I've been doing a relisten of 'classic' death metal albums, most of which I haven't listened to in 15 years. I've done about 28 albums in the last 3 weeks. Leprosy and Altars of Madness are still tops for me. I was a little surprised I didn't dig the Obituary albums as much as I used to. Mental Funeral and Onward to Golgotha both kind of surprised me how much I like them. I kind of forgot about those albums.

I still have a lot on my own list to go, but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions of lesser known classics of death metal. I've never listened to either the Terrorizer album or the Repulsion album, but I'm seeing that a lot of early death metal bands looked up to those two bands. They just didn't get to record their albums until the late 80s when labels started signing everyone. So something like those, or albums that got released in the 90s when there wasn't as much hype.

These aren't what I would consider "lesser known classics" (except maybe the Demigod and Sempiternal Deathreign LPs), but you mention albums like Leprosy, AOM, Onward Towards Golgotha, etc. which are basically cornerstones of DM, so I'm not sure how plugged in you are.

Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes
Sempiternal Deathreign - The Spooky Gloom
Immolation - Dawn of Possession
Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity
Pestilence - Consvming Impvlse
Decomposed - Hope Finally Died...

I live for this poo poo! Some of these you probably know.

Atheist - Piece of Time; Unquestionable Presence (Elements also rules but is barely death metal
Incubus (not that one) - Serpent Temptation; Beyond the Unknown (the most savage death/thrash Christians can muster)
Atrocity - Hallucinations
Gorguts - Considered Dead (gets overlooked because of Erosion of Sanity and especially Obscura, but they were extremely good even just as a regular DM band)
Convulse - World Without God
Asphyx - The Rack; Last One on Earth
Death Strike - Fuckin' Death
Liers in Wait - Spiritually Uncontrolled Art
Miasma - Changes
Timeghoul - Tumultuous Travelings
Human Remains - Where Were You When (discography comp, about 90 minutes of tech death and grindcore)
Solstice - Solstice; Pray
Fleshcrawl - Descend Into the Absurd
Order From Chaos - Stillbirth Machine
Demilich - Nespithe
Electrocution - Inside the Unreal
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Rottrevore - Iniquitous
diSEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence Into the Peripheral
Paramaecium - Exhumed of the Earth
Phlebotomized - Immense Intense Suspense
Sadistic Intent - Resurrection
Molested - Blod-draum
Adramelech - Psychostasia
Monstrosity - Millennium
Pan.Thy.Monium - Khaooohs & Kon-Fus-Ion
Grotesque - In the Embrace of Evil (also a discography comp)

And here's my little Swedeath corner:
Afflicted - Prodigal Sun
Carbonized - For the Security
Wombbath - Internal Caustic Torments
Utumno - Across the Horizon
Seance - Fornever Laid to Rest; Saltrubbed Eyes
God Macabre - The Winterlong
Nirvana 2002 - Complete Recordings 1989-91
Moondark - The Shadowpath

Have already done the Demigod, Immolation, and Pestilience (along with Testimony of the Ancients). I haven't done Erosion of Sanity yet but did Obscura (one of my favorites) and Considered Dead. I read they had Obscura completely written in 1993 but thats when they were dropped by the label, and labels in general stopped picking up bands. So they basically just rehearsed Obscura for 5 years until they finally got another record deal. Sucks that there could have been more albums out of that group. I haven't heard of the other two so will check them out.
