Holy Christ this show is still amazing. I’m glad Mob is developing as a person and I’m scared at what’s coming given the light tone of these first two episodes.

It's good to see more Mob fights, and Mob fights with actual plot significance even if they're still curb stomps ("Mob exerting his will over others" as character development and "Mob still can't read the room" as a power he really would rather not have)

I still haven't watched all of the first season since the actual writing of Mob never grabbed me. What a great adaptation though regardless; you can tell Bones is legit having fun with it

I'm a little bothered by the translation choice of "I wonder if anyone will yell at me" vs "I wonder if anyone could/would stop me" I remember the manga uses, I don't think the former sells Mob questioning the teetering balance of his life.

Still, I love this slow burn of the first three episodes, and I think they kinda test whether you'll pick up what Mob's putting down, the constantly building drama that eventually has to be released

Hey kids! Do you want to be as AKOOL as me?
I also thought that translation was really weird. It almost feels like a punchline.

"If I go crazy one day and start killing people, I wonder if anybody will tell me that that is a no-no and put me in time out?"

Other than that, I loved how the scene with the family of spirits was handled.

If I hadn't read here that there was a translation discrepancy then I would have thought the line was supposed to be funny.

It might have been meant to be a joke! I just remember the manga giving me a much starker impression of Mob considering his own power and the ethical use of it and I liked that

Nephthys

I'm pretty sure it's a fairly big translation error. Mob seriously thinking 'If I did something bad, could anyone actually stop me?' is a real holy poo poo moment and the culmination for all the build-up seen in this episode. Mob is being totally serious in the questions he's been asking, which is why Reigen realised him half-assing stuff can't cut it anymore, you're supposed to take it seriously too.

Fangz

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
I think it has a different meaning but I don't know if one or the other is correct. From the way the episode is structured, I'd kinda argue the CR version makes more sense. His issue is not that the others don't have the power to stop him, his issue is that he's morally adrift, he's worried that if he was evil, the people around him wouldn't even recognise it. Like if he nuked the ghost family, Reigen wouldn't even know, only Dimple would and Dimple is hardly a great judge. Ethically he thinks there is a big deal about using his power against the bullies, but all the people on his side think he should just defend himself. The moral certainty around him is being broken down, and no one seems to be an authority any more.

The point is not that he fears he would/could not be stopped, he's validating Reigen's thought, that because he occupies such a different world, he's being relied upon to make moral judgements on his own about things no one else can understand, and that's an awful lot of pressure knowing that even if he was evil, he would not even be yelled at, let alone stopped.

Maybe someone who actually knows Japanese might have a different point of view.

Okay yeah here's the unofficial translation

and I don't think that it really disagrees with this interpretation:

Mob's realizing that he can really only rely on his own moral compass, and if he ever does stray from it, he's terrified that no one would be able to know or stop him from going any further, much less in an actual physical encounter.

Reigen telling Mob to just follow his feeling is a great sentiment, his time with Emi taught him that same thing, but if his feelings are ever "wrong", the consequences could be terrible

These episodes are getting heavier and heavier. Whatever you're all bouncing in your seats for, I don't want any part of it...except I do, because Mob Psycho 100 is fantastic and I don't want to miss a single second.

WRT the translation talk: I did laugh out loud at Mob saying "Will anybody yell at me," though I got the gist of him worrying about whether or not anybody could keep him in line if he flew off the handle. I do agree that "Will anybody be able to stop me" serves the same purpose in a less incongruous manner.

Fangz

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
Again, I think the 'will anyone be able to stop me' invites the interpretation that it's about power - as opposed to *moral authority*. In that translation, 'will there be somebody to stop me' is closer to the CR version in intent, I think, which is a bit amusing because it's being misremembered.

EDIT: Having talked to someone who knows Japanese, they think the CR sub is reasonably accurate.

quote:

them:I think it's about right?
them: yell?
them: I mean, that's vague but essentially he's asking if someone will reprimand him if he does lose control
me: so it is reprimand as opposed to 'stop'?
them: or punish
them: the literal translation is "will someone take any action against me for it?"
them: Regardless, if you want my opinion as a working and fluent translator, then I think the implied connotation from the Japanese is "will someone be there to stand up agianst me?"

quote:

Italics is CR subs, Bold are my translations:
もしボクが誰かを呪いたくなったら
If I ever end up wanting to curse someone...
If I ever end up wanting to curse someone... (No change)
もしボクが犯罪に力を利用したら
If I ever end up using my powers for evil...
If I ever end up using my powers to commit crimes...
もしボクが霊じゃなく人を退治したいなんて考えてしまったら
If I ever end up wanting to eradicate people rather than spirits ...
If I ever end up thinking I want to eradicate people instead of spirits...
誰かがボクを懲らしめてくれるのかな?
I wonder if anyone will yell at me for it.
will someone stand up against me?

Yeah, I think "will anyone yell at me?" is a pretty accurate thought pattern for a middle school kid concerned with morality. I think it carries a more clear depiction of Mob's train of thought, because he's a kid.

I get manga readers are probably just jarred by a significantly different translation but I think the line as given by the CR subs has good punch, in part because it's framed "childishly".

It's a reminder that Mob isn't some Superman-style alien, he's a confused kid who's spent a really long time suppressing his emotions and opinions and is now coming to terms with the fact that he doesn't agree with the people who he normally leaned on, and wondering if he's "right" to disagree with them or not.

Anime only person here. Mob's line at the end felt really significant to me. Not jokey at all. I just wanted to give him a hug. He's such a good boy but he has to deal with some serious poo poo.

I lost it at all his friends helping out with his bully though. Especially the body improvement club. They're such fantastic friends.

Each individual boy* in Mob Psycho 100 would be the best boy in any other series easily. So to be the best boy in Mob Psycho is to be the best boy to ever exist be it past, present or future.

And that best boy is Reigen Arataka.

* - not the villains.
