Season two will almost certainly be good, regardless of yuri. However, if they want me to believe that Kumiko is interested in what's-his-face after how their relationship was presented in the first season, they're going to have to really work at it. She never once reacted positively to him showing up. He was always framed as an intruder in the scene, and she always made noises of disgust.

Insurrectionist posted:

Oguro: After episode 8 huh? It’s not yuri, but they’re tied together with a red string so…
Yamada: So they’re tied. (laughs)
Oguro: When you drew them, you felt they’d understand as the story progressed.
Yamada: Of course. Since it’s something you don’t see in the first half, it might appear to be something suggestive in the ending with no real meaning.
Oguro: Did you possibly think that it could be seen as yuri and playing to the viewers with no relationship to the main story?
Yamada: I thought it might, but I felt “Well, that’s okay. They’ll understand later.” (laughs)

"I thought it might" is such bullshit. Everything about their interactions was deliberately presented romantically. They knew what they were doing, and they're assholes if they try to pin blame for expectations on their viewers.

Its okay, episode 8 was more romantic than any actual animated romance in forever even though apparently it wasn't supposed to be at all, so if they actually tried to do romance it'd probably end up as generic stuttery blushing anyway. Once you convince yourself of this there will be no more sadness.

I don't think they're being assholes, they're just being particularly coy in an environment where departing in such a huge way from the source material can get you in trouble with fans.

I'm sure that part of the arc for season 2 will be Kumiko settling for this bland moron guy but I trust Kyoani to handle it well.

Seriously. There's something about Shuichi that just irritates the poo poo out of the audience. There is something about the way he is framed by the camera. He never starts off as the focus of the shots, and instead always slides into frame from off-screen, so it always feels like he's intruding on the Kumiko's and the audience's train of thought.

Personality wise, he has none. We have absolutely no idea what's going through his head, we only know him through Kumiko, and from that she can barely put up with the guy.

Kyoani is capable of making really hot guys. Oreki was hot, the Frees were hot, and here Gotou and Taki are hot. With Shuichi, Kyoani pulled out all the stops to make him the antithesis of hot.

And instead, Kousaka sets Kumiko's and the audience's hearts a-flutter.

I don't get why Kumiko would end up with the guy. She's never shown any interest in boys. I thought that scene in the beginning made it pretty obvious, where the other girls are gushing over how cute their teacher is and she's like "really?" Like she probably won't kiss Reina, but it's not like a relationship has to happen.

I listened to the character songs today for the first time since the previews came out. They're alright. I like that they feature the girls' instruments, and I like the purely instrumental tracks that mostly just sound like chamber music. An unusual choice for character song CDs, but one that makes sense.

I went to go see the recap movie today in Kyoto. Reposting something I posted elsewhere:

- As you might expect, it was a recap movie, so there was very little new footage. Only four things stood out to me as new: Kumiko and Reina's middle school band performing at the competition before the results (they're actually really good, playing the Infernal Gallop from Orepheus in the Underworld, as in Kumiko's flashback in Episode 12), an extended sequence at the Marching Band section at SunFes mainly to demonstrate how much better the band had gotten, an additional scene with Yuko (ribbons trumpet girl) and a second-year playing clarinet that was inserted during the audition drama just before she tries to convince Reina to take a fall, and the credits were different with a lot of stills that were basically candid shots from the band post-competition. Surprisingly I don't think the finale concert had new footage, at least not that I can tell, since they basically used the whole of both pieces anyway.

- Audio additions are mainly just Reina narrating together bits, montage-style. They also redid the audio for the bridge running scene, though I don't think it was for the better - it sounded way more nasally and sniffly, diluting the raw emotion of the scene, imho.

- Obviously there were a lot of cuts for time, but there were two cuts (or changes) in particular I thought were interesting: In the re-audition, nobody except for Kumiko and Yoko clap for Reina/Kaori. Also, they cut Shunichi's fistbump with Kumiko entirely, even though they keep both the hair-tying with Reina and the fist-bump with Natsuki.

- Speaking of cuts, as is probably standard, the pacing is abysmal. This is nobody's ideal first experience of Eupho, because as it stands it's just way too fast - and band drama has so many players, it's near impossible to get a grasp on anybody. Dramatic moments are treated mostly right, and it's an okay job of compressing the whole cour into a 104 minute film, but it's just way too goddamn fast.

- There was a few things I noticed on this watch I didn't notice initially. Kumiko's friend from middle school who went to Rikka (the 'rival', better school) is the girl who was sitting next to her in the prologue who runs out of the hall. Somehow, I missed Midori and Kumiko (the band vets) sharing a look when the Concert Band just does their tuning notes - they're already so disappointed in the band, while Hazuki is enthralled!

- Finally, I actually went to go see a Sound! Eupho concert a few weeks back, and the hall they played at is actually the hall Kitauji rents out to do the re-audition in and get a feel for hall acoustics. I also saw the band from the school which Rikka is based off. Their marching band was amazing.

- The credits song is like the wind ensemble arrangement of the OP with lyrics by TRUE. It's real good.

I also dropped by the KyoAni shop on the way up and grabbed a Print Set 2, some Reina and Kousaka keychains, and a creator messagebook.

Were you in Uji as well as Kyoto? I think that's the name of the city where Eupho was set. If so, that's so cool! My SO is currently overseas teaching and was just there yesterday! Apparently the place is decked out in Eupho stuff and you can do a walking tour of the city to visit locations from the show to get stamps and win a folder. ((They were out. D:)) I think the KyoAni store is on their itinerary for tomorrow so hopefully I'll be receiving swag as well. :D

the problem w/ Euphonium as a solo instrument for me is, if you've ever seen it in a concert hall, the attack is so mellow and so much of the sound is likewise that a lot of the nuance really gets lost in the hall.

now a euph choir, that's one of the most beautiful sounds in the world to me.

anyway those are my earnest euphonium opinions for today
