Looks like you might be stuck with the real thing. I checked the Chinese knockoff brands I've used and none of them have a HB-103 copy.

Really debated filing an insurance claim for the lens hood. Not sure it's worth the hassle and premium jump for $66. Thanks for checking!

I just bought a knockoff hood for a canon lens (because gently caress paying $90 for a piece of plastic) and it’s 90% the same. Fits a little too tight when reversing but otherwise great and only cost $10.

I'm looking at getting a handheld lightmeter. The Sekonic L-408 seems great because its a relatively inexpensive meter with spot, and incident metering. I've heard that 1 degree spot meters are usually the best but this sekonic is 5 degrees. Would this make that big of a difference for me? I'll mostly be using it for 6x12 panorama shooting with a 65mm lens.

does anyone have experience taking pictures and video of CRTs? Mostly it's just a matter of shutter speed vs refresh rate plus all the other usual nonsense.

I've been using an iPhone with various software (Moment, DSLRCam) to do this but I am thinking of getting some kind of actual DSLR for this (I have an ancient Canon Rebel somewhere but it's like 12mp and has some mechanical issues.)

I'm looking for suggestions, for, basically, the cheapest used thing that probably solves this pretty well. Actual composite analog video on a CRT maxes out at 1080 interlaced (requires a nicer CRT than I currently have, but, trying to be future proof). Also ideally I want something with USB webcam operability so that this could be used to send the same information in realtime to OBS or whatever. Additionally, CRT artifacting does weird stuff which is well beyond the usual resolution of the screen, so I do need a resolution which comfortably exceeds 1080, and also shutter speeds that can deal with/exceed a 59-60hz refresh.

What is the video signal to the CRT device, why not use an RF/composite video capture device?

I have a 1 - 5 degree zoom and I am using it on the 1 degree setting >95% of the time, so I would argue get something that can go down to 1 degree.

Curious if there are any other bags in roughly the realm/size/features. of these two that I should be looking at.

I would say the Shimoda Explore V2, Summit Creative Tenzing (I personally just got this bag, still wanting some real world use before I report back here), and Holdland backpack are among my top picks when I was looking for a bag. Ended up with the Summit Creative on local marketplace - basically new for $200. Too good of a deal to pass up; otherwise the 35L Shimoda was what I was going to get.

signal can originate as anything from 480i composite up to 1080p30 component. I've got a BlackMagic 4K capture card, capturing rendered video stream isn't the concern.

Things display fundamentally differently on a CRT than on anything else, and photos of CRTs are often interesting in ways that a simple capture isn't; some of the things you're describing as problems are part of my use case :)

My avatar is the result of a BlackMagic capture of a feedback loop. The actual rendered image on the CRT at that point had a whole ton going on that was not in the stream, and I have seen some really interesting stills and videos made from CRT captures. Everyone in that world is mostly cobbling together their own weird setups from bits of wire and sticks and poo poo.

Maybe I'll just get an EOS 60D as an upgrade to the ancient Rebel I've already got.

A friend is offering me an A7S camera body with a 50mm lens for 420 shipped.

I realize it's only 12.1mp but it's got larger sensors for better low light conditions, and 12mp is so much higher than 480i source there's plenty of room to pick up weird artifacts/CRT "sculpture" effects. HDMI video capture @ 1080p60 is also fine, that exceeds my system input specs so it's fine for feedback loops.

The low-light performance of this camera is pretty attractive for my use case.

Yeah that’s probably a pretty good deal for your use case, actually. The megapixels don’t even matter that much for video as you’re probably subsampling or supersampling anyway.

Yeah seconding this, 1deg is really important and something like the L558+ series are great. I have a 608 which has the zoom feature and shutter speed/aperture readout in the spotmeter display. The 508 is missing that which is a big minus for that version IMO.

It's been like 10-15 years since I've really been active here, and I kind of want to get back into photography. Looking for something a bit low-profile, since my main problem is just lugging a lot of gear around.

I had a Fujifilm X-T100 for a bit, but it never quite clicked with me. I'm looking for something similar I suppose, and I saw a video about the Lumix GM1, which seemed fun, as I wouldn't really need fancy features.

Anyone have any experience with it, or have any suggestions for similar small form factor cameras? Probably don't want to spend more than $500 or so.

I used this matte PLA stuff to make camera accessories with, including macro extender tubes and some lens hoods with macro flash mounts and quarter inch sockets. Optically, mechanically worked fine - easy to print, plenty strong, clean matte finish. However, word of caution - PLA gets soft at relatively low temperatures, and so some of the stuff I took with me on a shoot in California started to deform just sitting in the hot trunk of the car.

Going forward I am only going to use ABS.

Have you considered something like a higher grade 1-inch compact? If size and weight is your biggest concern, I think that’s probably the way to go. In which case the Sony RX100 series is pretty well regarded and has complete controls.

I'd prefer something with interchangeable lenses. I want to switch between a good prime for portraits/etc, and something with a bit more play when I have the space to bring something more versatile.

the thing about the jews is,
Bought a Rebel t7 but video recording stops at 12 minutes or 4gb, whichever comes first. I guess I should have read more into this because: https://ibb.co/ZmGPnnv

which means I can't record more than 12 minutes? I have a class 10 100mb/s 64gb card. troubleshooted this for days before reading that chart above more closely

Anyway, I just want to shoot stuff for longer than 12 minutes, like, say, 50? 30 even? Should I return this and if so what camera should I get. I'm really not doing anything professional

edit: wow, found recordinglimits.com and things are expensive. am I better off just getting a video recorder? I suppose it doesnt need to be a DSLR, but I want to shoot 1080p/30fps or 720p/30fps.

edit2: i feel like an idiot. how is this an issue in 2024 lol

DSLRs were never really meant for video, they just kind of leaned into it as the market demand for it increased. Mirrorless cameras generally have better video options, depending on your budget you might be able to get some flavor of Sony a6X00 which would be a step in the right direction. But really, if you only need a basic recording of something for the lowest price point, get a little tripod for your phone and download something like 'BlackMagic Camera'. In the realm of 1080p/720p you likely won't see that much of a difference.

It's not that dodgy, but it does look like the T7 non i is not supported, you should return your camera, work out what you need from video and then ask in the forums for some recommends.

Remember that the "live streaming" use case and the "recording on the card" for editing later are 2 quite different use cases.

If you can connect the camera to a computer, you can use OBS studio or likely canon’s webcam utility to circumvent the video limitations.

I have been down this road too. Your best bets are a dedicated camcorder, a GoPro, or a phone, really. Camcorders will record for as long as they have power and disk space.

Thanks for the info and suggestions everyone. I am hereby asking for recommendations for a camcorder. Just shooting inside, not worried about lighting or anything, 50 minutes or more, 720 or 1080p. It's for recording talking heads for a fun documentary, nothing crazy or important. Not professional but I'd like it to have -some- semblance of quality. I have tripods and stuff. I used a rebel t6 as a webcam and for making filmed lectures and lessons back during the pandemic. I don’t recall needing a dummy card. You would need a normal battery to power the camera, although I was using an AC adaptor that I got off Amazon for 10 bucks.

I absolutely agree with this. Get some good soft box lighting and a good microphone like the DJI Mic or Mic 2. I do some basic tutorial style or review videos for work and the stuff that I can get out of my iPhone 13 Mini with good lighting is so easy. With good light you don't even really need to do much color correction.
