I'm looking at the video, is this supposed to be real? It seems...unlikely.

What I will say I haven't seen discussed...doesn't Texas have a law against divestment from Israel? https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=85R&Bill=HB89
This bill is specific to companies with government contracts, but I'd be surprised if UT-Austin wasn't prohibited. If it does apply, then divestment is not legal possible for UT-Austin. (Wasn't going to happen anyway, but moreso if it is state law.)

This whole thing is two different issues going on at once - the relationship between students and progressive protests with the local/state government and their police apparatuses AND then Gaza. I wouldn't base their right to protest on divestment being achievable here, but I don't think even in the best case scenario we'd ever see a compromise with the students on their protest issue. Brown University's protest got some compromise, so that's why we might believe the protesters could get their demands met in certain places.

Yes it would require a change in state law. But "the thing we are demanding is neither legal, practical, or possible" has never stopped a teenage activist. I think the kids are just outraged about Israel and want to protest it but there's only so much you can demand of a state university.

So what happens in a week when finals start, this stuff just spontaneously stops?

Yeah, I don't blame them for protesting and even if it's not legal to divest, UT-Austin could handle this a trillion times better. It also does make sense to pick as the goal because that's been the goal of protests at private universities in other states this past month, it's just that our state university is likely much more constrained.

And yeah, I assume at least the college protests will end within the next few weeks. We'll see what happens during their summer breaks off campus.

Yeah, protesting on the quad is part of what college is for, it just pisses me off that Abbott is using this as an excuse to crack heads and the college admin is blithely going along with it. I don't even know what the protestors were supposed to have been doing that is illegal.

Texas does this poo poo a lot, they also don't allow investment banks that have restrictions on guns or who are mean to oil companies to bid on TX contracts

Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker considering a run for Harris County judge in 2026

Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker has been talking to friends and supporters in recent months about making another run for elected office.

...

The former mayor said she has not finalized any plans about her future. She is leaving her job at the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund in December and said she will assess her options after departing the political action committee, which is dedicated to supporting LGBTQ candidates for elected office nationwide.

...

It is unclear whether Parker would challenge Hidalgo in a primary or if the former mayor is exploring a run in case Hidalgo decides not to seek a third term. There has been speculation that Hidalgo may run for statewide office or eye a federal appointment if President Joe Biden wins in November, instead of seeking reelection.

One of the two sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said Parker is likely to run even if Hidalgo does seek reelection, suggesting the former mayor is interested in taking on the incumbent Democrat.

Hidalgo was good, not perfect. If you count Ogg as a Republican (you should) then basically yeah.

That's because the state did a forced hostile takeover of the district and gave it to someone so bad that even Dallas ran him out of town.
