Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly accused France of “neo-colonialism” and has actively supported independence movements and other countries’ claims over French territories across the world, including the island of Mayotte and New Caledonia.
Azerbaijan has even founded the Baku Initiative Group, bringing together 14 political movements across the former French Empire in the name of decolonization. The group issued a statement Thursday in which they accused Paris of “infringing upon the Kanak people’s right to self-determination by expanding the electorate to keep them a minority in their own homeland.”
However, according to Philippe Gomes, former president of the government of New Caledonia, Azerbaijan is actively funding the pro-independence Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front.

“Azerbaijan created the Baku group that funds separatists in all overseas French regions,” said Gomes, who has tried to quell calls for the islands to break from Paris. “Recent trips to Paris by independence activists were funded by Baku. It is clear and obvious that Azerbaijan is contributing in support the request for independence, which can be called foreign interference,” Gomes said.

Also the position of the Chinese government has been and continues to be that welfare payments make people lazy and unwilling to work.

No idea if that will change any time soon, but in general you do build welfare by getting as much people into productive labour as possible and directing all that labour towards ends that increase the standard of living.

wasn’t that also the Soviet perspective on welfare, which is why they would create make work jobs that nevertheless had the full suite of benefits that people would get slotted into as their social safety net? I remember reading that Belarus still has a much smaller version of that, being one of the few post Soviet countries not to fully dismantle their welfare state

Makes sense with the stereotype of digging and filling ditches or whatever. It means you don't end up with a stigmatised underclass and they can be transferred to necessary jobs as a reserve workforce.

The US just made Mexico raise tariff on a bunch of China import categories, so it's not really a "loop hole" like the China haters think.

And if things are made in Mexico by Mexican labors according to the Mexican labor standards, it should freely enter the US or Canadian market as NAFTA intended.

The US can still pass more discriminatory laws that only give subsidies to US only batteries anyway, it's not like the US hasn't done it before or the Chinese EV makers don't know this.

I humbly offer my services as forum inquisitor. There is absolutely no way I would abuse this power in any way.

To be exact, New Caledonia is pretty unique among French overseas possessions in that it is (or was, I guess) engaged in a long-term process of decolonization. It is still categorized by the UN as a non-autonomous territory in need of decolonization, which is not the case of the French Antilles or Guyana.

Back in the 80's, following decades of policies of outright settlement colonization, the indigenous Kanak (around 40% of the total population) rose up. There was a massacre in 1988 following which peace talks took place. The French Constitution was amended and three self-determination referenda were programmed to take place, with the last one no later than 2022. In 1998, the electoral body for these referenda was frozen: only people who were New Caledonian citizens by that date or their descendants were allowed to vote.

So the referenda took place. The first one, in 2016, was rejected with 58% against. The second one, in 2018, was rejected with 53% against. By 2020, the settler elite was making GBS threads itself with fear, expecting to lose the final referendum, which was set to take place in 2021. Then Covid came by and killed a significant fraction of the population in 2021. The Kanak requested a year-long mourning period and a delaying of the final referendum. This was denied. So they boycotted the referendum, which was therefore rejected with 97% against.

Complicating matters are the fact that Macron named a hardline Caldoche settler as minister, and that these past few years the New Caledonian Question was handled by the minister of the Interior (noted rapist and hard right-winger Gérald Darmanin) instead of the Prime Minister. And last week, they introduced a bill aiming to unfreeze the electoral body for local elections, thus undoing what little had been done in the decolonization process. This was the spark that led to the current uprising and the constitution of settler militias. So far three Kanak have been killed, as well as two gendarmes (one of them died of an accidental gun discharge by a colleague).

All this to say that the Kanak independantists don't need Russian or Azerbaijani whispers in their ears to recognize the colonial situation they're being subjected to.

China Attempts to End Property Crisis With Broad Rescue Package

quote:

Xi Jinping’s government announced its most forceful attempt yet to rescue the beleaguered Chinese property market, relaxing mortgage rules and urging local governments to buy unsold homes as authorities become increasingly concerned about the sector’s drag on economic growth.

The support package also includes lower down-payment requirements for homebuyers and 300 billion ($42 billion) of central bank funding to help government-backed firms buy excess inventory from developers. Those properties would then be converted into affordable housing.

I would love to learn more about housing construction in China. From the little I have gathered, they seem to have stark regional differences where some places have state-owned construction and others (as you get closer to the economic zones it seems) get increasingly mixed-market. What makes it so curious to me is that with the way real estate works, my guess would be that a overproduction crisis mediated by state-owned firms would allow the CCP to swoop in and absorb the private sector in chunks, but I am not sure on the returns it already provides now to keep from just seizing it outright instead of financing like that

The real estate market is being reformed. But I haven't read anything to indicate how big of a change it will be.

Also SCMP is pay walled, so I don't know what it says in the article.

And I am talking about the local governments moving away from relying land sale as their primary income, not the central government buying empty apartments and actively distribute them.
