I'm no expert, but the idea is if someone goes down for any reason other than a stumble/foot slip, they're deemed as being KO'd (because they probably were). Basically, if they didn't, their opponent would be pounding on a defenceless slab of meat for at least a few seconds otherwise. It's why I prefer MMA to boxing - the idea of knocking your opponent down for a 10 count is barbaric when you think about it.

Marcelo Garcia is arguably the pound for pound best grappler in the planet. Fighting in the 82kg division he's placed 2nd and 3rd in the absolute division, against guys much, much bigger than himself, won his weight class 3 times and only missed a 4th due to Pablo Popavitch openly cheating and the unusual scoring system at Abu Dhabi. He's got 4 gold medals from the Mundials, the world championship of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The guy is greased lighting, and apparently the nicest human being on the planet. An old but still good highlight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY8JlJZBgCk To put it in perspective, here's Marcelino rolling with (tooling) Olympic wrestler and two time NCAA D1 champ Ben Askrens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30Ujz5sCS3k
