I heard it was actually coffee in the originals in some cases. And Phoenix Wright drinking grape juice in Apollo Justice. Not sure if that was taking the piss or not. Also of course Soda Popinsky. That said, a noir detective being addicted to coffee feels like it makes complete sense anyway. Come to think of it, from what little of the genre I know (almost entirely from parodies, like everyone else) a noir detective lives almost entirely on whiskey, coffee and cigarettes.
