It's going to take quite a bit. There's over 600 BTC in combined buy orders right at 400.

worth tracking down once it's available to watch again though. anotonpolos really lost it a few times, claimed food and water have no value, and that if bitcoin were banned that it would partner with churches to argue free speech

also bitcoin is a business operated by a math robot.

If you trade on Mt. Gox, you are trading goxbucks for goxcoins.

It's all scrip on Mt. Gox's ledger.

You could also put outside money in.

I think it roughly boils down to this: Sometimes, an update will work where miners with one version of the software will produce a block that looks good to that version of the software, but not to the others. If that happens, the blockchain forks in two directions, and the transaction record gets hazy and people are told not to spend any bitcoins.

If the update produces blocks that are always acceptable to every version currently used, it's okay. I think the story with fixing transaction malleability is more complicated, since it'd probably require the fields getting filled in the same order by every client for the easiest fix.

i'm not sure anyone anywhere actually knows, the way i've seen it talked about is that if you "tighten" a rule, like say the rule of "all blocks must be X bytes or less" to be "all blocks must be X-100 bytes or less" you don't need to fork, because new blocks satisfy the old rule as well... but if you want to say "all blocks must be Y bytes or less" where Y > X, you now have a fork when your first block that fails the old protocol is mined.

this applies to block sizes, number of coins, mining algorithm, difficulty calculation, and lord knows what else really.

edit: they also have a hardfork wishlist which is changes that would be nice but would require a hardfork.

The state of the protocol (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 8 minutes ago by cptmcclain

Bitcoin is not dead. The idea is out. The world is forever changed.

In the year 2008 little be-known to the world was one of the most significant events in human history. An idea that would forever change the world was formed and released. It was the construction of a unified protocol that was aimed at governing the processes of man. Anyone could review the code. It was the peoples law. The most democratic idea invented to date. The transition was not a smooth one. Many skeptics proclaimed time and time again that the protocol was not real enough to unite the people. In fact this was the common view. However it was not hard to see that this protocol was a natural evolution of man, to move from paper to code is a natural progression. When someone buys units of the code they buy a part of the protocol. The value of the protocol is determined by the laws that it has written in it and the results of it's emergent behavior in the context of human behavior and physical laws.

I have reviewed the code. It is so valuable almost to be deemed priceless. I believe the code(s) will grow in value to the extent that all that we have known in the world will be governed by something very much like it. The story of this protocol and its effect on mankind is the most important drama in our lifetimes. In fact, I think that one day a huge creature from the paleolithic era will proclaim on national television "I need three fifty".
