I enjoyed parts of Red Lips. I'd always thought of SoV movies as simply too lovely for me to ever get into. This is a worrying development.

Honestly, I think it looks good.

I still got time to think on it. Might just take the weekend and see if any reviews pop up and what else needs to be said. It’s not like I’m itching to open it and the blu-ray I do have looks good. Just would’ve been nice to have gotten a final version for home video.

I have never* disagreed with Gripweed, you do seem to be a barometer of the eclectic taste I enjoy, but Lloyd is a treasure. After doing like 500 of these intros occasionally there's a less enthralling one, but it's also a pleasure to see Lloyd. I even search for Lloyd Kaufman podcast/video interviews on youtube every year and catch up, he does so many of those. Got to see him live one time too, whatta guy.

Pi though is all paper. Design is cool but doesn't feel like it will last.

Sony is releasing a 20-disc Three Stooges collection on Blu-ray on July 23:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D49XFZ4V
(Just added to Amazon, so it's at MSRP)

It features 100 classic shorts (roughly half of the overall Columbia tenure), plus 20 bonus solo comedy shorts, and eight feature films. Seems like they opted to pick and choose 100 shorts instead of it being purely chronological, which opens the door for a second volume.

Oh sweet lord. I got that entire DVD collection (all 9 volumes I think it was), but I’d be down for an upgrade, shame it isn’t done chronologically.

Sorry, I'm quite busy at the moment.
Kino Lorber is committed to physical media.

quote:

Kino Lorber releases a lot of films on DVD. Why are you still betting on physical media?

The physical media business is still an important part of our business, even if it’s in a transitional phase right now. When we entered, it was a $7 billion to $10 billion business; now it’s struggling to be a $1 billion business, but it’s still a $1 billion business. And we see opportunity there, particularly in a world where there’s a rapid deterioration of the availability of titles online. When Netflix had a rental-by-mail business, I did some of their first deals, back in the early [2000s]. Back then, there were about 100,000 titles available from Netflix for rental by mail. As of the latest report, there are probably 3,000 titles film titles available to stream on Netflix and probably, in total, no more than 7,000 or 8,000 to stream across all of the services.

For collectors who love cinema, and I’m not just talking about the extreme cinephiles, I’m talking about film lovers who recognize the fact that physical media is a way for them to have the films that they love in the best possible versions — we release in 4K UHD — and have them forever. Those little plastic discs will probably outlive all of us. So we’ve cultivated those customers and they sustain our business, even as we recognize the deterioration of that business on a macro level. It’s a curated approach, a targeted approach, but there are many, many really good titles out there, even with the strictest curation standards. Films that really deserve to be made available again.

I’ve heard you say that DVD is the new vinyl, that physical media is set for a revival. Where do you see evidence of that?

You’re using DVD generically, of course, but what we’re really talking about is the newest standard, which is 4K UHD. You won’t see anything in as good a quality as you can see on a 4K UHD copy now. And it allows for including a range of material beyond what you could put on a DVD or even a Blu-ray. It is going to become the collectible of record. People who really care about preserving their own cultural collections are going to be embracing 4K. We heard that at the Oscars. I had a great chat with Christopher Nolan, who has been a big champion of physical media. He loves our stuff and maybe we’ll do some things with him from his library, but he’s embraced the physical media business. [Quentin] Tarantino was certainly one of them who raves about the importance of preserving cinema culture in physical media. Whether the comparison with vinyl is exactly on target or not, it’s close enough.

Right on, I mostly own the classics he directed.

That's cool. For me, I own about five 4K discs, the most physical media I've bought in years is Discotek blu-rays for old anime, DVDs of old TV shows that aren't on streaming, etc.

Since it's a more niche thing now like they mention, much like another niche thing I like, US comics (manga is popular though), comics and color graphic novels just get more pricey over time. And physical media movies just get more expensive, so I only buy a few these days. And I'm happy enough with the blu-rays that I only upgrade say something from one of my top 20 movies etc, or something where the blu-ray was notably messed up etc.

Plus I have a cheap TCL 4K TV in a room where the lights are usually on, so I feel like HDR is this special extra feature, the truth is I don't really need super high quality. I just want the stuff I dig at a cheap price if possible.

The numbers that article mentioned for streaming movies is interesting. I'm guessing that doesn't include stuff available for rent digitally? That might up the number. I'm sure DVD would still be bigger though.

I've never bought a blu-ray player myself, just PS3 (rip), PS4, and PS5. Right now the main reason I'd consider getting a player is so I can leave a Laverne & Shirley DVD in one of them, and a BSG blu-ray in one, and stuff.

It's from A24, their website, and yes region A. A24 releases are expensive though, and the packaging is cheaply made. But I wanted the 4K and it's a nostalgic film for me.

One option is instead of buying another Pi copy, you could put those funds towards a region free player.

Devil in a Blue Dress is so cool! I've been thinking of reading those books too.

Point Break is one of the greats. Candyman too, this is a lovely stack. I got the Candyman DVD back when I watched DVD extras a lot, sometimes with my friends, so we just kept saying "Cabrini Green" all the time, and doing impressions of Clive Barker's smokey voice. Ah the early 20s, when every piece of pop culture became of friend group meme.

But you still need to wait for the Sale to go live to learn the identity of our demented double bill of 70s horror classics along with the true identity of our UHD action epic.

Of course, the most exciting part of the Sale will be the unveiling of our two May releases, from Quality X and Command Cinema, which up until the sale goes live, will remain shrouded in mystery - quite fitting as one of them is a murder mystery.
