Has anyone ever tried breeding animals for longevity? Why not?

I found a baby sparrow. It's still a nestling, it's barely fuzzy and is tiny. I know the best thing would be to find its nest and put it back, but it was found below a really thick and branchy pine tree and I could not find the drat thing. I called a local rescuer, but she told me that the only bird rescuer she knows is already full up with baby birds. She told me to feed it dog food soaked in water when it's daylight out. I fed it a few tiny pieces but don't know if it got enough food. I don't have a heating pad to keep it warm so all I could do was put a hot water bottle in with it. It's in a large bowl with washcloths.

It's very tiny and hard to feed. Tomorrow if it's still alive I'm gonna have to call around and see if there's anyone else who will take it, I don't know what I'm gonna do if there isn't. I know I can't keep this thing alive for the weeks it's going to take before it fledges.

Edit: Good news, the baby bird survived the night and in the daylight I was able to find its nest and put it back.
