All the good exotic pet specialty stores must look sketchy as gently caress, it's a rule. My best local fish place is literally a brick warehouse in the worst part of the city. I'm pretty sure it's because the profits are way lower than a general pet store due to fewer people owning exotics + exotics costing more in the first place, so they have to find the cheapest rents.

That being said, finches are birds like any other and while they don't need nearly as much space as parrots, they need enough to hop/flit around and a good amount of light and fresh air. I would at least speak to him about it.

Edit

drat, my research is telling me that they do much better in flocks larger than just a couple Birds. Alas an Aviary is out of my reach right now. Parrotlets and other smaller parakeets like linnie's they're also on my list, I just don't know how loud they get when they are going full bore. I've only ever seen quiet ones and babies. Nah, if you know the personality of both birds well and you've observed extended interactions between the two it can be fine. It certainly isn't something you'd do early on in the birds knowing each other, though.
The problem is specifically with housing a New World parrot like a conure with an Old World parrot like a cockatoo. Cockatoos and other Australasian species produce much more dust from their feathers than parrots from Central/South America, and this dust can cause severe respiratory issues in those parrots if they are in close confines with them.

I am no expert but I expect it is because of a number of factors. They inhabit different territories and as such do not interact (true for some, but not all), and given the option they would rather mate within their own species.

Corella x Galah hybrids are seen sometimes n the wild though.

As are Corella x Sulphur-Crested.

Mixed-species cockatoo flocks are common so it is not that surprising to have hybrids. They do seem to vary more in phenotype compared to macaw hybrids, with individuals having more traits of one parent or the other. Most of them are likely not fertile, since corellas, galahs, and other cockatoos are more distantly related to each other than the macaw species.

Rosella hybrids are super common in the wild though it can be hard to differentiate them from color mutations.
Eastern x Crimson Rosellas are stunning.

As are Eastern Rosella x Australian Ringnecks

Lorikeet hybrids are common to the point of displacing the pure species in some areas.

Shaving cream is poisonous to birds. Yours contains triethanolamine, methylchloroisothiazolinone, and methylsisothiazolinone which are definitely toxic orally. Also the volatile oils found in many perfumes can cause organ damage if ingested. A tiny amount may not harm him, but I would not give him any on purpose.

Do dusty birds make not dusty birds sick?

Rule of thumb is not to house Old World parrots with New World parrots because many Old World parrot species have "powder down" feathers whose keratin sheaths break down into finer dust than the feathers of New World birds. Cockatoos/tiels and African Grays being the worst offenders in this regard.

I wonder why there's so little interest in owning pigeons in the USA, and why parrots are considered the default "pet bird". Pigeons will never be the flashiest or cleverest, but they come in beautiful varieties and they've been bred to accept humans for thousands of years. Is it bad PR from the "flying rats" thing?

:catstare:

Pigeons have traditionally been used either as food animals, as messengers (postal or military), racing or for show. It was/is rare to have a purely "pet" pigeon.

Parrots are popular because they talk, simple as that. It's a good gimmick to have. Also why the domestic canary has fallen out of favor among pet owners.

Rule of thumb is not to cage Old World parrots with New World parrots due to the former producing much more dust. Budgies/parakeets aren't nearly as dusty as cockatiels but I wouldn't risk it.
