It's annual bonus and tax time and I'm itching to replace my ten year old DLP that has a blown (sole) hdmi port and is generally just getting time to be replaced. I'm just starting my research and wanted to find out if there are any tvs that have plex built into them and if it is any good. Thanks!

Is there a website that lists out all of the models by manufacturer and by year? When I come across a deal I'd like to see where it sits in regard to the product line as well as when it was released. You see these deals and oftentimes it's a three year old set. I'm in the market for a 60"+ for my basement and want to be able to properly do research.

I didn't with my LG 60PA6500 I bought last year and it's fine but I did make sure not to watch anything not full screen. I just picked up the LG 60PN6500 for my basement and don't have as much control over what's played so I'm doing it. I am very very happy with this set. Also picked up a Denon receiver and it completely unlocked my Bose 701s and VCS 10. I thought they were lack luster before. Running wires for my rears tomorrow! I used to use a 650 but it was very unstable and eventually just died with no way to resurrect. I went through two of them before just giving up. Has the quality of the remotes improved over the years? I am really looking for something good to consolidate my TV, Receiver, Cable Box, and maybe Xbox/HTPC remotes. I don't want to use my smartphone full time but the option is nice. I would prefer not to spend an arm and a leg either and this one dips under $100 from time to time on sale.

You can assign a custom short press and long press function to nearly every button on the simple remote and those can be commands or macros.

So, you can get away with using the simple remote for the vast majority of the things you do with it and then break out the mobile app for any edge cases.

Great, appreciate the vote of confidence. I assume that means you haven't experience any instability issues? I saw a refurbished for $80. Should I consider that or is Logitech refurbs dodgy?

I will say I've encountered some missed commands in various activities I've built, especially if I haven't used the remote in a while or everything is off but that's likely my fault or my old tv not accepting commands without me programming a delay. It feels like magic having the puck in my tv stand yet it working with all devices and the remote it comes with is slick and compact.

Ah, I understand. You have it controlling your Mac Mini which is running Plex. Just wanted to make sure I didn't overlook a tightly integrated Plex solution as I am in the process of retiring my HTPCs. I'm up to two Chromecasts and that new Roku stick is on its way. Having Plex running on my iMac (shares mounted from my NAS) has proven to be a very very successful way to play local media with minimal fuss.

I ordered the Logitech for $110 on Amazon, can't wait. Think it'll be a great solution but am concerned over where to put the blaster given that none of my stuff is in the media cabinet. Here is a shot of my set up, yes I have some cleaning up to do. If I have a plug in my drop ceiling (improbable, but possible) I'm thinking of setting it up up there and having clear view of everything, otherwise I can't think of a good out of the way place that my small children won't gently caress with it.

Hey goons, I'm looking to replace my main family room TV (2012ish 60" LG Plasma) that doesn't get direct sunlight but does get light into the room. Based on its size I want to go bigger and think I can go at least as much as 80".

I've had a really good year and willing to spend more than I normally would, but not terribly interested in diving deep into research at this time. If I'm looking to buy the Cadillac right now, what should I be getting given the limited context I've given so far? My friend tells me the 77" LG OLED is the slam dunk, but was quiet on a specific model and know that can be a big difference.

I'll be building a new home theater around it, so no need to mention that stuff. Usage is primarily an AppleTV, a Switch, and occasionally casting my Oculus via a chrome cast.

I'm sure you need a budget, but let's start with $4k at the highest end? The way too expensive next gen that has no content for it yet is not something I'm interested in.

Appreciate any input that will shorten my search and to keep my eyes open for around Black Friday. Model numbers are helpful when relevant! Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply! I actually need to do some introspection to find out which of those things I care about. But you've given me very direct feedback once I sort it out. I'd hope burn in isn't a problem as we won't be leaving it on unless watching it. Although my basement plasma got DENON burned in when a kid left it on so 🤷‍♂️.

I've been out of the game so long I don't even know much about HDR other than that my tvs don't have it.

Are there any variations of the model numbers you provided or if I stick to those I should be safely getting the correct set?

Thanks!

Ah excellent practical information. Any LED models to recommend that I can peruse? Coming from a likely dim plasma from ten years ago everything is likely to wow me. That being said, at least half of my watching is in the daytime on weekends so if more brightness makes that poo poo pop more in those conditions than that's compelling. Thanks for that feedback! Going to the store this weekend to get my eyes on the sets to get a feel. Basically debating between the qn90a or the c1. Need to measure to see if the 85" will fit, that may push the decision one way or the other.

Went to BB today to take a look at the sets. They all look amazing and I am having a hard time telling the difference between the Samsung QN90a and the LG C1, especially taking into consideration subpar setup and lighting in store. They had a 55ish QN90A in the darker theater area and it looked outstanding, not sure if that scales up to into the 70s or 80s.

If I had a gun put to my head right now I’d go with the 75” QN90A. Need to measure to see if the 85ish is overkill or not.

I liked the deal at Costco for the C1 that included the extra warranty and because I love Costco (PBUC), but that’s not enough for me to tip the balance. Didn’t see the 85” on Costcos website, unless they stock them in warehouse but not list on their website.

Speaking of sound, with modern TVs is it preferable to run all inputs into the TV and then the TV output to any soundbar/receiver? For ages I've been running everything into the receiver and letting that perform all the switching and then one output into the TV. Has the model flipped with recent technology?

Need to still find a place to give it a listen, but the Sonos Arc is top of my list for my audio solution to my QN90A that's arriving today and need to start sorting out the logistics here.

It depends on what you have for sound though, and if you have invested anything substantial into your screen you owe it to yourself to do it for the audio as well. In which case you oughta have a receiver that can take everything and just send the video to the TV.

Thanks, and that makes sense. For my room, we don't need a full home theater experience that's tightly optimized. It's a family room that'll be primarily watching sports and often shows at night. Want a real full sound and clear vocals though. My many year old Sony soundbar is muddy on the vocals and pissing me off to no end.

Is the Sonos Arc with surround an outright pass from the goon hive mind with that taken into account? 95% of the usage is through an AppleTV. Not sure if it's the kind of set up that will hamstring me in 5 years either.

When I do my basement theater, it'll be the place where we watched Dune 24/7 with the best audio/video experience.

Have they fixed these issues and this is the slam dunk no brainer now?

I know that there are certain settings that I should be flipping around to get the best (reasonably speaking) picture than the system defaults.
