The iPads go on sale pretty frequently from all retailers. I would not recommend buying one from Apple unless it’s within a few weeks of release.

Best Buy has them for $100 off every few weeks.

Most recent Apple Pencil basically stays permanently affixed to my 12.9” Pro in its intended spot without any problems FWIW.

I use it maybe 30% of the time I’m using the tanker (trying to use the pencil more) but it’s not really a hassle if it comes off in my backpack because I can just reattach it.

Definitely a substantial upgrade over the first version and both add basically the only stylus I’ve ever felt are worth using.

If it’s a regular input device, you’ll be in a really good place. If you’re storing it in a drawer for weeks at a time, why did you buy it in the first place?

The case I’ve got on my iPad has a slot for magnetic charging, but it’s also got a stretchy fabric slot for it on the back that holds it much more securely. I keep the pencil on the magnetic slot the vast majority of the time, but if I’m worried about it getting jostled around it’s nice to have the more secure option.

Apple does allow payment plans, though, yes? I have the money for it but it's still a significant upfront cost.

You have to do it through an Apple Card, but yes.

With an Apple Card, yeah. I have a Best Buy card that does 5% back or 0% financing above certain dollar amounts so I get the same benefits there as well.

Yeah, facebook the trillion dollar company can't figure out how to make an ipad app apparently

(they can, they just don't want to because ipads will show how low-quality IG's images/videos are. Though I don't think that's true anymore.)

ipads already make instagram look like rear end so there's no reason for them to put effort into an ipad specific app that will also look like rear end. They've already accomplished assitude!

Does the announcement of a new iPad usually entail a price drop for the previous gen?

I'm likely gonna just wait until the event to see what the best purchase for me is, but at the same time sites mostly just seem to predict a more expensive Oled model that I'd probably pass on. But if it means I can save a few hundred on a current model it's definitely worth waiting imo. Also I'm planning on getting it from Costco so I guess if I totally screw myself I could just return it. Just want to get this project started Asap, so waiting two weeks kind of sucks but it does seem like a very dumb moment to buy an iPad

The macrumors site has done me pretty good over the years on that front: https://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ Not that it helps you on the timing front, but at least you can get an idea if its in a state of yes buy now, or no wait a few weeks.

I think other retailers generally start to drop prices on last years iDevices they have a glut of, but I believe generally apple entirely delists them from sale. You'd probably be able to find them in the refrub area but won't have your pick of options. So for sure someone will have it on sale, how much and is it the model you want, will be an entirely different question.

the thing is, specifically absolutely for you, it's worth waiting. you want a large 11" or so ipad for drawing, which has traditionally meant the top end pro, which is laptop levels of expensive. one of the rumoured new models that's going to be introduced is a similarly sized, drawing-capable ipad AIR, which should (would, but Apple can always do an Apple) be cheaper than even the last gen pros getting discounted. unless you see a ipad pro on apple refurb or like on woot or something, WITH warranty, then don't jump until after the event.

also, a reminder that if you buy an apple pencil and/or apple keyboard (NOT a third party kind of either, even if it's sold through apple) at the same time as you buy your ipad, it's covered under applecare.

There is always a newer better product on the horizon. It is unavoidable. Only worry about it if the announcement of it is a month or maybe two away.

Cool yeah I think I can wait. I'm definitely intrigued by a 12.9 inch iPad Air more than anything. I really don't know if I need a pro. It's not like this project is time sensitive I'm just getting antsy.

It's funny, I've been ignoring iPad for so many years I didn't realize how viable they are as a straight up laptop replacement now. I was loving around with a magic keyboard at the store and goddamn they are pricey, but I could get the full daily driver experience with an iPad I think and just ditch my old macbook air. Really love Apples touchpads and didn't want to give that up but I was surprised how close the experience feels to mac os with one of those hooked up. the touchpad feels great even if it's a little smaller than I like. Really think this should be ideal both functionally and financially than a laptop upgrade. That keyboard is a game changer.

I mean, it depends on why you use a laptop. I use my macbook air for shitposting and watching videos. I just like the form factor of having a keyboard and a clamshell so I can lie in bed and goof around on the net. other than that I want to use it to draw. Really seems like an iPad/magic keyboard would be a better fit for me.*

*I also have a gaming laptop so it's not like I dont have the option. It just weighs like 8lbs and has a 17 inch screen so it's not exactly great for using around the house. It never leaves my desk unless I drag it with me on a trip (I no longer do this thanks to steam deck though)

I suppose so. The main reason why I am dying on this hill is just how clumsy and not seemless switching between programs is. Doing more than one thing at once is a serious chore. The splitscreen mode is kinda alright I guess, but still not very ideal for much of anything.

I would agree with that. I tried an ipad as a laptop replacement, they are amazing machines for media consumption and ducking around, but the moment you try to do something a bit more involved you really notice the limits of the software.

I currently own an M1 12.9 pro and my upgrade readiness is 100% about the OLED and its specific properties.

For example you could, as far as I understand it, take the ultra thin OLED tech that's been floating around at LG et al, and combine that into a dual layer OLED. That would be absolutely loving incredible. Tiny bezels, ultra thin, super bright, and even theoretically reduced burn in risk vs a single layer OLED.

The potential is off the charts, the only question is if they were able to actually implement that tech, get it manufactured efficiently, and then on top of all that ensure that the price isn't too insane.

One good sign is the 12.9 inch panel being transitioned into the Air line. If they're ok with that kind of improvement on the lower sku, imo that indicates a high level of confidence in the new 12.9 display being extremely good.

Got a 1st gen of the 11 inch iPad Pro. The battery is starting to get pretty bad. Is it worth paying to have it replaced or am I going to be stuck with an out of support device in not too long anyway?

Yeah if you don't need the additional power (and if you're not gaming or using it for art/music production, you don't), just replace the battery and run it into the ground or give it toa relative/kid

Ok so currently the Apple website will give me $510 for my basically mint M1 ipad Pro.

Will this drop when the new ipads come out? Or, I guess I should ask, is there anything to be aware of when you know you're going to do a trade in for a new ipad?

Or is it always better to sell on like FB marketplace or Offer Up? My limited experience with FB marketplace apple products is that it's weird and full of scammers, but maybe as a seller it's fine...

The trade in value will definitely drop once the models are announced.

You can trade it in now if you can live a few weeks without an iPad or wait and lose a few bucks.

Selling another method will get you more but then you do have to worry about scammers and other issues.

I think even if the new iPads are good enough to entice me, I’d still get use of the old iPad Pro as a reading device at work or whatever. So I guess I will pull the trigger on a new battery

Thanks both

I’m actually selling some poo poo on FB marketplace atm to take the sting off the iPad I’m planning on buying next week and yeah there’s scammers for sure, but they are pretty obvious if you are internet savvy at all. Just don’t ever deal with anyone who wants to do business over Facebook, like do not give out your Venmo online. that’s the current scam.

Otherwise it’s actually pretty good. Much better than when I’ve used Craigslist. Been getting rid of stuff quickly without getting haggled too hard.

sounds good! Thanks yall.

Super excited. If Apple really does deliver on the OLED tech, this poo poo is going to be insane.

I wonder if the M4 will really launch with it as suspected. If it does, I wonder if they'll do the unthinkable and bring MacOS to ipad? I know that sounds idiotic, but introducing the M4 first in an iPad, classically the device least in need of performance upgrades, they have something brewing if this all turns out to be real.

The suspicion is that it's some AI angle, but how would an iPad even use an AI core?

So if the new iPad pros end up having oled screens, and that probably means a price bump, I wonder if there will likely be an LCD pro that is cheaper or will the Air 12.9 inch just replace that niche? or will they somehow by the grace of god remain the same price with an oled?
