His bit with the troopers in The Mandalorian was great and I am very confident that, even if the emphasis on jokes will feel somewhat out of place for Star Wars, it'll still be 100% more palatable than TLJ's collection of absolute groaners.

TLJ mostly ruled and the salt over it is delicious. It's got some major execution flaws, but the script is rock solid and it's a better actual "movie" than every other Star Wars flick save 1977. Luke was perfect. The Rey and Kylo stuff was really well-done. The only absolute mistake it made was doubling-down on putting the audience off-balance with the Holdo plot, and it needed a few more beats to establish Finn's ambivalence of fully embracing the Resistance.

There was a scene that very, very clearly established Finn's position as "fully left the First Order, but hasn't joined the Resistance"...and it got deleted. this too! For some loving reason!

imo, that movie's biggest mistake was splitting up Finn and Poe. I will defend a lot of stuff Rian Johnson did in TLJ because I honestly think his heart was in the right place for almost everything else in the movie but he tragically misunderstood Finn. The fact that he wrote a scene where Finn had to learn from another character that war is bad and war negatively affects children, you know, Finn, the child soldier was wack as gently caress.

And yeah the Holdo stuff was super clunky and I don't understand why but at least the hyperspace kamikaze ruled.

Also my Star Wars hot take is that Mandalorian was good. I liked Mandalorian.

Pacing. Definitely pacing. That scene should have been in though, I agree. They should have made it work.

I don't think the intention was that Finn discovered that war was bad, as much as discovering that he wouldn't be allowed to opt-out of the war and that even places that seem divorced from politics are built on the exploited backs of kids like him, and Benicio Del Toro's opportunist was to let him know that he can't change sides on a whim or fence-sit, he's got to commit.

The execution was horrible.

It would have been trite, but more effective to show like, Finn trying to integrate himself into the Casino Planet and "move on" from the war and use a simple visual motif like his ID tattoo on himself and the kids and/or have some snooty rich people act classist toward him. You know, just connect the dot a bit harder.

quote:

And yeah the Holdo stuff was super clunky and I don't understand why but at least the hyperspace kamikaze ruled.
It's another one of those things that works really well on paper and you can see the intention, but the execution doesn't work. So much of TLJ is gambling on short-term disappointment leading to long-term payoff and RJ is the kind-of writer who is really in-love with parallel storylines that hit on similar themes so it's a lot of immediate disappointment. I think the movie holds together but it's a rougher sit than it needs to be and not all of the payoffs work.

The most key stuff-- Luke, Kylo, Rey, Leia/Poe--works, but the rest really doesn't. Swing big, miss big, I guess. I can respect that a lot more than Rise of Skywalker.

And Luke was absolutely perfectly done. I get not liking where Luke ended up I don't think you were supposed to :ssh: but I never bought that it was a betrayal of his character or unbelievable.

To complete the baseball analogy, TFA is three solid doubles, TLJ is three massive swings that get you an ugly strikeout, a flyout and a home run into the next county and TRoS is somehow striking out on a bunt leading into a triple play.

The story in star wars should basically be a vehicle for space battles and lightsabre fights they've never been that cerebral, It's an action movie for kids. Every movie would be better if it was made a la john wick; absolute bare minimum story and 90% ILM special effects, John Williams music and sword fights. That's the problem I have with TLJ. The story's bland and doesn't make sense and it doesn't even pay off. I guess the hyperspace kamikaze was cool but that's about all I remember. 2/10
this would be completely true if the empire strikes back, in the form we understand it, had never been properly made. as it stands the 'essence' of star wars is potentially a lot more capacious. but that potential isn't often realized.

This isn't even opinion, it's just a straight-up fact. I'm not sure it dawns on most folks anymore but all 9 movies actually have pretty specific titles that they go by on a pretty strict basis for super-official-no-cute-marketing-bullshit stuff like national film registries and such.

I believe the exact titles for each movie in the series are:
  • Star Wars
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Return of the Jedi
  • Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
  • Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
  • Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Kylo being a raging school shooter kid cosplaying at fascist, and Phasma the quintessential stormtrooper turning out to be a sniveling coward who's all aesthetics, would both be good twists and true to real life fascists. In better movies.

The prequels should have been the first half-hour of RotS, that's it.

And I don't even like TLJ that much, but the series should have ended on it, the whole "spreading the force to everyone or whatever" is a great open ending that was probably better than Rise of Skywalker which I didn't even bother to see.

Absolutely.

Opinion: Putting Jabba on Tatooine in ROTJ makes Han and Greedo retroactively dumber.

Reasoning: If Jabba is based on come other planet it gives the movie a chance to show an new environment. It also means that when Han is hiding out, he's doing what any smart smuggler is doing by hiding on some unimportant hole in the wall planet until he can get the money to pay off Jabba. ("If there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from.") It also means that Greedo was pretty smart (and therefore dangerous) because he tracked Han to this small bar in Nowheresville.

BUT....

Since both are Tatooine, that means that Han is hiding down the street from Jabba. Think about it, if you owed a gangster in Philadelphia a huge debt that could get you killed would you hide down the street or would you find some podunk town in Arizona to hide until you had the money?

Conversely, Greedo is less of a dangerous killer and more the fall guy. Jabba takes Greedo aside and says "Greedo my boy, I want you go get my money from Han. He's down the street, there." (points) Greedo has the job handed to him on a plate and screws it up.

There is that scene from the Special Edition where Han literally talks with Jabba. I think it's just bad writing all around.

I lost to you once, monster. I shall not lose again! Die now, that our future can live!
IIRC the one thing you learn in the Han-Jabba scene that wasn’t in the Greedo scene is that Jabba still liked Han a lot and didn’t really want him dead, he just hired a chump like Greedo to send a message. This tells us Han really does have a legitimate shot at solving his problems if he just takes the reward money and runs instead of throwing in with the rebellion at the end of the movie, which is an addition I like.

It's just too bad that about 80% of the dialogue there is redundant with the Greedo scene

Darth Brooks
Jan 15, 2005

I do not wear this mask to protect me. I wear it to protect you from me.

The Han / Jabba scene was written first and George apparently realized it wasn't working so he rewrote it as Han / Greedo which is why there is so much repeated. The scene with Greedo had more going for it. It helped establish Han as a rouge who wasn't afraid to kill. It was an example of how dangerous that universe was and how much trouble Han was in.

The Jabba scene in the Special edition was just one more bloated, unnecessary bit of business infesting that version..
