Silver Spoon is a charming new manga by Hiromu Arakawa, author of Fullmetal Alchemist. Meet the main character, Hachiken Yugo, an honor student who has recently been accepted into Yezo Agricultural High School. To Hachiken's misfortune, Yezo turns out to be more "Agricultural" and less "School" Luckily, he soon makes many friends, such as the lovely Mikage (The rider, not the horse) Mikage really likes Horses. And Horses really like Hachiken! Hachiken is working on learning that horses are not bears. So begin Hachiken's many adventures at Yezo. Read Silver Spoon! Learn interesting facts about pigs! Also, it has Armstrong, which is really all that needs to be said. All currently translated chapters are available here Somebody fucked around with this message at 07:11 on Jan 15, 2013 |

Hooray! Fullmetal Agriculturalist! It's a really good manga. It also makes me hungry for pizza.

I really like this comic. I also like how Hachiken is a wishy washy kid with motivational problems who doesn't know what to do with himself, yet is not an annoying pain in the rear end. That just proves what a good writer Arakawa is. There is a real undercurrent of "Your stupid-rear end existential crises don't mean dick in the face of pressing practical concerns you little bitch" in this comic, and I love it

Definitely one of the best non-fighting ongoing shounen running right now. Always a pleasure to read it. I wonder if the recent Pizza shenanigans are going to lead to Hachiken deciding he wants to get into cooking. I mean, it's a farming school, so there's tons of ingredients and food experts. Everyone lives simply for eating. He invariably help people and likes producing things for people. Just saying, him deciding to become a Chef wouldn't be crazy!

Anybody on the fence about reading this needs to start right the hell now. The writing is great and the expressions never fail to make me laugh.

I've read Hiromu Arakawa's little author blurbs at the end of the Fullmetal Alchemist books: she comes from Hokkaido, from out in the country, it seems. I just think it's great that she's using her background and personal knowledge to make a neat manga about something most people know very little about. I don't feel it's very "shounen manga"-like, the different focus, the slower pacing, all lend it a feel of a seinen manga; but I still quite enjoy it all the same.

It's still early in the series - still plenty of time for it to transit into a battle manga after the students stumble on the Principal's dark conspiracy. Holstein cows are people.

Color me intrigued - I thought the only "major" manga7anime out there dealing with agriculture with any level of detail was Moyashimon, and from what I read that one made a lot of concessions to fantasy. This looks a bit more interesting, and its particularly fascinatin how an author goes for something so down-to-earth and possibly educational after something as fantasy-heavy as FMA. I hope this does well.

This is pretty close to the perfect storm of anime for me. Harvest Moon? Check. Informational? Check. Humor? Check. Solid Artwork? Check. Interesting characters? Check. If this was somehow combined with fighting I think I'd be having serious problems waiting for it between chapters. Right now it serves as a great balance to some of the more action-focused manga like Advance of the Giants in terms of stuff I'm following. Can't wait for more, and to see what sort of challenges lie ahead of our protagonist. Especially what happens to pork bowl.

It just occured to me that a cross-over / collaboration between Yukimura (mangaka of Vinland Saga, currently in a farming arc) and Arakawa would be one of the most glorious things ever.

I find you generally can't trust the somemanga rating system. I was reading their recommendation forum once and some guy had listed nothing but porno comics as his favorites. This farmville manga is very good though.

Yeah the best way to go on somemanga is just to pretend there's absolutely nobody else that uses the website. Every time I click on the forum topics to the right I instantly hit back until I'm ADTRW and cry a little.
