Okay, let's talk a bit about Ayakashi Triangle. Because I'm the kind of person who puts more thought into something than the author seems to have. (Fair warning for those who wish to seek this out: it's a manga by Kentaro Yabuki, who previously did To Love Ru. If you know who that is, you know everything already, but I'll be even more explicit (like this manga, ha ha!): there's a lot of gratuitous T&A shots in this manga. Like, a lot. Sometimes it almost crosses the border into softcore porn. So y'all be warned.) The plot of the manga is thus: Matsuri is a high school student and exorcist, and Suzu (his childhood friend) has a very high spiritual energy, which makes her very tasty for Ayakashi (basically spirits), so Matsuri spends a lot of time protecting her. Enter Shirogane, a really powerful Ayakashi, who attacks Suzu to eat her; Matsuri isn't quite strong enough to defeat Shirogane but performs a forbidden sealing spell on him, but as he shrinks down to cat-sized Shirogane gets mad that Matsuri and Suzu are all lovey-dovey, and curses Matsuri by turning him into a girl. So now the ongoing objective is for Matsuri and all his allies to find a way to undo the seal on Shirogane so he can un-curse Matsuri, while at the same time having some leverage to ensure that 1. Shirogane actually un-curses Matsuri (because Shirogane doesn't really want to), and 2. Shirogane doesn't immediately eat Suzu as soon as the seal is undone. However: Matsuri seems to take being a girl completely in stride. He doesn't mind at all that he's been turned into a girl, and even has some moments where he goes, "Hey, this is actually nice" (like when he makes friends with Suzu's classmates, he really enjoys the friendship and bonding). Also, Matsuri and Suzu are clearly still super into each other, even now that Matsuri's been turned into a girl; perhaps even more so than before. This manga, to be quite honest, feels like a bit like a modern version of Ranma 1/2: it plays around with gender in a way that can be easily read as queer, while likely being 100% unintentional about it. Even though it has some weird hangups about gender and sexuality, like it seems adamant in trying to tell the reader that yuri is forbidden love (i.e. girls can't love other girls in a romantic way). Like, to give an example of the kind of stuff that's in this thing: in the latest chapter (as of this writing) one of Matsuri and Suzu's friends finds out about them fighting malicious spirits, and they have to explain it to her; she goes "Huh, that's surprising, but in the end it's not a big deal. But you're not hiding anything else, right?" Matsuru and Suzu sweat a bit, but then go, "No, there's nothing else." And then this happens: In the first pic: it's very easy to give a trans reading to "If they find out, they'll hate me." And in the second pic... Dear readers, I guarantee you this isn't the first time Matsuri has considered staying a girl for good; it's probably the first time they're said it out loud, though. So yeah, wanna a tl;dr version of what I've written? This is a gender-bending manga that's been written without any intention of being queer, but is really easy to read as such. This has been an episode of "Mikl puts more thought into something that the author seems to have," like and subscribe, follow me on twitter and subscribe to my patreon. (Ayakashi Triangle runs in Jump, so it can be read on the Manga Plus website -- and I assume, also other places. Again, a reminder that it's very NSFW.) Its been a while since I read so tbf you have seen more then me at this point, but I just don't know if this is completely fair? Like yeah the author seems focus on just writing more of a silly romcom thing then anything but like people are much more aware of trans stuff. So I dunno maybe the author isn't that clueless. I doubt it will never get into the nifty gritty reality of it or anything but yeah. e: yet another update for kill switch! Snooze Cruise fucked around with this message at 19:12 on Jul 21, 2021 |

yeah honestly theres a thing in this thread where people just kinda assume that they know more about transness/gayness/etc than the author of any random manga they happen to read. like there's never thought that maybe the author fully understands what they're doing and just likes playing at boundaries without getting into the nitty gritty is what interests them. its kind of a lame way to read art. like i assure you, you arent putting more thought in than the author did.

I'd only read the first few chapters (pre-serialization I think?) of until I become a girl, but it's actually pretty good!. I do kinda hope they don't go for that swerve a lot of gender change manga go where it's like "Oh I was attracted to girls but now that I am one I'm actually into guys!". Like it's totally fine for that to happen but so often the way it's presented is less "I realize I'm into guys" and more "Because I am a girl, I am now into guys" which is... Biotruths-y? for lack of a better term.

You're right. I'm sure the cishet male author of a manga that hasn't demonstrated any awareness of gender and sexuality issues beyond the occasional joke is more aware of those issues than an actual trans woman and trans activist, who does real, tangible activism work in the field, and who's a published author of queer and trans fiction. Silly me.

i think it was funny the time people in the shoujo thread were asking if the manga "magical trans" was trans this isn't really related to what is going on im just kinda reminded of it and i found that funny anyway while i think miki might be wrong about how clueless the author is like... even if they aren't that doesn't mean they are going to be like interested in trans issues even if it informs their work, and i wouldn't assume either way until i see evidence. also its not really like, an amount of thought put into something thing at all. like of course an author is going to put more thought in their work then the average reader but that doesn't mean they are thinking of everything. part of the thing of reading gay subtext into works is people do sometimes write gay poo poo without meaning to. it can happen for a variety of reasons, whether its repress feelings, the artist kinda picking up subconscious stuff from society, or completely by accident. not that this is really a factor into this convo, because i do think the author probably has heard of trans people but, its just not really a matter of thought here. Which is fair, but the entire point of my post was "I put more thought into [the queer issues in] this manga than the author did." Since I spent the whole post talking about those, I thought the part between brackets was implied. Also, even if queer issues do not inform an author when they write a work, they absolutely do inform the reading. Take Ranma 1/2 for example: Takahashi has been very clear over the years, in interviews and such, that she gave no thought to Ranma's curse beyond "he turns into a girl when splashed with water and that can be used for fun gags," and yet the amount of analysis that has been written about it could fill several libraries. Plus, there is death of the author to consider: once something is published, any reading of it which is supported by the text is valid, whether the author originally intended it or not. Which is to say: yes, I am reasonably certain I'm putting more thought into my analysis of queer issues in Ayakashi Triangle than the author gave thought to those issues while writing it.
