted:Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me how the script implies Joe is bi/gay and vilifies him for this reason, as opposed to being, ya know, a goddamn rapist. I don't recall the dialogue vilifying him for it. I remember that the Wives used "Joe paints us up with white makeup because he really wants to gently caress his War Boys" as a way to make fun of him behind his back.

I would've liked a comic about his lieutenants, who each had a lot of potential. I was disappointed that while the video game takes place partly in Gastown the People Eater isn't even really mentioned. I know Joe's back story briefly mentions them but that's it. The People Eater was the only one that cared about how much guzzoline was being wasted. As gross and decadent as he was, it seemed like he was the only one thinking about the long term impacts . In both the regular and deleted scenes he also seemed extremely reluctant compared to the Bullet Farmer who wanted to go all Judge Dredd on Furiosa. A comic about Joe having to balance out these forces would've been pretty cool.

Comics should be done like the movies. Standalone plots. Possibly pull in different artists/writers for each book to drive it home.

I thought they brought that up to imply he was raping the warboys along with the women, not making him bad because he was gay, but worse because he was an equal opportunity rapist.

In A Moveable Feast Hemingway mentions carrying a knife as a young man for this specific reason. For some reason this doesn't come up so much in discussion of the young adulthood of, say, Indiana Jones, though.

I think you're reading a little too much into it. I read it as the girls just being upset at their rapist (because of loving course they are) and privately finding ways to make fun of him. You'd have to read pretty deep into it to also say "Yeah, Joe rapes the War Boys".

Sure hope waiting to buy Fury Road on blu-ray until a "definitive edition" of sorts comes out ends up paying off. I've only seen the movie once back when it was in theaters and I really want to watch it again!

Yeah, I was holding out to buy whichever version may end up having a B&W option, but I saw it on sale for 10 bucks so I grabbed it anyway. I'll just give that one away when a better option comes out.

Black and white version adds nothing to the movie, unlike The Mist which had the same treatment. In fact, after I saw a fan-made black and white version, seeing the super vivid and well done colors in the normal version that I had taken for granted before blew me away (again).

I heard the Black and Chrome version has no dialog. If so, was it cut to remove all the scenes of people talking or is it like an old school silent movie? It sounds like it has no sound at all, beyond a musical score, but I'm not finding a lot of actual information on it.

The fan made one removes the vocals, not the scenes, it amps up the background music too. It makes for a really great effect.

This is a vintage making of featurette that was included with the widescreen VHS and I haven't seen it on any of the other releases. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmiXUrbbfl8 Somehow the simpler stunts are more impressive to me, given what they had to work with.

I'm watching it now on Google Play. Is appears to be simply a black and white version of the movie. To my untrained eyes it doesn't look much different than the black and chrome fan edit. As far as I can tell, all the dialogue is retained.

If you have a copy that'll play in VLC: In VLC open Effects and Filters (Ctrl+E), on the Video effects tab, Basic section: slide down the saturation. It's really fun to try various films this way.

The version linked a couple of posts up is clearly more than simple desaturation. The contrast is bumped up and they passed the movie through a red or orange filter to make things that were those colors pop more in the bw version.
