Self-Burning doesn't seem to self-burn much. It just makes you nearly invincible. I guess it's nice when the bullshit is on the player's side though.

It's funny because the gimmick and the idea seem fun, but the sheer inability of the mod author to actually make it enjoyable is what ruins it. Making the enemies shoot bullets at you when destroyed is a really dumb idea for a game that isn't primarily a shmup in the first place, overloading the hardware with way too many sprites is sloppy, and the biggest sin it commits is that you just end up using proto shield instead of cycling through your weapons and having fun with using them in a unique gimmick where their powers are perhaps interesting in how they can damage the enemies or enemy spawners in a unique manner. Slow the travel speed down a bit, remove the bullets being shot at the player on enemy death, provide more setups for different weapons, and suddenly it's a fun section instead of a slog.

That whole section looked miserable. Whoops, this was already said in the other thread, but I'll keep it for posterity. So fun thing the proto shield works like the cursed shield from ff6 and stops being cursed after 256-ish shots, it turns gold and is renamed to hero shield. I don't know if it does anything, but it's a cute little easter egg. If you can get to the end with rank AAA (good luck) it gives you 999 bolts. Oh right, before I forget again- what the heck IS up with that fish in the previous Wily level? PJ spent a while trying everything he could think of on it, and nothing had any visible effect. But it and several other 'friends' show up in the final area like some sort of 'did you find the secrets' check. EDIT: Oh god, Phantoon mode... To the end, this game was technologically impressive but also an example of a developer that clearly does not know when to stop. It kept that going to the very end. The gameplay felt like it was built around that - everything is explosive, a million enemies appear to the point the console cannot keep up, Touhou-like bullet hell patterns...but hey, you're essentially invincible, so you can just win without ever being in danger. It's just bad all around, but it is undeniably impressive.
