I've been doing a relisten of 'classic' death metal albums, most of which I haven't listened to in 15 years. I've done about 28 albums in the last 3 weeks. Leprosy and Altars of Madness are still tops for me. I was a little surprised I didn't dig the Obituary albums as much as I used to. Mental Funeral and Onward to Golgotha both kind of surprised me how much I like them. I kind of forgot about those albums. I still have a lot on my own list to go, but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions of lesser known classics of death metal. I've never listened to either the Terrorizer album or the Repulsion album, but I'm seeing that a lot of early death metal bands looked up to those two bands. They just didn't get to record their albums until the late 80s when labels started signing everyone. So something like those, or albums that got released in the 90s when there wasn't as much hype.

Saw Blind Guardian live last night in Dallas for the first time in 8 years (not counting Demons and Wizards). Still my favorite live band of all time, still loving ripping. Also a lot more fun if you know the all the words to the Bard’s Song.

Will listen to the Disincarnate and the Sinister. Haven't heard those before. I know I've listened to Therion but I remember precisely zero about them.Oldstench posted:These aren't what I would consider "lesser known classics" (except maybe the Demigod and Sempiternal Deathreign LPs), but you mention albums like Leprosy, AOM, Onward Towards Golgotha, etc. which are basically cornerstones of DM, so I'm not sure how plugged in you are. Have already done the Demigod, Immolation, and Pestilience (along with Testimony of the Ancients). I haven't done Erosion of Sanity yet but did Obscura (one of my favorites) and Considered Dead. I read they had Obscura completely written in 1993 but thats when they were dropped by the label, and labels in general stopped picking up bands. So they basically just rehearsed Obscura for 5 years until they finally got another record deal. Sucks that there could have been more albums out of that group. I haven't heard of the other two so will check them out. Henchman of Santa posted:I live for this poo poo! Some of these you probably know. Have done Athiest - Piece of Time and will get around to the others, and have done the Gorguts. Have on the list (only existing in my brain) Asphyx, Demilich, Necrophobic and Monstrosity (I remember really liking Imperial Doom). Incubus, gently caress yeah, I forgot about that band but remember really liking the Serpent Temptation. Some of the others I've heard of but don't think I've ever listened. Got one or two I should prioritize?
