Numemon X is brilliant, and Impmon X is a perfect expression of the X Antibody aesthetic. These redesigns for new and old Digimon, following after a style that is itself 16 years old, are a great way to lean into the nostalgia and history of the franchise beyond just pumping out Adventure merch. I hope they stick with it for a third wave.

I would have assumed Shoutmon was Vaccine because he's a lead Digimon, but if they didn't want it to be Free attribute, there's logic in the Digimon whose defining feature is combining with a wide variety of other Digimon being the more neutral Data attribute rather than Vaccine or Virus.

Similarly, there's a lot of Digimon I would have assumed would be Ultimate that are Perfect, but this does work out for future use of Xros Wars Digimon because it's not a situation where all the noteworthy Digimon are Ultimates and can't be used in video games until the end.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen anything about what stores you can buy the English release from come the end of January.

I can pop into the local Walmart or Meijer and get Pokemon/Yu-gi-oh/Magic or whatever, but I'm not sure if they'll have Digimon. Surely the cards won't be limited to those specialty shops from the pre-sale right?

I don't know much about these things, especially in terms of US retail, but aren't most TCGs smaller than those 3 only stocked in specialist game shops anyway? When the Digimon Card Game's on general release it'll be possible to get it online, at leaat, so it'll be more accessible than in the pre-sale.

The Memorial Story Project Digimon are all designed for people who spent 300k yen to get an original design and plush for a partner Digimon of their own, so they won't be making evolutions for them and it seems pretty unlikely they'll be used for anything in the future since all the other new Digimon that have been revealed recently got profiles on the official site pretty much immediately and none of these have.

In that context, "it's another one of those popular protagonist-y dragon-lizard Digimon, but with this gimmick" feels like a pretty solid premise for getting your own officially-designed Digimon.

I haven't read any of the upcoming episode titles or summaries, but with the big shift in writing quality and active use of more of the cast lately, plus the last few episodes feeling like an obvious cycle of post-Ultimate/Perfect character focus episodes, it feels to me like the pandemic must have had a massive impact on production for this show. War Greymon probably had to show up when he did for merchandising's sake, since he's all over the card game and everything else.

Since the very start of Digimon, there's been Digimon that are small and cute but also high-level, like Mamemon. Gatomon being a Champion as her base form is a clever way of getting around the problem where if she was a Rookie, either her Champion form would never do anything or she'd feel unimpressive for being the cool new Digimon but not having an Ultimate yet - Patamon was able to get away with it, but it wouldn't have worked as well with a new character.

All this is setting aside opinions on 02, which is a mess but it's a mess I prefer to Adventure. It's full of interesting ideas, and I'm the type to love it for trying so much instead of being frustrated with so many of the pieces not really coming together.

As much as I would like to see Digimon English names get tidied up, I do have a certain appreciation for the card game committing to decisive consistency with what came before it, even if what came before it is KendoGarurumon and Bebydomon. There's already too many Digimon with 2+ English names, and consistency with video games etc. feels valuable for new people getting into Digimon.

I don't feel like Adventure:'s problems are rooted in it using the Adventure characters. There's nothing really about the plot that's retreading Adventure specifically rather than being just a new "trapped in the Digital World"-type Digimon show, and non-partner Digimon that are in both shows are pretty different. It does suffer for having such a large cast - fewer kids would mean the non-lead focus would have been better spread out - but IMO its critical flaw is its pacing, and the same people at the same time presumably would have had that same issue no matter how fresh the show they're making was.

I feel like this episode could have made a solid first half of an episode if they cut out most of the fighting, the scene with Mimi and Hikari worked well and the imagery of the big moments was strong.

The colours make sense for the Frontier kids if they started from the Ten Warriors and worked their way back; Black is the obvious colour for the Blitzmon line but Green suits Ancient Beatmon better as the ancestor of the Insect Digimon, for example. Since the big niche for the first hybrids was Ancient Greymon/Garurumon support, it makes sense they'd plan for that in the rest.

In itself, sitting back and letting the guy who wrote Tamers do whatever he wants for a script reading at an event for the people who are still passionate about that show 20 years later is a decision that makes sense. Obviously, the results aren't good, but it feels like a context where you'd be more hands-off because it's not like you need to market or merchandise whatever Konaka writes.

Adventure: has its moments, there's been enough good episodes overall that I've felt like watching week-to-week has been worth it, but I wouldn't recommend marathoning it. It could work as a show to have on while you're doing something else where you can pay attention to Digimon when good things are happening and just be vaguely aware of dull stuff like the boats still slowly crashing, maybe.

1st Stage Midboss

I feel like the pandemic and hiatus must have really shaken the Adventure: staff. The way the show has worked throughout since then - minimal supporting characters, no focus on villains with dialogue, constantly splitting up the cast and avoiding long-term dynamics between characters - makes a lot more sense from the point of view of making the production as resilient as possible when you have 16 main character VAs. Doesn't make the show any better, but it feels like a plausible possibility of how it became what it is. There's been enough solid episodes to feel like they could have made a better show, but as is Adventure: really feels like less than the sum of its parts.

I saw it pointed out on Twitter yesterday that we only knew Crunchyroll were streaming Adventure: a day before it aired; with that in mind, the current silence doesn't mean much. They've had the last two years of Precure as well as a long history of Digimon, it seems unlikely that Toei would change course with Ghost Game.

OmniShoutmon's one of those names where it's not good but it is the best way they could handle it, given OmegaShoutmon's explicit ties to Omegamon and Omnimon being too iconic to change without committing to a franchise-wide rebranding to the original names. I would never call it that myself outside of playing and discussing the card game, but I'd say it was the right naming decision.

Adventure: definitely had its moments, and it's not surprising that they'd want to dub it since a 67-episode show in a proven franchise is probably an easy sell. Now it's over, it feels like a show very suited to running in repeats forever on TV - you could change the channel to whoever's airing it, catch an random episode or two, and enjoy them as much as if you'd seen every episode.

This week's Ghost Game, on the other hand, was possibly my favourite episode of the show so far. The atmosphere of threat and dread it built up was brilliant, and the story was interesting too.

Ghost Game and Adventure: have different staff behind them, and Healin' Good Precure proved that Toei merch-selling shows could come out of the same hiatus as Adventure: without being wrecked by it. Combined with Ghost Game being at a convenient point for this to happen, where things are very definitely escalating but there's not a big overarching plot revealed in a way the protagonists are interacting with yet, it should be able to take a few weeks downtime more gracefully.

02 might not have a ton of strong plotting, but its characters, ideas, and general vibes had me come away preferring it to Adventure when I watched them both subbed for the first time a couple of years back. It's messy, but it feels ambitious in all the right ways as a second series and sequel.

The only real problem Hybrids had before was the difficulty of fitting them in alongside conventional levels, but since the Digimon X v-pet they seem to have settled on the approach that they do whatever's best suited to fit them into the format. The Beasts being Perfect-tier in the DiM cards makes sense from the perspective of including a mixture of Hybrid and regular Digimon at each level, the Humans being Child-tier in the recent other v-pets lets them fit the whole Flame/Light lines in directly, and both being Lv.4 in the card game fits best from a gameplay point of view. That leaves plenty of space to make it easier to fit them into video games and the like, and Pegasmon in Adventure: sets a prominent precedent for just ignoring when a Digimon's level is awkward for lore.

As much as Agumon doesn't excite me, I've spent years wanting Digimon games where you have A Digimon Partner instead of collecting monsters, like in every piece of fiction (except sorta Xros Wars), and this seems like it does both, which is a decent approach. I'd much rather be able to choose who it is, but since Survive also gives you a set protagonist instead of a choice like Next Order and Cyber Sleuth it does sell it more as "this is the protagonist, his partner is Agumon" rather than "your partner is Agumon, deal with it."

The closest I can get to the replacement of Sistermon Noir making sense to me is if they did it with any future Digimon World titles in mind. Even though it's not on-screen in the newer games I could see "in this game based on a kids' cartoon you can make a nun poop!" being a hypothetical complaint if anyone went out of their way to notice and then enough people bothered to care. It still doesn't feel like a change worth making, especially with the chaos it's caused for the card game, but the actual canon Sistermon Ciel is probably my favourite Sistermon so we did get something out of it at least.

Espimon looks so weird, it's great. I was absolutely expecting something cooler for the new Digimon that's a big enough deal to get its own Dim, but if it is going to be in Ghost Game, being at the point where one of the cast already has their Perfect and the others will probably show up soon, it's easy to get away with (and in tone with Ghost Game) to make new major Child-level Digimon such a weird little guy.

I liked the episode a lot. The whole angle where Ruli, who's spent the entire show investigating supernatural goings-on and has built a big social media presence on it, spends the episode rejecting superstition and belief because it's the wrong kind of belief, is interesting, especially in context of 35 episodes where every supernatural thing turned about to be a Digimon.
Lamortmon wasn't how I expected, but he works really well. He's not a berserker like I expected - he's a big scary brutal monster, but he's a big scary brutal monster version of Angoramon with Angoramon's goals and priorities, just more violent about it. It's a personality shift, but in the same way that Thetismon is more refined than Jellymon and Canoweissmon is more mature than Gammamon.

Regular Wizarmon, I absolutely agree, but I think Wizarmon X gets the right amount of edge and attitude to work for Impmon, and especially for Impmon X since they both have black-and-red X eyepatches (perhaps Impmon X's chuunibyou inspired it to copy Wizarmon X). It's definitely one of those cases where a line works better in X context than the original, and I like those because it lets the X Antibody Digimon feel like their X evolution puts them onto a different path than without it.

It seems to indicate that every Gammamon Adult has a line of its own. Ghilledhumon was added to the DRB already, so I imagine they have no real intention of having this affect the anime, but it's neat nonetheless. It did come out in the Gammamon BE Memory and it somewhat fits as WezenGammamon's evolution (it has three horns, is mostly green, and uses a gun) so I get it, but I didn't expect it.

Notably, WezenGammamon is the only thing that can evolve into Ghilliedumon on the BE, so it has stronger ties there. None of the other Adults have exclusive access to Bombermon, Fumamon, or Zanmetsumon, so if they do put one into Blue for the card game it'll probably be more for mechanical reasons - as a Fairy outfitted for the wild, Ghilliedumon is thematically very Green even outside the Gammamon context.

Based on the precedent of the D-Reaper cards, they're almost certainly new art that looks like screencaps rather than actual screencaps. I'm not sure why this is the artstyle they've gone with, maybe hands are tied in some way, but it's an intentional artistic choice rather than just laziness.
