Fission comes from dead star guts. Fusion is just replicating the stellar process using magnets instead of mass.

Second one is cleaning the dust off the panels. There is a field south of Las Vegas. I forget the town's name but it's one of the southern towns in Fallout4. It's actually a reflection matrix that uses mirrors to target a water tower and use the super heated water to run turbines. I think several big name companies and even celebrities got in on it. It works, but has at best only achieved about 80% of what it was expected to produce; usually less. The problem is dust from the desert and pollution from Vegas severely compromise its capabilities. The facility needs full time crews cleaning the field to keep the reflectors operating as best as possible. The same is true for solar electric; gotta keep the dirt off the panels.

We have coatings for this now. IIRC, KAUST paid for some people to make it. TiO2 and some other stuff in the anatase form keeps it relatively clean without adding water.

Heck yeah sundials worked great then we had wristwatches that charged simply by having a cheeky tug (or even just idunno walking around) through gyrismos. Now smartwatches? Oh lol uhm they got fastcharge maybe? There used to be no charge man.

Somewhat seriously, now they come out with ultra fission eternal power generating, just like that huh? Now? Maintenance on the old coal power plant and some gas lines sabotaged and now they just HAPPEN to have figured out forever power mmmhm.

I had a professor that worked at Lawrence Livermore in the '60s and '70s. He worked on the early fusion research and materials development. I'm sure its been upgraded and changed since his day, but he described the laser cannons to us.

Imagine a laser cannon the size of your living room; perhaps your whole house. Now take 6 of those and target them onto a single microscopic point. It takes a couple of hours to charge them all up, and even then there will be a huge pull on the local electric grid when fired. They had to fire at 2 AM to avoid causing a blackout. Even then though, it caused brown-outs on occasion.

The achievement in successful fusion is monumental. Its like inventing the wheel, penacillan, TV, walking on the moon, etc. It just takes a poo poo-ton of energy, and would need to be done many times per day to reap the benefits and make it a viable source of power for society. But they did proof of concept. We'll probably not see it in our lifetime, but after 100 years of refining the tech, it'll be one of the new and greatest advancements of human kind.

Also, on the advice of my professor, "You do not want to live anywhere near that lab."

i've been watching a few videos about wind and solar power and now i'm starting to get pissed off that these things aren't having all the money thrown at them as fast as possible to completely get rid of fossil fuels except as an emergency resource because all i'm hearing is there's enough wind and solar potential to fill the world's energy needs many times over if we'd get our poo poo together

like a week ago my attitude on climate change was eh, probably gonna be horrendous but what're you gonna do. now it seems like the problem is purely political. i'm probably being just as simplistic on the other side of it now.

is there a good, short book which covers this sort of stuff written in the last few years i could read to get a better idea of what the hold up is and what the potential actually is?

the roof on my place is oriented E/W so the only place I could reasonably explore this stuff was my shed, which had space for 4 panels so I've got 1.6KW of capacity out there. I think it maxes out around 1.4KW because it's not a tracking mount or anything.
It's pretty cool but because I'm in the PNW there are days so cloudy that I get 5-10% of the rated output. I put this thing together myself which I don't necessarily recommend to anyone but I have DIY brainworms so I can answer questions about it if you like. I have a battery system that probably tops out around 4.5 KWh stored, I might upgrade it to ~16 but the issue is there's no climate control out there so to ensure acceptable performance I would need to build it an insulated enclosure. If I do that well enough hopefully the charge/discharge cycles generate enough heat to keep it warm anyway but I might have to rig up a little control system with a heating resistor and a fan to keep it >10C and <40C.
My original motivation was to explore offgrid potential out in the sticks, but given the above about cloudy days you need to have a really significant battery system if you're not going to cut back on your electricity usage, which I don't want to do, and especially if you're using electricity for heat.

In conclusion insulate your homes. Good night!

I live in an apartment so I can't steal the sun's light from the structure, but the roof is really well oriented for solar. I wrote the township since these complexes are like 30% of the housing structures here.

Based on the rest of your post, I assume that you've already run the numbers on this, but for anyone else; I've seen people run two strings of PV facing E and W, then tie that into a single inverter.

Someone in the same city as me has 3 or 3.5 KW of production arranged this way, and he produces basically as much as I do with 5 KW facing NE, with the plus side that he makes more of his energy in the critical morning and evening periods and comparatively less in the useless midday period.

Yeah, but I don't like voluntarily having a 50% of max duty cycle on the panels. If you have a good battery system (or grid tie, which I don't) to average it out, generation at noon isn't wasted.
