I thought I might as well start the ball rolling on this. Please try and put a little effort into both request and recommendations. This isn't PYF. I have two requests: Can anyone recommend anything along the lines of Hardcore History? I'm thinking in terms of tone rather than subject matter it doesn't have to be history specifically. Something that makes me feel like I've learnt something and won't cause me to fall asleep behind the wheel. and Is anyone listening to Mohr Stories? I listened to the first one and was on the fence. I really like the behind the scenes stuff with regards to working actors and comedians, or anything in the entertainment industry actually, but found Mohr to be pretty annoying. Anyone have any opinions of it as an ongoing show? Alternatively anything else along these lines I should be checking out?

It doesn't quite fit the second criteria, as the speaker is quite subdued, but I very much enjoyed 12 Byzantine Rulers, a 19 part podcast detailing the rise and fall of the Byzantine Empire through 12 of its most influential rulers. Obviously being less than 20 parts at about 15-30 minutes a piece he wasn't able to go TOO in depth on the thousand year history of the Byzantine Empire, but the 12 rulers he chose to discuss in detail I found to be pretty entertaining and interesting. It helps that the Byzantine Empire was one of those topics that was, at least in my experience, rarely brought up in High School and only taught as part of a medieval history class in college. It looks like the author also has another history podcast called Norman Centuries but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

I'm on a Mohr Stories jag right now... pretty good stuff. The episodes where he goes behind the scenes at SNL and the all movies he's been in are excellent - the one's where he's just bullshitting with his comedian friends are ok, nothing special. The ABC's of SNL (all two episodes) are great too. It's great to hear what an rear end in a top hat Lorne Michaels is from multiple podcast sources.

If 12 Byzantine Rulers works for you and you want something educational, you should absolutely check out The History of Rome. Up to something like 150 parts now, the host traces Roman history from its earliest origins - mostly in the 'great man' style, but with some other cultural information that's interesting. He has a very conversational style I, at least find is pretty easy to listen to.

Yeah I really just skip the ones where he's just bullshitting because other podcasts deliver the bigger and better laughs and look for episodes where he's talking about showbiz/acting. However, as of lately, Nikki Cox has been annoying the gently caress out of me with all the pounding punchlines into the ground that she does.

It's stories about movies and life told by Stephen Tobolowsky, who's probably most famous as Ned Ryerson from Groundhog Day. Tobolowsky manages to tell incredible stories about moviemaking (his episodes on Deadwood and Groundhog Day are amazing and compelling), but his best work starts as a story about one thing and becomes something incredibly different and profoundly moving. Both podcasts about Mississippi Burning are incredible for this.

I am so very jazzed about a podcast forum. This is going to be awesome! I hesitate to be the first to recommend anything political, but I can't help really liking Citizen Radio. I'd be lying if I didn't say it's for left-wing firebrands. So, if that's your thing, go for it. I haven't had the guts to try turn anyone onto it yet because they often spend the first ten minutes talking about cats or twitter or other stuff, and I feel people might be turned off when they get preachy about veganism. But they update daily, they sometimes have really awesome guests (Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn before he died, Naomi Klein), and they cover a lot of the news that cable won't touch. And I find them funny, but I could see how others might not. Also, Skeptoid. But I think everyone knows how awesome Skeptoid is by now. If not, it's a skeptic podcast. And it's awesome. TWiT is really pretty great, and it's made up pretty much entirely of old displaced TechTV hosts (it was even originally called Revenge of The Screen Savers), and as such it's pretty awesome. The world can always use more Leo. Also, for Tabletop RPGs and their ilk, there's always Fear The Boot. I wouldn't say it's that great as a podcast, but it's probably the highest quality tabletop RPG podcast I've ever heard. It's worth at least a listen or two, if you're into that stuff.

Not that I don't appreciate 12BR but drat that dude loves him some Byzantines. China History podcast is definitely worth a listen too, although I do tend to get lost a bit and the author obviously resents having to go through every dynasty in order.

So I recently got into Weird Things the podcast, it's...honestly I don't know how to describe it, it's literally 3 dudes hanging around talking about weird things, often with some sort of zany roleplaying 'scenario' for two of them to work through to figure out what craziness happened. Are there any more like that? Like, just super loose, near entirely unserious looks at bizarre things without falling into either "THE ALIENS ARE COMING BECAUSE MY CRYSTAL TOLD ME TODAY IN A DREAM" or "HEH you believe in a common superstition, loving ignorant plebe!"?

I started listening to Caustic Soda and Weird Things around the same time. Caustic Soda is loving great, they take one subject, deadly, gross or just odd things (tanks, explosions, parasites etc) and discuss all the aspects of it, history, pop culture, in the news and the guests they have are actually interesting/funny/have some sort of knowledge in the subject, whether its just someone who is really into the subject as a hobby, or an actual expert in the field. Plus I think at least one of them is a goon. I need to finish listening to Weird Things, but the fact that Spiro named his billy club Lil' Fudge after his partner Fudge.

Similar to Caustic Soda (which I hadn't heard of before, and is great), is Tank Riot. 3 guys from tropical Madison, Wisconsin, who take a topic and talk about it for a while with their awesome Wisconsin accents. Their conspiracy theory episodes are great. So are the rest of them.

Not a podcast as such, but there are series of lectures from The Teaching Company that fit your criteria perfectly. Almost all of their history series are incredibly fascinating, and got me through hundreds of hours of boring warehouse work back in the days before podcasts were really a thing. They are horrendously expensive though, so unless you have a whole lot of money laying around this might not be too helpful...

Corn Scientist posted:Can any one recommend me some sciencey or learning stuff podcasts? I've been listening to some Radiolab and Monster Talk. I really loved the Radiolab episode they had on parasites. Most of the shows on HowStuffWorks are great. Stuff You Should Know - By far the best one. Good hosts, they aren't experts but they write articles for HowStuffWorks, and as a result actually do research. Twice a week they have a random topic. These past weeks have been: How Sword Swallowing Works. How Family Crests Work. How Acne Works. How The Moon Works. How Casinos Work. Stuff You Missed In History Class - Like SYSK, but with usually lesser known history. Since the start they've changed a host every few months, and they've all ranged in quality. After listening to them all I'm happy with this current two girls who host. Brain Stuff - Really short 1-2 minute episodes, a mix of all the shows on HowStuffWorks I guess. Stuff To Blow Your Mind - You can tell by the name what its about. Like the other shows, except this one is about amazing/fascinating things. That's all I've heard on HowStuffWorks, others are: Astronomy Cast is a great one for astronomy, the hosts are actually experts in the field, they can speak and carry on banter with each other and keep it interesting, even if you know jack poo poo about space. Plus their names are Pamela Gay and Fraiser Crane. Dan Carlin's Common Sense Dan Carlin's Hardcore History A lot of people are split on Dan Carlin, some people find his delivery annoying, but I like it. He's a really well spoken guy, smart and very good at filling a show with just him talking about whatever subject. Common Sense is his American political show. He knows he has non-American listeners, so he tries to make it accessible to everyone. If you aren't American, but have an interest in American politics it's still pretty listenable. Hardcore History is his irregular history podcast. History isn't his profession, but it's his passion and it REALLY shows with the quality of shows he puts out. His last few episodes were the Fall of the Roman Empire. The first five episodes according to iTunes are 7.6 hours long, and the sixth episode is FIVE AND A HALF hours long, a total of 13 hours

So gonna nerd it up all over here. Treknologic is a great podcast I've found about Star Trek. The crux of the show is a group of a couple of guys and a girl (I think one of their wives?) talk about one trek episode, basically being typical trek dorks about it nitpicking over pointless details and arguing about their magic space show, and do a trivia game at the end because trek nerds need to always prove who king nerd is. Basically it's one of those shows that works because the group has a good groove together, and they're not super spergy nerds about it, so it's more focused on 'wait why did the idea of the Borg repairing their ship freak Picard out so much, that's super normal right?' rather than 'BUT WARP 9 WAS ESTABLISHED AT EXACTLY 30.87 TIMES THE SPEED OF LIGHT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO OUT RUN THAT SHIP'. So yea, if you like Star Trek you may like this, the 'review an episode' format really helps it be engaging to non-hardcore fans, as opposed to just a bunch of dudes debating if Romulans have pon farr or not. Are there any other active Star Trek podcasts like this in nature?

I'm listening to a lot of new stuff because of this forum, Makes me wonder if we should have a seperate thread where people just make a quick post about the latest thing they listened to and what they thought. Kind of like "What Did You Just Finish?" in The Book Barn. I guess I'll just keep it here for now. Tobolowsky Files: Seemed a bit dry and slow at first but then I realised it's because I'm so used to listening to manic comedy. By the end it was more like a one man This American Life. I think I might listen to more of this. I always like stuff from "working" actors. People who act for a living rather and are not stars or anything. Nerdist: Gave up after ten minutes. Didn't like the host or the tone. Just not my thing. May give it another shot some time. The Bugle: Pretty funny so far. Only listened to a quarter an hour or so will definitely be listening to more.

For those of you looking for brainfood you might want to check out In Our Time the podcast of the legendary Melvyn Bragg's Radio 4 show. It's a show about the "history of ideas" with each episode being about a different subject and covering a diverse range of topics broadly catagorised as history, science, culture, religion and philosophy. It's usually Bragg and a couple of guests who are experts on the topic. Only the last couple of shows are available at any time on the main feed, but there are also archive feeds in each of the different subject areas with older shows. It can be quite dry and for me it's one of those shows I'll only really listen to when it's a topic that interests me. But when it does crossover into an area of interest it's definitely worth a listen.
