The impression I’ve gotten is that the fanfic on RR is usually the stuff that isn’t hard targeted at specifically the group of people who have spent years reading fanfic for that story. It tends more towards being a story that happens to be set in a preexisting setting rather than something which expects you to know every little detail of the original work (and a bunch of fanon things too).

Some of the fanfics can do numbers. One of the Pokémon ones has over 12k followers.

I just read Volume One of “Reach Heaven Through Feng Shui Engineering, Drug Trade and Tax Evasion” and I think it's pretty good. It's seems to be going for Xianxia Competence Porn so it's a bit dry sometimes, but the writer seems clever enough to make it work so far.

I'm following this too, and it really is worth a shot if a slow but steady drip feed of cultivation shenanigans sounds like your thing. I really like the worldbuilding and the way it shapes the characters, particularly with regard to the MC. Her religion is spitting in the face of the heavens (or it would be if she had one) and it owns.

I do worry that the way the author has set up the heaven vs mortal cultivators divide won't make sense or will have a weak sauce explanation later, but until then I'm perfectly happy reading a chapter of theirs every so often.

Oh, and Jones was there too.

Oh yeah, I should advertise this a bit, so, this is what i'm writing atm: Kobold, very light on the numbers litrpg type thing about a kid who has to leave her kobold home and live with humans.

It's schlock, but I'm enjoying writing it, and people seem to be enjoying reading it. It updates every other day (scheduling is magic).

edit: "scheduling is magic" should be the next RR magazine theme.

So Spire Dweller had just had it's second volume epilogue, and the series is getting professionally edited, stubbed, and published to Amazon soon. It's nice seeing a casual author go pro! And apparently her publisher is Selkie Myth? I had no idea Selkie was doing publishing now.

Yup! I've been doing it for close to a year now! I try to pick good stories that could use a bigger spotlight and shine on them. I just don't talk about it a lot here because we're here to discuss web serials!

To be fair, He said 'go' not 'explain your plan'.

I think that Perry meant go as in go ahead and tell me but March intentionally or unintentionally misinterpreted it in his lust for royal blood.

But yes, March is the best. It's been really cool seeing him become more of a person.

I dropped Thresholder after the arctic crawler world as his tagalong and new person (intentionally vague) and new setting seemed like it was going to be full of tedious crap I wasn’t going to care about. Did I err?

Well 1 out of 2 is fine?

That is a definitive time traveller. Playing it a lot differently then Mirian is but still probably has the same goal? Does try to stop the destruction of the divine monument but is unable.

New prediction (uhm its probably obvious) there is a third party who is playing the two nations against each other. The fake praetorian is one and the man who instigates the slaughter of the akatonan embassy is another. Possible other cult members is the Marshall. Luspire is also in the cards but it's either the Marshall or him.

Dead Tired is so delightfully funny, I love it. Somehow the love of puns and wordplay from Harold just reliably gets me chuckling, and the conciet of the story itself is just a great premise.

Interesting theory. Though if that's another looper I feel like they can't have been doing it for long, since it sounds like their attempt to stop the marshal was both improvised and incredibly ineffective.

Also what the hell is up with the marshal? I mean, it's already established that Akana kills everyone including civilians, but "Put the animals out of their misery" to a bunch of students? That's incredible levels of messed up. That's kind of why I originally suspected she might be the looper and have been looping so long she's pretty much lost it.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/59240/hard-enough

It's a slice of life story about an author self-insert who woke up as Brock and after the dad left decided to be a better gym leader and big brother / pseudo-parent. I won't call it a great amazing story or anything but it's hooked me so far, it gives a lot of similar vibes to Beware of Chicken at times.

Hard Enough is the fanfic where a dude with the mind of a 30 - 40 year old has been dating the gym leader Sabrina since she was 13 14. So uhh tread lightly. There's also some problematic stuff involving mind raping people that I found pretty distasteful.

I didn't even consider that, thats really creepy even though it was all prior to the start of the story.

I can understand why it has a bunch of followers but even beyond some of the weirder and skeevier bits it also has some serious issues with basic grammar and syntax that take me out of the story a lot.

Its also just spinning its wheels at this point and has spent the last... 4 months? on updates about how Brock entered a tournament and absolutely swept it without any issues and made Faulkner's dad go home. And now its just been like 4 chapters of Brock... judging a contest. In general the story has a serious problem with stakes and lets Brock just defuse a lot of it through essentially half remembering plot points from the anime.

That isn't really what Pokemon battles are like in the setting. Honestly that's a rather trite and pithy way to sum up the appeal of Pokemon; it's an easily made facile statement that misunderstands the themes of Pokemon (which are simple enough but they aren't that).

Most of the time when I see non-edge Pokemon it’s set up as ‘pokemon actually really like fighting and getting stronger, and go with trainers voluntarily because a good trainer can make them very strong and get them lots of good fights’. Ethical dog-fighting with informed consent.
