Jade runs out of mp pretty quickly since her mana pool is so small & I can't resist multithrusting everything to death, so I gave her a Happy Hat to recover mp as I walk around

the switch to wizard classes getting their MP back easily through natural combat and taking small breaks to fighters being the ones that run out of steam is one of my favorite shifts in JRPGs. the fighters still have something to do so their resources are either nuisance clearers or a way to do crowd control in boss fights. it means the situation where you end up fighting 200 ice wolves in final fantasy 1 and just get bored never happens

Every boss fight so far is like: Sylvando Oomple Jade, Jade multithrust, MC/Hendrick are basically supports. They kabuff/magic shield/heal when necessary and put in decent dmg otherwise

I also got Jade the unblockable spear upgrade so she's literally unstoppable atm

Poor Erik hasn't had a decent knife in like 20 hours

I feel bad for never using Rab outside of a backup Kerplunk user, so I swapped him to claws and he still kinda sucks lol. I just don't see how to include him into a main party. The Flareon of DQXi?! *youtube thumbnail face*

he's basically there for midgame utility I think, definitely falls off in act 3. he's good for magic when there's no better magic user available and pearly gates is good when other party members haven't unlocked any Target All moves yet

rab is a great red mage to pair with sylvando to make up for his lack of oomphle. he also has unique stuff like insulate and pearly gates thats really useful, and his pep powers own

veronica is crazy strong, especially in act 3 but she likes to die a lot. on stronger monsters she gets oneshot all the time

another great shift in modern JRPGs has been the one from "whoever needs the most experience/ap/whatever goes in the party" to "I have new outfits or abilities for people I want to try," lol.

The worst poo poo was games having equipment that gave you bonus stats on level up so you'd have to watch XP like a hawk and shuffle things around when they got close

lol, yeah. final fantasy 6 had this going on but to its credit, the esper level up bonuses were legitimately just... bonuses. you could extremely easily destroy the game without ever thinking about them.

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

FF9's the same way only it doesn't even tell you about the level up bonuses lol

It's for the best because if you play without knowing they're there you'll never become aware of the system at all and never need to care about your stats one bit

Crystalotl is no joke, god drat. Got completely team wiped twice in a row before going full defense mode w/MC as the main damage dealer. Managed to get him to orange health when he went bonkers on my rear end. Managed to win with only 1 death (RIP Sylvando, thank you for your Oomphle). I guess he had to be tough in order to boost Serena's healing by 100

I always feel like I either get them right away or it's hours and hours of hunting for them for some reason, there's nothing in between

I'm a few hours into Final Fantasy X and god drat, I should have played it when it first came out. I avoided it for a while because I thought the aesthetics were lame but I was young stupid and gay and wrong because everything about this rules so far

It's got such a unique vibe at this point in the series, especially following up to the mood ff7 and 8 had (9 was a special case of it celebrating the entire thing up to that point). Just walking around to poo poo like this is unusually good

I should mention I'm playing the Japanese ps2 release of the international edition or whatever it's called. I'll usually go with the remastered versions for stuff like this for a first playthrough but I wanted to get a feel for what it was like back in the day without any glossy finish to it

it's dope,

ffx rules and the battle system is my favourite they ever managed in a Final Fantasy game, except for one thing which is that only characters who take an action in a fight get experience so if you want your party to level together you spend way too much time swapping people in and out

Bicyclops
Aug 27, 2004

i think most of my complaints about FFX are more about me than the game, lol. I love it, but i've never really experienced the main game the way it's meant to be played, I think. by the time i get the Calmlands, i'm always just invested in finding the best route to using the Arena to make everyone take two tours around the sphere grid and get out with 255 on most stats. it makes the ending, where you OHKO basically all the bosses, feel like more of a cutscene.

Good soup!
Nov 2, 2010

Yeah the battle system seems like it borrows a tiny bit from stuff like Grandia with the way you can bounce turns ahead/back, it's a cool twist on the formula

It's also dope to see what is generally an old school FF experience but with "modern" trappings. Even simple things like voice clips and banter during battle makes it an interesting bridge between old and new. I appreciate that they reinvented the gameplay a few times over but I also wonder what it would have been like had they done what Dragon Quest did and just refine the established gameplay formula to perfection but bring everything else up to current gen production values

That opening was cool as poo poo too, just dashing through waves of enemies lol

yep same, FFX to me feels like the best they ever did with iterating on the classic turn based or ATB systems from FFs 1-9, and then they got obsessed with MMOs and action RPGs and took FF combat in completely different directions. Not necessarily bad directions just different, and for somebody like me who really enjoys oldschool turn-based RPG combat like in DQ or the FFs up to X it's a shame that they don't make them like that anymore.

Part of me really wants a FFX remake because they beefed the remaster so badly, but most of me knows that it'd be four parts over fifteen years with DMC combat.
