Well, maybe not this one. Yet. E: drat, Mookie's sick. Sounds kind of like laryngitis, if that makes any sense. Still has a healthy appetite, and about as active as he ever was. The nearest vet for a lot of miles admits to zero experience with birds, and is usually booked solid in any case. Looks like we might be making a road trip in the next couple of days. Ritz did something very odd today, and it's got me concerned (scheduled a vet appointment for Saturday morning, was the earliest available) I was sweeping the house and when I got over by his cage he was dangling from one of his perches by his left foot, which is normal Ritz behavior, dangling is just what he does. However, I noticed that he wasn't able to get up onto the perch as he normally does from the dangling position. Thinking he was just horsing around I opened the cage but he just stayed there, so I put my finger out and he wouldn't let go of the perch or grab my finger with his other foot. I scooped him up and brought him to the couch, he was very tall and noticably scared looking, feathers tucked etc. So when I asked him to step up, he stepped up with his left foot first and then his right leg just kind of stayed extended downward, like straight out and he wouldn't use his leg at all, then once he was perched he slowly brought the other leg up and put his foot down. It's almost like his foot was asleep or something, which I dunno if that's even a thing in birds. I put a blanket over us and sat with him for about 5 minutes to calm him down, and when it felt like he was perching normally I gave him an apple slice as a test. His left foot is his dominant foot so I wanted to see if he would perch on his right and hold the apple with his left as he usually does. No problem, after he finished the apple he was running around on top of the cage as he always does and seems totally fine now, putting weight on the right leg, perching fine etc. He's not been fluffed up at all, has the same appetite, hasn't lost or gained any weight, and is currently sitting atop my head preening my hair and honking as I type this. We're going in for a physical and a blood/poop panel on Saturday, if this were a stroke or something wouldn't he present other symptoms and be affected for more than just a couple minutes? I'm scared for the little guy.

Frozen Pizza Party posted:Ritz did something very odd today, and it's got me concerned (scheduled a vet appointment for Saturday morning, was the earliest available) It's probably not anything serious, though going to the vet is a smart idea. I think you don't need to worry about a stroke, at least! I've seen Griddle do this after bruising her leg before. I don't know if bird legs can fall asleep, or if bird legs can get cramps, but maybe those are possibilities?

Yeah, going to the vet isn't a bad idea, but my limited experience has taught me that birds are very, very cautious about any minor injuries with their feet, so it might have just been the bird equivalent of a stubbed toe.

Blood tests, nose and throat cultures, 2 antibiotic shots, antifungal drops, antibiotic drops, probiotic drops, some dietary supplements, and $500 later, Mookie is going to be pretty much bulletproof once he gets better. Currently making angry squeaks in lieu of his normal cockatoo bellowing. Anybody have any tips for giving nose drops to an entirely unwilling set of boltcutters?

Gillian has started doing this thing where she grabs on to either the cage roof or my clothes with her claws, flaps her wings with increasing intensity until she loses grip and takes off, then flies around the room screaming like that was a completely unexpected result.

Burning off extra energy My dad's cockatiel did that all the time, but they're so light and generate so much lift their little talons can't hold them down We'd "fly" her around after she did that, and afterwards she'd usually have a good nap

Samba does that occasionally. He won't take off but instead will grip the cage and beat furiously upside down.

Bird deciding to sleep on me was always the best time. Sometimes I'd have multiple birds napping in my lap. Also should I ever take a nap on the couch it's an open invitation for birds to come and nap with me, except they like to sleep right by my head. They'll practically butt up against my nose. Then I move while sleeping and bump into them or scare them and they do angry beak bonks on my sleeping face and I'm always afraid I'll wake up without an eyelid. It's so cute though.

One of the requirements of Crouton's bitey bird probation is that she is not allowed in sleeves

Samba is warming up to me and will now actually perch on my shoulder. He's also started grooming me. Interestingly it seems like he's pretty territorial when he's on top of the cage. I suppose he feels exposed so he'll make defensive screeches at people passing by. Also he's not a fan of birds he can see outside. He'll either try to fly off or he'll make more defensive screeching or his alarm call.

Crouton is less bitey and will Step Up and let her ears get tickled without violent retaliation (mostly) again Freckles are still fair game. She is also still not allowed in sleeves. Reasonable bird bed times work.

Hey bird friends, I have a new phone with a decent camera, so you know what that means! I call this series Adventures on the Fruit Bowl Full of Junk What's that? What're you doing? What is this how do I climb? Oooh, what's that? What's this? Shortly followed by a mysterious flying pencil hitting me in the foot. No witnesses could explain this bizarre happening. I hope you enjoyed this episode of the Adventures of Hinkie and Bolbo, the Barely Distinguishable White Floofs.

It's time to find a new bird sitter. Fiancee and I were out of town at family events, meeting more in-laws and celebrating, etc. Young lady we used is a student of my fiancee's, had birds growing up, worked at a zoo in high school, seemed to know what she was doing when she was over to familiarize with Nicky. We stressed the importance of her diet and of spending quality time with her. We specified in writing that she gets her dried fruits and grains "cereal" blend in the morning, a chop "smoothie" later in the day, plus some bits of baked sweet potato and the rare cashew as treats, plus having access to her seed and pellet blend and fresh water. Her text updates said Nicky was being grumpy and a bit territorial, but that she was eating well enough, though she overturned some of her smoothie, and was eating lots of seeds. Coming home, it's clear from what ingredients are left here that the sitter made a smoothie once and never gave her cereal at all. She gave her some of the fruit whole, which we told her Nicky rarely will eat and ended up all over her cage floor. It seems that instead of being a treat, she was fed sweet potato and peanut butter exclusively since it was easy to get her to eat it and nothing else after the first smoothie got tipped over. Judging by the damage to bird-safe wood trim we put up to protect our cabinets, she didn't get much supervision while out of her cage, and far far worse, she's re-plucked some of her legs and a patch on her chest. Now she won't accept her cereal or smoothie from me at all, and has even rejected cashews. All she wants to eat is goddamned sweet potatoes. Her overpreening is noticeably worse, even with loving attention. I'm furious. On top of that, I already felt guilty for leaving her, and now I don't know how long it will be before she's doing well again with us here. It's hard to express just how maddening and frustrating the situation is.
