Hi, scientist chiming here. I've had a massive career change and have been working on psychoactive substances in the past several years.

In terms of current evidence on the mechanisms of action or even the therapeutic benefits of some of the substances mentioned above, I would like to echo those saying don't take advice from the interwebs.

CBD: so far nobody agrees what it does or even if it has any clinically relevant effects. There are preliminary results and ongoing studies, but with big limitations. Because CBD is legal and not considered a prescription product, there is zero financial incentive for the industry to fund proper research.

Microdosing hallucinogens or dissociatives: preliminary results are encouraging, but we have yet to show it's not due to the placebo effect. Mental health and disorders are still poorly understood so there are added difficulties identifying the mechanism of action, nevermind properly demonstrating efficacy. More research needed.

Cannabis & mental disorders : again echoing what's said above. We barely know what cannabinoids do over time. Sorry far we don't have controlled data on acute effects or on changes due to chronic exposure. Cannabis doesn't and won't cure everything. More data needed to know what dosage regimens won't have negative effects, and how useful it can be for a range of conditions. Anecdotal evidence suggests it can be a useful sedative/analgesic at low doses.

I wouldn't call anticonvulsants sodium channel blockers. Although some are, gabaergic drugs are more commonly prescribed. We still have a barbaric approach to treat a lot of these conditions. Sedatives for epilepsy, pain, anxiety, etc.

Anyway It never ceases to amaze me what people are willing to invest without knowing what it'll do to them. Growing up in a trashy rural community we knew better than to try so and so's moonshine, lest we wanted to go blind.

Please don't take advice from an internet rando. Not even me. Especially not me.

You forgot to mention that these studies typically take years to produce any kind of answers or results. So saying that X helps or cures Y is in fact not really helping (and may actually be harmful), so dont do it.

Alberta is such a loving joke of a place that it's a legit campaign strategy to use your pickup truck as your campaign set piece.

You see, I am like you, fellow people. You have a truck, and I have a truck. Trucks are manly, and good. Trucks run on gas and diesel, which are good, and manly, and make the jobs. The jobs are good. The oil jobs, like you have. Look at my truck. Look at your truck. Look at the oil. Things are good, and will get better. More trucks, more oil, more manly.

I honestly dont think there is anything you can say or do to convince them to change or to accept an alternative at this point. We are seeing the results of 40 years of Conservative brainwashing, turning oil and trucks into being the entire Alberta identity.

He always posts libertarian bullshit on Facebook, and periodically I will poke at the logical fallacies he is displaying. But with the Christchurch tragedy he has doubled down on that rhetoric and it is loving sickening. What frustrates me more is that our other sibling came out as gender-non-conforming about 4 years ago and he, his wife, and her family are the only ones of my relatives that will not do the easy part of using the requested pronouns.

What I honestly feel is the worst about this is that his 4 kids get to grow up with his bigotry, insensitivity, and hatred.

Peace through overwhelming determination
They're both bad. Also iirc we've talked about the reduce classroom size a few days ago itt. Also having a bad government in Ontario doesn't undermine the ability for Ontarians to look at other bad governments and call them bad. Hope this helps!

The governments in power aren't teams that totally represent each individual's opinion that they govern, and individuals aren't responsible for what their government is doing, so it isn't hypocritical to hold an opinion that is different from the Ontario provincial government. (Lefty people don't disappear under conservative governments, their interests just aren't represented.)

People are more concerned about how the Albertan provincial campaigning is going and how they're appealing to voters, which is totally fair. People can be concerned about a lot of things and it isn't Ontarians vs Albertans here.

Edmonton, the Peace Country, and Lethbridge are the NDP core, having won outright majorities in their ridings there last year.

They won most of Calgary last time around, but with the vote split out of action it seems like they'll lose most of the city.

Most definitely.

In addition, longer study periods add in more variables that cannot be controlled for, lose randomization, and become much more difficult to conduct (costs, follow-up, etc.). On top of that, an extremely large sample size would be needed to observe subtle effects occuring in ≤ 10% subjects.

Enter non-interventional studies, which are cost-effective and flexible, but introduce more bias and error into the data. And the measures have their own limitations (e.g diagnostic codes lacking specificity). I'm not even talking about P-hacking and statistical bullshit.

Discerning good data from bad data is fun! (It's not)
