Sort of a "holy poo poo, that guy steps on the finger and then BAM HE GETS A BLUEBERRY! I love blueberries! COME HERE MAGIC BLUEBERRY FINGER!" type of thing? I have a ringneck (shimi) that I've had since I was a kid, shes outlived all my other birds. She was bitey as all hell when we got her despite being handraised and attacked my dads ringneck to the point he needed plastic surgery to stop him being blind/getting infected and dying. I've looked after her since the Quaker I had as a kid, who was awesome to me and got out one day when my little brother decided to give him treats and didn't close the cage right, he was like 8-9. She got more bitey because Yoda (the quaker) was incredibly aggressive to anyone that wasn't me because I was the only one who ever handled him. With my second Quaker, Kimi, she kinda calmed down a bit. Kimi was a very quiet and gentle bird but she got cagebound when I broke my leg shortly after getting her and hated being inside to the point I was scared I was going to scare her to death because she was that stressed, so she spent a lot of time outdoors. Again I was the only one to handle her, but not as much as a bird would normally get. She was happy to chill in her cage and scream at the Indian neighbours across the street and get a scratch whenever I walked past. Kimi ended up getting eaten by a snake who bent the bars on the cage to get to her. Shimi now lives in Kimis old cage because her one got rusty. My Quake that I have now, Bobby, is a lot more friendly to everyone else and is past the critical age for Quakers were they turn into assholes if they haven't been socialised enough so he's still friendly to people who aren't me. Shimi has calmed down a tonne. She lets me touch her through the bars, she accepts food, she doesn't freak out when people are right up next to her cage. We moved and I haven't got the snakeproof walls built up here yet that I had at the other house, so the birds are behind barriers but they are open topped. Shimi was a bird that would attack anything that came near her cage, today I came out to the cages to put Bobby away and some little wild wagtails had pushed themselves through the bend in the bars the snake made and she was just sitting with them. I was seriously contemplating giving her away to a rescue at the start of the year because I'd given up on ever taming her again but she's made a huge amount of progress. underage at the vape shop fucked around with this message at 04:44 on May 13, 2016 |

This was one of the reasons I got a lovebird: Though oddly, while Bitey loved hiding in boobs (and crawling into sleeves and collars and pockets for a snooze), Toast doesn't like doing it at all. Though if I'm wearing a low-neckline dress he'll sometimes dive in, have a look around under my boobs, then come back out (?????). Maybe it is just the wild-coloured peachies that like ensconcing themselves in boobs. Also, during nesting season, the bush turkeys at QUT like to roost in low branches and swoop people. It is very surprising to many people that they're able to swoop (or even fly).

CROWS EVERYWHERE posted:This was one of the reasons I got a lovebird: Ahahahahha that's awesome. Person who was worried about their bird going crazy after a day of no socialization - I wouldn't stress too much. I hate myself for this and will always carry it as a mark of shame but I used to be a nasty alcoholic and put my birds through a lot. I had two parakeets, rest in peace Chuck and Tito and I still have Wandy. When I lived alone in Kansas I had some close call hospital visits in which the birds went a few days without me. That is the mark of shame thing that I hate myself for. I let them sit in my apartment without interaction or fresh food while I was writhing around on a gurney in a hospital. I'm so loving ashamed and I'm OK telling my fellow bird crazies. But it goes to show your birds will not absolutely collapse with a few days of no attention. They will get pissy though. I remember one time I was picking up Wandy, the cockatiel, from my friend after a short visit to another city. Wandy came out of the cage, looked at me, and then turned her back on me and started making angry noises. After about five minutes she gave up on her snub and was under my chin. Also I've been sober for over two years. Yay!

Whenever I abandon Toast overnight or with a friend for a weekend, he is just full of joy that I'm back and proceeds to try to spew on me and my fingers (his fat pink baby birds) as much as he can. He's not very bright though (to say the least...) so he might not have the brainpower to be traumatised by being on his lonesome for however many hours.

Most people who know Toast IRL are pretty sure he's a little bit special He's cuddly and loves people (and biting) but doesn't seem to learn anywhere near as quickly as other birds. He's got Step Up down pat, but it took him a long time to learn it, and he still hasn't mastered Come Here. Bitey got both of those down in the short time I had him, as well as Drop That, and was getting much better at not biting (by being put in the cage on timeout for 5 minutes). He still hasn't figured out Hot (or that hot cups of tea or bowls of soup are Hot) despite many, many, many opportunities to do so (Again, something Bitey picked up pretty quick.) I've tried making the most basic of foraging toys for him (a spray of millet, shown to him, covered in a tissue while he watches) and he just looks and squeaks or bites me, then ignores it. He's a very cute bird and I wouldn't give him up for anything, but he's definitely not the sharpest lightbulb in the picnic basket. e: If I whistle at him though, he always whistles back, so that's nice

So I boop him on the head and go "bonk bonk bonk" so he fusses and then I preen his crest Sometimes if Steve is in a good mood I can boop him with my palm and he'll act like he's being petted for a while and it's really cute. He doesn't like his crest being touched much though even for removing feather casings, you have to build up goodwill by preening elsewhere then quickly rush and try to get a few feathers before he gets lovely

I got reminded of something really sad today One day when I was a kid, we came home from school to a budgie that had got itself into Floyd's cage through the bars, and my brother was really excited because he thought it meant he could have a bird too like me. We took it to the vet because we thought it was a loose pet because we don't get them wild on the coast, turns out it had terminal cancer. I remember the vet telling me that its a common thing with Budgies and people just release them when their aviary birds get it. Poor dude got put down because he didn't have long left. He probably came looking for food or water. People loving suck.
