It gets better, dimethyl mercury is the internal reference for 199Hg NMR. Only a madman would think that would be a good choice.In fact several of the recommended NMR standards are terrible.

19F uses CFCl3, which kills the ozone and as I can attest is almost impossible to work with.
TMS isn't that good for you either but 99% of the solvent NMR is done with has it.
Stripnyme is used as an instrument calibration standard.

And solvents can be bad but only if you pretty stupid.
D2O is amusing since it makes ice cubes that sink in normal water, but ingestion would be fatal.
